Thera-flu While Nursing?

Your OB's office should have a nursae omn call that you can ask. I would suggest this if you are feeling really awful.

I think thera flu has pseudophedrine in it, if so that is not safe to take while nursing or pregnant. Regular tylenol should be OK to help any aches, but as someone else suggested you should check and see if you should be nursing while sick. (I've never been told not to, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.) You could also check with the pharmacisit but they don't always know and if you have other health questions you definitely want to ask a nurse so call your doctors office they should have an after hours number or an answering service for this types of issues!

For the people answering that you shouldn't nurse your baby while you are sick obviously have very little education in breastfeeding. When a mother is sick she producess antibodies for that illness which the baby will recieve therefore keeping them from getting as ill if they catch it from you. As for taking a decongestant, you can take it while breastfeeding just try not to take to much because it can affect you milk supply. In the event it does affect your milk supply just stop taking it.

the good thing is that your son does not get sick while you are nursing!!! If you can, continue.

I was given a good rule of thumb regarding medications from my midwife and pediatrician. If the active ingredient is safe for your baby (in the appropriate dose) than it is safe for you to take in the appropriate dose. So, acetimetiphen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (motrin) are safe for you to take so long as you follow the dosing instructions to a T. I wouldn't take any combination medications because it makes it too easy to overdose on something--I don't know if TheraFlu falls into this category or not. If you are primarily feeling achy...take some Tylenol or Motrin and drink a lot of tea with lemon and honey.

Unless you are having trouble staying hydrated (sip sip sip!), there is not reason not to nurse while you have the flu. You will have to be extra diligent about getting enough fluids, but you have the possibility of passing your a baby a lot of extra antibodies. I never had influenza while nursing, but did nurse through a couple of really miserable 24 hour stomach bugs--imagine me sitting on the toilet and throwing up in the bathtub. It was actually the easiest way to get my infant fed while I felt so awful.

i dont think i would do that it might hurt your baby by takin that kind of stuff i would ask the doctor first.to be on the safe side.hope u feel better

You poor thing -- there is nothing like being sick while nursing and wondering what to take. My doc told me that anything with an antihistamine will dry you up, and I'm not sure if Theraflu has that (I think there are several different types of Theraflu), but there is a website that you can refer to that will tell you if it's safe to take:

I had to refer to this when I had a bladder infection while nursing because the doctor prescribed something I couldn't take -- glad I checked first. When in doubt, call your OB, pediatrician, or ask the pharmacist -- they have a book that can look in to see if it's safe. Make sure you have them check the type of Theraflu you get before taking it. as far as taking medicine while nursing....if its not safe to take during pregnancy its not safe while breastfeeding...at least that is what i was told but i would get medical advice before taking anything! Hope your feeling better soon!

if you have flu like symptoms you should not be nursing. also i was under the impression that we needed to take the same medication that we did when we were still pregnant. i know alot of mommas say its ok to have a little. but i am one of those mommas that wont dye her hair and even gets her hair cut at places that dont die hair. so take my opnion for what it is...better safe than sorry. hope you feel well soon.
