I guess the young active couple could pick a side and decide if they like it hard or soft.
lol, sorry i couldnt resist
Thinking about a new bed. anybody have a temperpedic or a sleep number???
I could really use some pros and cons.
I heard that memory foam can break down with time and be to soft (this has been the case with my current nock-off foam bed)
but i have also heard that the middle of a sleep number bed is not really good for the young "active" couple.
love to have your thoughts!

My husband and I have had been plagued with back problems. So we decided to get a sleep # bed, how could you go wrong right? He liked it more firm than I did so we got the bed that you adjust to you. WRONG! Have not had a good nights sleep yet. We have had it about 3 or 4 years now. I don't know what it is, I just can't find my #. The sides are soft, so the middle of the bed will not pose a problem. LOL
Perhaps its just me, but it was the most wasteful $3000 we ever spent. We bought the medium priced bed. Not even the lowest of them. Good luck. maybe it will do better for you.
My mom has a sleep number bed. Its comfy but she says it was way overpriced for what it actually is. and you have to do some sort of maintenance to it once in awhile like letting it air out... which is a pain because you have to remove the cover. Both beds are very overpriced, that's why they spend all the money the do on the great advertising.... they hook a lot of suckers. Comfy? Both are. But you can find a great bed for a lot less. Go to the source and lay on some beds with hubby, its fun ;) JMHO
We have a sleep number bed, and while I don't hate it, I think I could have spent much less money on another bed and liked it at least as much, if not more. I was hoping it would help with my back pain, but it doesn't really, and I never have seemed to be able to find my sleep number. However, the friends that recommended it to me can't get enough of theirs. Maybe it's just me. lol
The definite plus to the sleep number bed is that you can kind of have it both ways. For example, if you like a firm mattress and he likes soft, and you get a king or a queen, you can both get what you want. The other plus {and a good tip for you if you go with the sleep number}, is that during "active" time, you can set both sides as firm or as soft as you want...I find that firm is the way to go!
Go to a hotel and try each one out. We lasted about 2 hours on the Temperpedic. It was hot and you had to lie still for 20 minutes while the foam heated up and molded to your shape is how they explained it. It was so hard and awful.
We have bought 5 sleep number beds over the years. I would only get the dual numbers so each can adjust their own side. I hated the most expensive one and we returned it with the temperpedic type foam. If you buy online, you can return it. If you buy from a store, they won't take beds back.
just got a tempurpedic and am sleeping better than ever. they have a 20-year guarantee, and I wish we hadn't chased the budget so much 15 years ago
my dad had a memory foam pillow. it got so greasy it was discusting. my parents bought a memory foam mattress and have had it several years (fiveish). It has been fine so far. They put a mattress cover and a sheet. not just the sheet alone. so the grease (body oils) have not seemed to build up like it did on that pillow. i would call the sleep number bed company and ask them about activity going on in the center of the bed would it be wizer to jump on the bed on one side. if they lean towards saying yes its most likely correct.
We have had both and found the temperpedic very, very hot. It was comfortable, don't get me wrong. Just hot.
The caveat I would give is that we live in Texas and never set the air conditioner lower than 78 degrees at night, trying to save money and the environment. So maybe that was it.
So we prefer the sleep number, because you don't have that problem. However we do keep our numbers pretty low and have had to occassionally unzip the sleep number and adjust the foam sides because they've slipped out of place.
I have a sleep number bed and love it...if I am the only one in it. My husband likes his setting at about 65 while I like about 35. He is almost twice my weight and if he is not perfectly on his half, his weight makes my side seem harder (even though it still says 35). It then causes him to "roll down-hill" and make my side even harder. We both hate it now.
Well have had our temporpedic quite a while and love it! I am very hot blooded and did not feel hot as others had told me. And it has helped my back/neck and my husband used to toss and turn A LOT and he rarely does now.
Did not like the sleep number in the store. And the one thing I noticed was if we would have gotten a king it was basically 2 twin air mattresses pushed together with this horrible hard thing in the middle.
