Does anyone have any teething tips for me? My 9-month-old son is teething (2 top teeth coming in) and other than tons of drool, he is sucking/biting his thumb, and unusally cranky. Any remedies that you've found to work?
Thanks!

I used those teething tablets as well as those gerber biscuits. Both of those worked wonders for both of my boys. Believe or not pickles helped my oldest son. I would give him those baby dill pickles and he loved them. He would suck on them until the juices was gone and give them back. I hope I helped out.

If he is eating solids well, try frozen peas. I did this with my older two - it is healthy, too! My 8 year old still likes to eat frozen peas! She thinks it is a treat. Also, my pediatrician told me, as well, not to use the baby orajel type of numbing jell. She stated that it is hard to tell just how much they are ingesting and could pose a choking hazard. I never had luck with it anyway. Good luck!

I have a 9-month old who has a tooth coming in as well. The only thing that I can say is that baby Motrin has worked wonders! I talked to her pediatrician too, and he said NOT to give baby ambesol as it could choke them. And I've heard other parents giving that to their children. Who knows what to believe! But for me, and her, baby Motrin is working a little, at least it numbs the pain for a little while. Also try teething rings that can go into the refrigerator, and try a cold washcloth. My ped. also said to put an ice cube wrapped in a washcloth on their gums, as to that might help numb the pain. Good luck!! :)

The teething tablets did zero good for our little one, but they're not that expensive to give a go!
The oragel wears off too fast to be worth using, atleast in my son's case.
My son really enjoys apples when his teeth are hurting him. I slice them in to slivers now, but when he was 9 months old I would slice them much larger (like half of a whole side, so he couldn't swallow it/choke). He eventually got to where he was biting little pieces off and eating them.
We also have done the popsicle trick, the ones in the long plastic tube like containers. Just wrap a paper towel around where you'll hold it (gets cold after a while!), cut a small hole in the end so juice will come out as it melts, and we crush up the end so it's not a solid block of ice. The small hole makes it less messy and lasts longer. We usually put a bib on to save his clothing too :).
Tylenol is a lifesaver in our house hold as well.
Chewing rings have never been a favorite for him, we even tried the mesh ring containers found at Target but he wouldn't use them, I don't think he liked the texture of the fabric. They're a great idea in theory though!

Try teething tablets. You can find them at Walgreens & they are all natural little tablets that dissolve instantly. Don't know how they work but they definately do! Also my kids loved the little teething net. It looks similsr to a large pacifier but is a net on the end that you can put fresh cold or frozen food in & they can chew on it without any worry of them biting off a chunk & choking. Good Luck!

Motrin works the best for our son. Tylenol doesn't seem to help as much. As for teethers, I don't know. My son prefers to chomp on his thumb. Another thing that might help is cold water in his bottle or sippy cup. It just feels really good on the gums. Good luck!

We also use the clean wash clothe idea but instead of a wet one in the freezer, I put an icecube in it with a rubberband around the wash clothe to hold in the ice. This gives them something to naw on as well as the relief with the cold. Our girls also loved the pop ice popcicles when they were teething. You will have to help him though. Stock up on those now before they go out of season and you can't find them anywhere.

These have worked for me. I have tried all of them except the teething necklace, but my SIL swears by them....Hope these help.
Mom of 6 going on 7

1. A wash cloth soaked in camomile tea and frozen is great for chewing on when baby is teething.

2. Rub a small piece of ginger root on the babies gums to soothe the pain.

3. Rub a little brandy on the gums with your finger. It is perfectly safe.

4. Let baby gum on frozen waffles. Just be sure to watch carefully so she doesn't choke on what she gets off.

5. "As soon as your baby start getting his/hers teeth start giving them about 3oz a day of home made carrot juice or if they don’t like the carrot juice lot’s of squashed carrots in the food these will help them not to have pain when the teeth are coming out"

6. "An Allspice necklace is a quick and painless way to relieve teething symptoms of fever and crankiness and teeth will pop in faster."
Allspice contains Tanin which is a natural ingredient that tightens the gums!
You will need whole Allspice beads (found in the spice aisle of most grocery stores), dual-duty thread (or elastic) and a small needle. You can also add decorative beads or a clasp, but neither are necessary. Necklaces can be left on 24/7 and only need to be replaced every 3-4months!
Boil the Allspice beads for 7 minutes, drain and string onto thread then tie or fasten around babies neck. You should see almost immediate results! I have been using an Allspice necklace on my 18mo since he was 5m and I have had no trouble with teething. My newest little one just got his necklace put on yesterday!
Baby will still want to chew on things and you may need to use ora-gel (or whatever works for you) once in awhile because teeth popping through is still painful, but you should see a dramatic decrease in crankiness! And it's a cheap fix...it should only cost $6-10 and you will be able to make at least 4 necklaces!"

Good morning, A.! I used teething tablets with my daughter. They are homeopathic and you can get them at Wal-Mart, etc. Another thing that worked for us was a wet washcloth that I let sit in the freezer for a bit. Don't let it freeze, just get really cold. Doesn't last long, but seemed to work for a bit!

