Ok, so I have a 4 month old son and he seems to be teething. One minute he is fine and the next he is miserable. He has his 4 month check up coming up and the doctor is going to confirm, but does anyone have advise on how to make him feel better. Tylenol isn't helping and really can't hold to much in his mouth yet, so I feel bad. He sits there crying, biting his fingers and drooling. I know this lasts a while and it I think it will get easier once he holds things easier but for now I need somthing to comfort him.
Thanks for the advice everyone. My son is now 5 1/2 months old and finally cut his first tooth. The Orajel swabs worked wonders and so has frozen teethers.

My son also started teething at around that age. Tylenol did nothing for him, and the doctor told me he wasn't teething even though he was in pain, drooling non-stop, and chewing on everything he could grab. I got some baby orajel as a few others suggested, and what do you know. All better. :) Later that week his two bottom front teeth popped out....yeah...not teething. :) Good luck!!!

Hi A.-
You could try freezing a wet washcloth and let him chomp on that. They also sell teethers which have water or gel filled parts which can be put in the freezer. The cold should help ease some of the discomfort. You can also find Hyland's teething tablets, which are a homeopathic remedy, at the local drugstore (CVS, Brooks, etc.). I never used them, but I have heard they work wonders. Once he is a bit older he can have teething biscuits ie: zwieback & they have other types of teething biscuits in the baby aisle at you supermarket. My son loved those. Good luck!

I have a 4 month old son too and he is going through the same thing right now. The only thing I have tried is letting him chew on his pacifier (which is hard because I end up having to hold it). The other teething toys are too big for his mouth. I am going to try freezing the wet washcloth. I am hoping to avoid medicine until the teeth start appearing.

Well, my daughter at four months teethed for a solid two weeks and got all her front teeth in in that two week span. So I know what you are going through. Anbasol and origel worked for a little while. Also just rubbing your finger (making sure your hands are really clean) works real well cause he will chew on your fingers and that helps cause the gums are so sore so he can't chew on something hard but you fingers are just soft enough. Also cold stuff like frozen waffles or stick a carrot in the freezer, just don't let him break off any of it into his mouth.
Well I hope that helps

Try Hyland's Teething Tablets. They are all-natural & work wonders. You should be able to find them at any large pharmacy.

Hylands Teething Tablets work wonders. They're completely homeopathic so they're safer. Just put three tablets in your sons mouth. They will dissolve almost instantly. They also take effect right away.
Good Luck!

Hi A.! I also have a now 5 month old daughter who has been going thru the same thing. It is so heartbreaking to see them like that! I tried tylonol too on my docs recommendation and have gotten mediocre results. My sister picked up some homepathic teething medicine, which I never would have bought, and it really works! It is much better than the tylonol, the results are immidiately noticable (within 15 minutes). I have tried two that I like: Gentle Naturals Homeopathic Teething LIquid and Camilia Single Dose Teething Relief. You could probably find these at most grocery stores in the "natural" section. Now even tho these work well they still don't releive all the problems when its at its worst. Sometimes I use them in conjunction with tylonol to reduce her fever (which the tylonol IS good for) I have also tried putting her binkies in the fridge. Good luck! I know this is tough for you and your son. Hang in there...it will pass!

My husband and I are big fans of orajel. There is the regular goo that you can put on their gums, but there are also these teething swabs. They look like q-tips and you break off one end and the liquid drains into the other end. It seemed to be more effective, I think because of the cotton rubbing the orajel in. Also, pacifiers seemed to help. My daughter would not take a pacifier until she started teething. We figured it gave her something to chew on and massage the gums. She is now 1 and her molars are coming in. When she lets us, we use the teething swabs, but she has been chewing on the pacifier like you wouldn't believe. She turns it sideways in her mouth and off to one side or the other so that the back of her mouth is doing the chomping.
My son was 3 1/2 months when his first tooth came through and also couldn't hold things. So, if you are willing to try holding something like a wet washcloth that you have left in the freezer for him to chew on, that might also help. Nothing made my son happy except for the regular orajel (we didn't know about the teething swabs then) and it would only work for about 20 min, but sometimes that was enough to get his mind onto something else. Every kid is different, so just trying everything may be the best, but once the tooth breaks through, things will get much better...until the next one. But don't worry, it gets easier to deal with, for everyone.
Good luck

orajel works like a charm - make sure you don't use too much
Also - they have teething rings that you can put in the freezer or warm up then give to your son - the cold will numb the gums - that plus orajel may get him some good sleep etc.

I found when my son was teething that motrin worked better than tylenol... and orajel helps too... try the combination of motrin and the orajel, it seemd to help with my son - why had all of his teeth before he was two years old (including his two year molars) - and was on all table food by 9 months old because he had all of his teeth! hopefully you'll be fortunate enough to get it "over with" quickly! most drug stores/pharmacies have some homeopathic tablets which are supposed to dissolve pretty quickly - almost immediately - and are supposed to work very well (i personally never tried them, but have friends who have). it will get better once he is able to chew on things - ie. teethers or teething biscuits (which if you didn't know pretzel rods work really good because they dissolve pretty easily so they don't choke on them). good luck! it will improve - honest!

