I am looking to purchase a new thermometer. My daughter is now 3 and neither of us want to take rectal temps anymore. I have read that ear thermometers can be inaccurate. I am interested in any type of thermometer that gives accurate readings. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi I had trouble with rectal temps, my son wont stay still. Anyway I got the kind of the thermomiter they use in the hospitals,I found it at walgreens, All you have to do is hold the button as you start in the middle of the forehead and swipe down to behind the ear. It takes 3 seconds. well good luck

I know several people that swear by the temporal thermometers that you just rub over the forehead. W.

I've loved our temporal artery thermometer. I've checked the temp vs. a regular thermometer, and it reads accurately. The one I got was about $30.

Hi,

I have very active children who 3 out of 4 can't stay still. I bought a Vicks thermometer. It looks like a lolly pop at the end and it is bendable. It turn green, orange or red depending on the temperature which is interesting to the kids and it gives a number. It takes 8 seconds. I use it under the arm which you have to add a degree. You can get it pretty much any where.

Good luck!

Stacey

Hello. I use the temporal thermometer. You can get it at walmart in the pharmacy section, not the baby section. I have the ear thermometer too, but unless you get the perfect angle and suction it is inaccurate. The temporal just runs across the head and is comparable to rectal. I think it works pretty good. They also sell them at babies r us but is like 15-20 dollars more than walmart, the exact same thermometer.

I HIGHLY recommend a temporal artery thermometer by Exergen. They are sold at places like WalMart. They are a little pricier than a regular thermometer - but very accurate - AND my kids don't mind me taking their temperature. I can even do it when they are asleep. I donated one to our child care center, and they were thrilled! They raved and raved about how it was the best thing ever. Google Exergen and temporal artery thermometer to read more about it. You'll see there are 2 methods of using it - one which involves also placing it behind the ear after swiping the forehead. I recommend that method always, as I've had some misreads the other way (maybe because my girls have bangs, so their foreheads sometimes get sweaty).

I teach toddlers and I take the Children's temperature under their arm (armpit), which works great.

a temporal thermometer has been rated by the american academy of pediatrics as just as accurate as rectal. It just scans the forehead so you can even check while they are sleeping. I would not get a ear one.

I have purchased just about every kind of thermometer out there because I never seem to get accurate readings (oral, rectal, stickers, tempal, ear, axillary). For us, I have found that a regular rectal/oral digital thermometer used under the arm works the best. I even purchased the more expensive axillary thermometer but I get a different reading each time, even when I take a temperature just minutes apart.

We have a Vicks Speed Read digital thermometer; seems to work well enough.

We have the same Vick's thermometer that others have recommended and really love it. (After purchasing several others.)