About 8 years ago, we bought a Tempurpedic bed. It lasted one week in our house before we returned it. My husband was just too hot and uncomfortable on it. We then bought a Sleep Number bed and have been very happy with it. My parents, on the other hand, LOVE their Tempurpedic bed and have had one for well over 10years. It really depends on what you like. 8 yrs ago, Tempurpedic had a 3wk trial thingie with free return if we decided not to keep it. If they still have a similar deal, maybe you could try it for a few weeks, then decide.
We have a temperpedic bed. We got it about 5 years ago when I was pregnant with my first. I couldn't stand the springs of my older mattress poking me in my hips while I was sleeping. My husband was in a bad accident and was hoping that the temperpedic would help his neck, but it hasn't. We like the bed, but it has started to get some sink holes. They said it has a 20 year warranty against that, but we don't even wanna go through the hassle. I do like the fact that it won't collect bed bugs or dust mites like other beds do. Being the tired mom I am, I run to that bed after the kids are asleep, I'm very comfortable in it.
Motionless Waterbed.
The best sleep (and funky time) you will EVER get.
Its NOT hot and its forming to the body when you sleep. YET, its hard enough to, ahem,do what you gotta do....(personally, I think ALL motionless WB's should come with a soundtrack of Luther VanDross)....
We've had our Sleep Number bed for 4 years now and LOVE it. DH is about a 30 and mine is 55 and we've had no issues with the difference. The number comforms to YOUR body - not the air pressure of the bed without a person in it - so if you're in the middle of the bed, you really don't notice the difference that much. It's been through several moves and has done fine.
We did have one issue about a year ago with a pump going out - the bed comes with 2 pumps tho, so you don't have to replace the entire thing. We were out of warranty but were able to buy a replacement pump (refurbished) at about half the cost. Customer service was great.
To the PP - there is no maintenance with a SN bed. Maybe she has an older model?
We've stayed at hotels with both. With the Tempurpedic, we were both hot and I for one found it claustrophobic. With the Sleep Number, I suppose the ones we've had were worn out. We both like firmer mattresses but the "balloon" tended to deflate during the night and we were left with uncomfortable nights and morning backaches.
We've stuck with plain old Sertas and just rotate/flip them every six months (Memorial Day & Thanksgiving).
Good luck.
It must be a personal preference thing so I would check to see if you can try it and return it for a full refund. We have the king sleep number bed and although our numbers are very different, we have had no problem with the center of the bed no matter what we are doing. We have had it for 12 years and two moves and have had no problems. We have never had to do anything for maintenance. My husband has had back issues and neck surgery so he always woke up with back pain until we got the sleep number bed. He no longer wakes up with a sore back.
I am not a fan of the memory foam. We got rid of a bed like that that supposedly had a one year "love your bed guarantee." (Right) After a while we werer sleeping in sink holes. Then we got a sleep number. It felt great in the store, but like a cheap air mattress at home. It basically is two air matresses. Sleep number has a better return policy, but it still cost us $425. We now have a Europa.
Friends of ours spent a few nights at the Wynn hotel in Vegas and ended up ordering that same mattress online for 1000 bucks, 4000 less than what the hotel was selling it for. They ended up having to buy the pillows at Wynn since she couldn't find those. Dh and I stayed at another hotel there and we couldn't get enough of that mattress, either. I am planning to call and find out what kind it is. Sleep number seems gimmicky and Ive heard mixed reviews on the tempurpedic.
sleep #
We've had one for over 10yrs, love it
We were also in that same boat. I went online and found so many negative reviews on the sleep number, it kind of scared me off. We went ahead with the tempurpedic, and I love it. My husband could be happy sleeping on a rock. I tossed and turned on our old bed, and I sleep 100% better now. I also have a tempurpedic pillow that I love. I'd highly recommend it.
We have a Sleep Number and love it. Although our sides are different, there's no "separation" between the mattresses that bothers us. As for the "activeness", we haven't had any problems!