Good luck!

My advice is over twenty year old, but I used oragel and tylenol for pain, frozen teething rings for the pain and chewing. This too shall pass.

I used "teething tablets" with my 3rd and 4th children. I got them at Wal-Mart and they are some kind of herbal thing. I can't remember the brand, but the pharmacy should know where to find them or they may be in the baby section too. I checked them with my doctor and he said they were safe for my baby. You might run it by your doctor if you decide to try them. They are this tiny white pill that disolves immediately when it comes in contact with moisture. I would put one or two in a spoon with a drop of formula or water and smoosh them with my finger...Or after baby is used to it you can just put one at a time on their tongue...and kind of rub it in a circle... it will dissove quickly... Worked well for my kids. Other options are a frozen wash cloth for him to chew on...good old baby orajel...popsicles...tylenol...and lots of patients.

I don't know what others have said, but I have heard that motrin works better for some babies than tylenol. I would maybe only use it at night so he can get some good sleep. You surely don't want to give it to him 24/7, but maybe you could just treat the symptoms--only when he's crabby from it or at night. Oragel helps only temporarily and i know some peds don't recommend it. I have also seen teething tablets, but I don't know if they're any different than oragel.

A damp, frozen washcloth might help his gums feel better, or soft teething ring.

my son would never use his teething rings. the best thing i found to work and it came in double use with the warm weather. i went and bought his own wash clothes and then i would fold then and wet them and then freeze then in a snack size zipplock bag. he love to chew on them and then suck the water when it was hot outside. and all you have to do is wash then and refreeze. another thing he loves to teeth on is rubber duckies. he loves how soft they are and he loves to make them squeek with his mouth. he laughs every time.

one thing i have found helpful (besides motrin/tylenol combo) is to wet a clean washrag... or two, and put them in the freezer. now i'm careful to not let it freeze solid, as that would probably hurt! good luck... meg

A. I have a story for you about a teething remedy. Although the story is funny, the remedy works. My son was so uncomfortable when he was teething and when he got to be about 18 months old he had a real hard time with some of it. My mother told me to use whiskey on his gums, yes whiskey. Apparently it was used by her mother, and her grandmother, so on and so on. The whiskey leaves a numbing feeling, and it is also a kind of antiseptic. My son seemed to enjoy the taste so he did fight me when I would rub it on, he seemed to like the feeling of it on his gums and he would stop fussing. My daughter was born about this time and when she was 2 weeks old we took a trip out of town. We were staying in a hotel and I needed to just get out of the room for a few minutes so I took her with me, my son was sleeping so my husband stayed with him. I told him if he wakes up and seems fussy about his gums just use the whiskey. After about a half hour he brought my son down to the lobby and we traded kids. My son kind of smelled like whiskey so I asked if had used it and he said he had. About that time my son burped and it smelled like whiskey. I looked at my husband and asked him if he had rubbed it on his gums and he said no, he had given him a sip of it. Apparently I was not spcific enough in my instructions. My son however did not feel much discomfort for most of the day, it is funny now looking back but not so much at the time. If you are willing to try a little on your finger rubbed on the gums you might be surprised at the result.

Hi A., We have found that Little Teethers works, similar to baby orajel(My husband used it on a toothache and said it worked pretty quickly). He also likes to chew on cold teethers. The best is made by Soothie, it's green with handles and a paci, it goes in the freezer so gets very cold, it's soft to chew and is not filled with any liquid, a solid piece. I would get two so once the first one warms up another one is ready to go. The washcloths are also a good remedy. If it gets really bad Infant Tylenol to help with the pain. Hope that help and good luck!

I used a combintation of Hylands teething tablets and teething gel, along with cold wet washclothes to chew on and nursed a lot. My son has been teething since he was 5 months old (he is currently 13 months and getting his "I" teeth). I give him dye free Infant Tylenol (Dr. Sear's website gives you a great guide for how much)when he had a teething fever.

Hi A.,

Although it's been a few years since I stayed up with cranky teething babies (my youngest is 23). When my oldest cut her first teeth we got 8 in at the same month. She really liked chewing on a wash rag or a toothbrush! When all else failed, I used my dads advice and rubbed some whiskey on her gums. Shocking I know, but didn't seem to hurt her - she is 28 and an optometrist. And it worked!

Good luck - N.

Hyland's or just straight chamomile that can be found at any natural foods store. My daughter also wears an amber teething necklace most of the time and we have had very few issues with teething pain. You can buy them online at Inspired by Finn.

The teething tablets that the other person responded with are WONDERFUL! We found them with the 3rd one and they worked like a charm. Plus no gooey mess!

They are a homeopathic and I found them on the top shelf at Wal-mart in the vitamin section. Unlike the previous reply on these, I just placed it in my sons mouth and let it dissolve, but I can see if you have problems getting it in their mouth doing what she did.
