My son is 9 years old. he has had right sided testicle swelling for 9 days. He had an ultrasound done which showed that the testicle was larger and the epididymis was very large. The ultrasound did show blood around it. The testicle was getting a good amount of blood supply to it. The urology doctors (seen more than one) do not seem to be concerned. He has been on antibiotics for 2 days and nothing is getting better. If he stands for more than an hour its swells up, he pretty much has to be laying down with ice on it constantly for it to feel better. The doctors cannot tell me what is going or why this is happening. He has not had any trauma to that area.
we have been to the ER and the doctors just keep saying everything is fine nothing is wrong go to Dr ologist follow up with your doctor. they don't think he has testicular torsion because he has plenty of blood flow to the cast even usually with torsion there is no blood flow
I would get another opinion, if possible from a doctor who does not work with or partner with the doctor you are seeing now. I have 2 sons and 2 grandsons and have never encountered this, so as a Mom I would be all over it.
go to a different practice for another opinion. My son complained of this when he was a freshman in highschool. we went to the doctor. the doctor examined it and said it was an infection turned out that was not the case. it was a torqued testical. I probably spelled that wrong. but what happened was the testicle turned over and cut off the blood supply. if the first doctor had correctly diagnosed it it might have been able to be reversed. but as it was we wasted 3 days on antibiotices that did nothing. he had to have surgery and a testicle removed. get another opinion from a different practice asap
My very young nephew was having a similiar problem but wasn't have pain (maybe because he was younger). Anyway, it turned out to be an odd type of hernia. Swelling would come and go based on the fluid that was causing it...guess it would come and go (I may not be explaining it very well but rather just the basic idea). Went the went in to remove what they thought was a "growth" it wasn't there...the swelling/fluid had went down. Then later it was back.
Do you have a kids specialty hospital near you? I ask because my sister took my nephew to the local kids hospital (AI Dupont). Their doctor wasn't there when the swelling returned, the other doctor determined what was really happening. If not, can you seek out a pediatric urologist?
Welcome to mamapedia!!! As a mother, I can understand your concern and frustration of NOT KNOWING what is going on.
I don't know of a Children's Hospital in Grand Junction, but I would look for one. And if I couldn't find one? I would make the 3 hour drive up to Aurora for that Children's hospital.
That this has been going on for 9 days and you are being put off by ER docs? Sorry - i would start making NOISE...something to get action for my child.
Have they checked his kidneys? Bladder? Have they checked him for a hernia? If the antibiotics are NOT working - then something else is wrong. DO NOT stop until you have an answer for your son. Have they done a blood draw to see if there is an infection in his body? WHY did they give him antibiotics?? I'm sorry. I guess i have more questions than answers.
Ice for too long can hurt more than it helps. Make sure there is a towel wrapped around the ice pack and the ice pack is not sitting directly on his skin. You don't want ice burn. The longest you should keep an ice pack on is 20 minutes...then off for 20.

It is common for doctors to not know what is causing many different symptoms. They are treating it with antibiotics. Two days is not very long. I suggest that you just need to wait awhile longer for them to work. Remember that these doctors have seen hundreds of patients, have done hours and hours of study and would know if this is something to be concerned about. They've seen the worse case scenerios. This isn't the beginning of such a case. I urge you to have confidence and wait to see what happens in a few more days time.
I'd get him to an ER now. Sherry reminded me of someone this happened to, he required surgery. For your son to have to be laying down with ice on it he can't function, 2 days on an antibiotic should have started to work by now. Maybe a different doctor will view the situation differently.
I agree with Gramma. Get him to the ER. This is kind of scary, honestly. What if he has a hernia?

2 of my boys have had hernia operations. One at about 11/12 and the other was about 8 months. My last son also had a swollen testicular, and it lasted for a few months but he was also under 2. If you can hold a flashlight up to the testicle and it can 'shine through' meaning it isn't dark, it's most likely nothing to worry about. I was taught this by an ER doc, if it's 'dark' it shouldn't be takin lightly and you may just have to keep trying doctors and hospitals.
