I was wondering what is the right bed for my son to be sleeping in. I know this is extremely horrible, but he has never slept alone and he is now 4 1/2yrs old. He was a premmature baby and we have been letting him sleep with us either his grandma or myself. But is about to change because his dad and I are moving out to our own home and he would have his own bedroom and he would start sleeping by himself. I wanted to buy him a toddler bed or one of those spiderman, but is that appropriate for his age. Thanks for your input.

What can I do next?

Both my girls started sleeping in a regular twin bed at 18 months old. They were eager to get out of their crib!

I think it's a waste of money to buy a toddler bed because they'll out grow it soon. If you're worried about him falling out - use a railing & lower the bed to the lowest point. My (almost) 3 yr. old has her bed that way. My (almost) 5 yr. old insists on no railing but there have been a couple times she fell out so I just lay some pillows on the floor.

Good Luck!

Hi, T.. Here's what I would do. A toddler bed is probably fine for him right now but only for a little while because he will get too big for it soon. Does he still take naps? If so, put him in a big bed to sleep during naptime without you next to him. However, it's okay to lay next to him until he falls asleep the first few times. Before you move start talking about his new room and a bed of his own now. Build it up...that he is getting to be a big boy and deserves his own room with his own bed. Then, when you are ready to move, take him to the store with you to pick out his new bed. Let him also pick out his own sheets and comforter. This will all help with the transition. Be prepared, however, that he may come to your room during the night and try to crawl in bed with you until he gets out of that habit.

Good luck!

Hi T.,
My 4 1/2 and my 21/2 year old both sleep in a normal size twin bed.
I wouldn't buy a toddler bed for a 4,5 year old. I would rather invest in a good twin mattras that he can use for many years than spent money on a toddler bed that he uses for 1 or 2 years. But that's my personal opinion.

I think it's a very wise decision to let him finally sleep on his own. I think he will be really exited to have his own room, so it's probably not a problem for him. But start with it from day one, and stick to it.

Good luck with the move! Take care, I.

My almost 5 yr old and 3 yr old sleep in a full size bed. I just went out and got them their favorite character bedding set for them so it was a easier transition. For my 3 yr old we got the low profile boxsprings so it was easier for her to get in and out of her bed of course she got a new big girl bed when she was 2 1/2. I would suggest you take your son out to help pick out a big boy bed that he would like. It was something fun for my girls and they enjoyed picking something out for their new rooms.

Good Luck! :)

My 3 year old sleeps in a twin bed. We put it on the room of his floor fist for hime to get used to when he was 2. then when we added a bedrail. He loves it. I got his favorite sheets and we have fun reading books together and I lay with him briefly before I say night night and that's it. It's so healthy for you and for him to have a room and bed of his own!

I remember when he as about 2 1/2 and he wanted to come in our room so bad (becasue that's where his new baby sister was) We made a really fun tent, and used flash lights (only in Jack's big bed) and he loves doing that every now and then..it's cool he says!!!