Hi A.,
You should try the wet washcloth in the freezer, my mother in law gave me that great idea another thing I use to do for my daughter, which at 2years old now I wouldn't think of, was massage his gums sometimes just the pressure on the gums may make him relax, just be careful when those teeth do come in, ouch! good luck and I'd like to say that teething gets better but it will quickly pass.

Hey A.,
Been down this avenue twice already. I spoke with my group of Peds. and they said that the product that I wanted to use was safe and all natural and to give it a try. I did and found the relief for both of my children at the time. My daughter is now 10 and my son is 14 months old. Go to Eckard Drug store and buy Hylands teething tablets they work great. Put two tablets into his bottle and shake it up so they disolve. If he seems to sleep a little longer afterwards it is nothing to worry about it is only because he is feeling relieved. Good luck with everything. Sincerely, I. G.

A good idea I found to work is to let him bite on your finger, freeze a teething ring and hold it in his mouth. I realize you might not feel you have the time to do this, but, take the time so he can feel better. I know this will help the pain for the little guy.
God bless!!

Hey A., I know exactly what you’re going through! My almost 4 month old son is also teething. Ways that I have been able to comfort his pain is helping him chew on cooled teething rings that I've put in the refrigerator. It took him a little bit to get used to the cold feeling, but I guess the relief was worth the cold feeling. I have also been brushing his gums and it seems to relieve the pain almost immediately. I know it works because part of the pain from teething comes from bacteria making the gum tissue tender. So by brushing his gums it eliminates the bacteria and gets rid of the pain. Gerber Grins and Giggles makes a "toothpaste" that's safe for infants 3 months and older cause it's fluoride free and safe to swallow. It comes with a little finger brush that's used to massage and brush the gums. Plus my little one loves to look in the mirror while he's getting his "teeth" brushed.
If your little boy is still having trouble I'd recommend using baby orajel to put directly onto his gums...it works on contact and is faster than Tylenol.
Best of luck!

Wet/frozen washcloths definitely seem to be a favorite, but be careful with the Motrin as pediatricians are pretty adamant about waiting until at least 6 months to give it to them. It is a tough time for sure. My son is 18 months old and has been teething constantly since 4 months, so I feel for you!

try oragel, it comes in a liquid you can either put it on your finger and put it in his mouth or it comes on a q-tip which you brake and the liquid come down to the swab of the q-tip and you then rub it on his gums. i also gave my daughter a cold clean wash cloth to suck on she loved it.

Wipe your baby's face often with a cloth to remove the drool and prevent rashes from developing.
Give your baby something to chew on. Make sure it's big enough so that he or she can't swallow it and that it can't break into small pieces. A wet washcloth placed in the freezer for 30 minutes makes a handy teething aid - just be sure to wash it after each use. Rubber teething rings are also good, but avoid the ones with liquid inside because they may break. If you use a teething ring, be sure to take it out of the freezer before it becomes rock hard - you don't want to bruise those already swollen gums!
Rub your baby's gums with a clean finger.
Never tie a teething ring around a baby's neck, as it could get caught on something and strangle the baby.
If your baby seems irritable, acetaminophen may help - but always consult your child's doctor first. Never place an aspirin against the tooth, and don't rub whiskey on your baby's gums

I would ask your Doctor if this is okay before you try it. My sons Doctor had him on Motrin/Tylenol. He would take Motrin then 4 hours later Tylenol then 4 hours later Motrin. And so on. Also I know you said he cant hold things yet, but if you wet and freeze a wash cloth ( i bought a new pack just for this) and you hold it and let him chew, it works so well. Also they sell these oragel things. They look like q tips but you break them in half and orgel comes out. They also work great!! I hope something works teething is suck a hard time.
Peace & Love, T.

Hi A.!
Baby orajel works great too! They even have a night time formula that lasts a little longer.
Cold teething rings work great too, but be careful, some are not supposed to be frozen, just refrigerated.
I also found some of those pre-made plastic icecubes, some of them are big enough to give a baby, and obviously those can be frozen.
Good Luck!

Goodmorning A.,
Sorry your little one is having such a difficult time. It makes us mommies feel so bad when we can't seem to ease the pain for our children. This is however something that they all do go through, and you're right it will get easier when he has the ability to hold onto things himself. In the meantime, have you tried a frozen wash cloth? Just wet a wash cloth and put it in the freezer for a little while...and let him suck on it. It works just as well as a teehter but might not be as heavy, and you could play with him with it at the same time, kind of a tatict to get him to stop thinking so much about it at the time. I also used things like orajel with my two, when it got really bad. For the most part though, you are doing all you can do. I'm sure your sons pediatrician will have some great reasources for you as well. Hang in there it gets easier hon. Let us know how things progress for ya. Hope the idea helps.

Try having the baby sit in your lap and let him chew on a frozen bagel while you hold it...I've also found that there are teething tablets (you can get them at a drug store) that are safe for babies. There are new teethers out there too that are very light weight rubber and have little bumps on them. I have a nine month old and those seem to help him the most. Good luck!!

Dear A.,
I think there is something that the pharmacist recommended for teething. I hope that works for you. There was also a clear rubber toy that you could put in the freezer and when it was cold enough, but not frozen, it also offered some relief for teething.
Just keeping rocking him, if you have a rocker....if you don't, get one!
