Teething - Keller, TX

My 12 month old daughter just got her 3rd molar and seems to be getting another tooth (which will be the 13th one). She didn't seem to have trouble with the first few teeth, but right now she has been really fussy, irritable, seems to cry when the littlest things happen, and sometimes grabs her cheeks. I'm trying to figure out if this is related to teething or just something that a 12 month old does? I don't know whether to help her through this with Tylenol and such for teething or to see this as just pure temper tantrums. I don't actually see a tooth coming through at the moment, but I feel like she seems in pain. I don't want to just cater to these tantrums with Tylenol, but I also don't want to ignore them if it's pain. What are some of the symptoms that come with teething?

And on a side note, she all of a sudden can't stand having her diaper changed or clothes changed. She cries and sometimes full on screams when it comes time to do this. Anyone else have this?

What can I do next?

I used hyland's gel & tablets. It really helped with the overall pain. There's also a 30x version (concentrated chamomille)for active teething. I saved the tylenol for nights when he really needed it, but those were few & far between. My son went through the same thing with the diapers, it passed fairly quickly. You might also try changing detergents, she could have a mild allergy to the residual soap. Teething sympoms can vary wildly, but drooling, fussyness, fingers & things in mouth & biting are all common symptoms.

My son would always become very aggressive which is totally not like him when he would teeth. Then once the tooth broke through he would be his old self again. It seems like almost every time he did this I would worry that he was changing or something.
But I was wrong thank goodness. :)

It definitely sounds like she's in pain and this is probably triggering the tantrums. Try Hylands teething pills too. They're homeopathic, otc and you can give these during the day when maybe Tylenol might be too much. We had better luck with baby Motrin so you might try that instead. We also had a bunch of different things for my son to gnaw on like frozen bagels, frozen peas and corn. Those were life savers.

Hang in there. It does get better. I vaguely recall my son putting up fights with his diaper.

My daughter is almost 15 months and she seems to go through the same thing when something is wrong; such as the fussiness, tantrums, irritability...I thought she was just starting to act out and wasn't sure if I should treat it as behavioral. Come to find out she had 2 ear infections. When Chloe is teething, she looses her appetite and becomes very irritable, along with fever and loose stool. The doctor suggested alternating Motrin and Tylenol every four hours. I didn't give her the full dosage of each medication every four hours, but cut the dosage in half. The Motrin really seemed to help with the pain. Good luck!

Well it seems like it may be both. The fussing over changin clothes is just her being stubborn. The pulling the teeth that is defintely teeth.

Teething is very painful and addressing this will help with the change in behavior. I always start with natural pain relievers such as cold things to chew on but if nothing helps, I try oralgel and/or motrin. After all, it only takes a small dose. As long as you do not over use medicine, it should not hurt you or your child. However, parents who give it all the time worry me.

With the diaper and clothing issues, try changing her standing up. Also, start letting her help by holding items or trying to dress herself.

With my own children and the ones at our school, we change them standing up unless they have a messy bm. We also involve them as much as possible with caring for themselves.

Being prone while awake can feel like a very vunerable position for them.

If she is out of sorts, I would give her some Tylenol or Motrin. My kiddos are terrible teethers, and it really helps.

As for the diaper and clothes changes, that is completely normal. Both my kiddos went through that stage, and my 18 month is still in it. I try to give them a diaper change only toy, that they can have fun with or sing songs. If she is walking you can change her standing up, which seems to help. Sometimes, it just involved gently placing my leg on top of them while I changed their clothes, while I verified her feelings.

For the teething - I was not big on doping my child either. I was afraid as a first time mother that I might over medicate my daughter - after some research I found Hylands Teething Tablets - they are all natural and worked wonderfully all through her teething process....

As far as the changing clothes - my daughter did it breifly - I just made sure she was not cold, and learned to change her while she was still 1/2 asleep - I still do ti today gwtting her ready for daycare.... I wake her my telling her to turn over so I can put her clothes on... good luck - sometimes things are according to their schedule only.

The only think that I can think of is that her teething is making her uncomfortable all over. I have actually been sick as an adult, and even my hair hurt! Maybe that's something that she going through. Just be patient and hang in there. It won't last long.

Hi M.,

I would make sure she isn't having a separate issue that is causing pain- besides the teething. I would take her to the pediatrician to make sure she does not have an ear infection going on at the same time- which would be painful, and would make her irritable when you are changing her or when she lays down, as well as grab at her cheeks/ears. (That's what my 12 month old is going through right now!)

If it is only the teething I like the homeopathic tablets, as well as infant's motrin.

Good luck!
