We need to replace our tv and want to buy a flat screen. I would like recommendations from those of you that have bought one recently. Any brands or types you are happy with, or warnings of what to avoid. Thanks!

So What Happened?

After researching and all your advice, we purchased a samsung 40" lcd 1080p 120h at Sam's club last weekend. We are very happy with it so far. Thanks for all your help!

We have an LCD tv. My in laws bought a new tv just before we did and they were told by the salesperson that plasma tvs break down over time and only last at max 10 years, and then need to be replaced. So that is why we decided to go with LCD over plasma.

I highly recommend Samsung LCD's. We bought one last year and decided to go with the LCD because Plasma's get a really bad glare (2 of my inlaws have them, and the glare is horrible...depending on where you put them). The picture is great and we liked it so much we got one for our bedroom too!

We have had a Samsung "regular TV" for over 10 years now and it still works beautifully and we still use it.
We decided to buy another TV so we went with a Samsung LCD flat screen 3 years ago and have had absolutely no problems with it. I will stick with this brand in the future for sure! Happy hunting!

Just because it is a flat screen doesn't make it higher quality. My mom and dad bought an LCD flat screen and the picture is terrible. I don't have the heart to say anything since because they were so excited about it. Everyone has their own preferences but I feel that Plasma is far superior to LCD and I wouldn't even consider buying an LCD. Of course plasma is more expensive but I would save up your money if you need to and wait until you can afford it. We have had a 42" and a 50" Panasonic for almost 1 &2 years and absolutely love them.

We've had a 45" Visio LCD (sold at Walmart and Sam's Club) for over 2 years now. For 20% less than the cost of the better name brands, it has been an awesme TV. It has just as good a picture as my brother's Sony and my father's Samsung.

Also, if you have a lot of windows in the room with the TV, I would suggest not going with a Plasma. They have a glass pane over the TV image which gets really bad glare.

We just bought a flat screen. Samsung and Sony are the best brands. I would put Samsung over Sony. You want to get one with a high dpi. The higher the better picture quality. We looked at Consumer Reports and Samsung was rated the best. We got ours at Best Buy and they were very knowledgeable and helpful. If you buy a HD tv which most are these days) you have to have digital cable or HD for the picture to look good. We have Directv without HD and the picture comes in great. My in-laws had regular Comcast cable and had to upgrade to get a good picture.

stick with anything Sony (especailly flat screen) or Panasonic and you will have a tv that lasts for quite some time. We just bought a flat screen this year, and according to Consumer reports, Samsung did well too.

we have had our sony bravia 48" lcd for 3 years......its wonderful....go to consumer reports online or get the magazine at a book store.....i used the consumer reports guide & looked at peoples comments to make a decision.....lcd doesnt get as hot & doesnt use as much energy & lasts longer.......enery prices are suppose to increase by 50% in 2010 so you may want to research that a bit more......grants has fantastic prices too.

Hi B.:

I purchased my very first 22" flat screen tv around Christmas time at Office Depot and I love it. I bought a SAMSUNG model. SAMSUNG is probably the best in the industry. Other top brand names are:

Sony
JVC
LG

After shopping quite a bit, and questioning salespeople in electronics, we have been told that the three beginning with "S" are the best. Sony, Sharp and Samsung. We bought a Sony a year ago and are very happy with it. My son bought a Sharp and loves it as well.
