Over the holiday my grandma suggested playing a radio in my baby's room while she sleeps. Has anyone done this before and if so was it successful?

What can I do next?

My first daughter was born in 2000. We started playing classical lullabies for her at 3m. She started sleeping thrught the night. We are now expecting are 4th child in Jan and for all have played the music. They are all great sleepers and go down very easy.

YUP! And FYI, people think it should be very quiet, but it's actually better loud! Also, if baby is having trouble sleeping in the quiet night, a fan turned on med or high works well. They also like "white noise machines" and the sound of water (CD of ocean or rain).
Good Luck:)

Every child is different and somethings work for some but not for others. Some of my babies needed a radio softly playing classical music to help them sleep and others it just kept awake. I suggest giving it a try and if it works then keep up with it and if it don't work then stop doing it. Children don't come with owners manuals unfortunately and you'll learn that alot of child rearing is trial and error. No parenting class will work 100% of the time for every child...that's why there's so many different classes and books, but what they do offer is new and fresh ideas when nothing else has worked. Always follow your heart and try to remain patient when learning what works for your child.

I have used this technique on all three of my kids and it worked like a charm. I actually use a cd of soft church music. My kids have all slept through the night at an early age and I attribute it partly to the music. I have also found it makes them much deeper sleepers. You don't have to constantly quiet people when the baby is sleeping because they can sleep through everything. I would highly recommend it!

I can't remember when I started, but my boys are now 5 and 3 and share a room. I have a radio/CD/cassete player on their bookshelf for night time and mornings. They like to pick what to listen to to go to sleep (diffrent childrens tapes and CD's appropriate for bedtime) and in the morning, I usually pick an upbeat tape or CD to play to get them moving and wake up to. Sometimes if one wakes up in the middle of the night, they will come into me and ask me to turn the music back on. I try to keep the volumn low and keep the type of music soothing for sleep. We live in an old home and the soft music covers the creaks and squeaks from the wind blowing or sounds from the cat and dog moving in the hallway.
God bless. J. <><

I don't see a problem with it but most likely it will be something your baby ends up needing to go to sleep so if you don't mind always making sure you have a radio with you at bedtime then I wouldn't see a problem. They do have sound machines out there that do waves, rain, streams, etc that turn themselves off in 60 minutes. That might be nice for you. My daughter has one of those aquarium toys that has a soft light and plays music for about 10 minutes then turns off. She is now 3 and turns it on herself (easy big button on the front) before bed. Also I hear it at night sometimes if something wakes her up like a storm or when my newest baby cries. It's kind of nice that she can soothe herself back to sleep with just pushing a button. I think fisher price makes them.

Is your grandmother suggesting this to help your child get accustomed to noise so as to not wake up when company is over? I have a CD player in my kids room and I play it everynight when they go to sleep. They listen to a nature CD or lullaby. It may be nice to play some soft Christmas music. My kids do love music. Is this why who knows. They rarely wake up from voices either. Maybe grandma has some good ideas.

ABSOLUTELY a must! I reccommend that you not play the radio, but play soothing CDs. It is wonderful for the babies night time (or naptime) routine. A few CDs that were our favorites are BRAHAMS LULLABYES, PARENTS LULLABYES, YANNI and ENYA...CDs, I still listen to! I didn't play it through the whole night, only for an hour or through the nap....whatever works for your family.

I would either play relaxing music or use a sound machine. My 6 mo. old has had a sound machine in her room for two months and she loves it. Whenever we turn it on she associates it with sleep and it relaxes her to where she's down in no time! I think it's a great idea, but I wouldn't let the radio just play anything...

I would definately say using a radio would be a calming and soothing experience to get baby to sleep, and also hearing the music gives a secured feeling while sleeping.
I used a dvd player and played soft soothing lullaby songs at the beginning of my then infant son's naptime, and then continued playing (setting it to instant replay) the music while he sleeped. This combined with a dim lit room, I believed helped him rest securely.
I hope this helped, and Congratulations to your baby girl!!

L. honey, i'm a grandma so i've been around for awhile. of course i still go with the old fashion ways but i'm hereto tell you it works. But there are a few tricks to it. The music should be soft but not at a whisper and today experts say that classical music is the best for little one to sleep by because it creates intelligence. i don't know about the last part but i didn't raise any dummies! HA! try it, i bet it will work.
