Thrush - Carlsbad, CA

my son had a bad case of thrush lasting almost 4wks. I was told to rub the Nystatin with q tips all inside the mouth. It seemed to help a little better. I was also recommended to try rubbing white vinegar all inside the mouth, I did both about 10 minutes apart and in two days the thrush was almost completely gone.

My little guy would gag and then throw up when I gave him medicine (so essentially, I had no idea how much if any, medication he would get)...so, what we found FINALLY worked...was to give him a tiny bit at a time in the corner of his cheek...it took a while, but no gagging. Hope this helps!! :)

Do you nurse your daughter? My daughter had thrush as an infant and I took acidophilus (which she then got through my breast milk). It is located in Yogurt but for a stronger dose you can get capsules of pure acidophilus. I just decided it couldn't hurt to try it and it worked great, it actually cleared it up extremely fast. I also had the Nystatin, but gave up on that really quick because my daughter also gagged on it and it was practically impossible to get it coated in her mouth. I hope this helps

I do not want to alarm you, I am not a medical doctor, but thrush is also a symptom of Type I diabetes. My sister's baby was diagnosed at 11 months after having thrush that did not go away and a yeast infection....please look up the other symptoms, we have learned that in that young, they do not look for diabetes...my sister's baby got VERY sick before someone finally tested her. Do you have diabetes in your family? Check it out please.

My middle child had that as well- there is a natural remedy, but I don't remember it's name! If you go to a pharmacy and ask about it I am sure they can better direct you. I remember that it was bright purple, in a little jar and applied to the mouth with a Qtip. Careful- it stains everything it touches! Sorry to not be of more help, but it's a start!

Yogurt... give to her to eat. Cranberry juice can also help... give to her to drink.

Thrush is basically a yeast infection, so the natural cure is yogurt, or more concentrated, lactobacillus acidophilus. When my son had thrush he also hated the Nystatin, and actually my pediatrician told me it didn't really work anyway. She was the one who recommended the lactobacillus. You can buy liquid lactobacillus at Henry's or Whole Foods, and they have a strawberry flavor that doesn't taste too bad. Lactobacillus is the bacteria found in yogurt, so it is totally safe. When I gave it to my son, his thrush was gone in two days. Good luck!

Thrush is a fungal infection. If you are nursing, take a good quality probiotic such as Garden of Life Primal Defense. Give your baby a high quality baby probiotic as well. Jarro has a very good baby probiotic available. Baby probiotics taste great so your baby will accept it well, mixed in a little breast milk or water. Probiotics will also boost your immune system and that of your baby's. Remember that sugar feeds fungus so no sugar - not even in juice form.

yogurt. I prefer goats milk yogurt because it is easier to digest. It might take some time though, natural remedies don't always work immediately. Also no friut juice.

Buy an aloe vera plant,apply the juice to your breast and the child's mouth and tongue after nursing. The aloe kills the yeast and is natural and safe. My son had thrush for two weeks and after this simple remedy, he has never had thrush again. Plus, you can use the aloe for cuts, burns, and bruises later on. Good luck!

Are you breast feeding? Have you checked with alternative doctors, like Chinese, or maybe Jackie the ayurveda practitioner in Kihei, Maui Herbs?

Gentian Violet worked wonders for us when nothing else did it. Your baby will have a bright purple mouth for a few days but it's great! Google Gentian Violet for the details. Treat yourself too if you are nursing.

My little girl spits th Nystatin out. I found out this morning that if I feed her when she is half asleep she just starts sucking it up. Not sure if it will work for you, but you can try. . Are you treating your nipples if you are breast feeding? That is quite important if you are. Rinse with water and then apply a half water half vinegar solution. My doc also prescribed me the Nystatin cream used for diaper rash to put on my nipples. Good luck to you.

There is a homiopathic remedy called "Ginsin Violet" and you can get it at natrual food stores and lactation centers. It comes in a dark bottle and it appears clear when you put it on a q-tip. However, it quickly turns purple when it hits the air - so be very careful not to spill it on clothes or skin. Don't place the bottle close to the baby while you are administering it - since their little hands always manage to get in the way! You can put it on your breast (but it will turn purple), or in the baby's mouth. Ask the clerk about it. Someplace like Whole Foods is where you are most likely to find it. Good luck.

My daughter also had thrush and the doctor prescribed the same medication. I am not a serious hippy or anything, but I do believe in natural remedies. I read many of the books by Dr. Sears. He recommended eating yogurt that is high in acidophilus and bifidus. I used Nancy's natural yogurt. It is a bit sour but you can add fruit or mix in a little pear or banana baby food. I breastfed my daughter, so I also loaded up on the stuff. I would also take some of the yogurt and swipe it on her tongue and roof of her mouth a couple times a day. The stuff is great for women to help prevent yeast infections (since thrush is a form of yeast infection, I figured it was worth a try). I think it took about a week and a half to fully get rid of the thrush.

Hi, my son has it right now too and has had it before , my doctor gave him the Nystatin but it didn't work so she gave him Diflucan which is also FLUCONAZOLE, it works form the inside instead of the outside like the Nystatin and you only have to give 1 ml the first day then 1/2 m/l ONCE a day for ten days instead of three or four times a day like the Nystatin. So ask your Doctor it is less often so it won't be as bad. And the symtoms disapear after the first day, but you still have to use it. And did they tell you to treat yourself as well?

Using Gentian Violet is also on kellymom.com. It suppose to work faster than the nystatin. How much are you using? Maybe she really is sensitive to the taste of it. But you really only need to swab enough just to coat it. Are you still breastfeeding? Because the yeast can grow on the breast too. If not, be sure that you are diligent in sterilizing everything before letting her put things back in her mouth.

BTW, gentian violet can stain, but what's a blue smile for a couple of days compared to the gagging torture several times a day.

If I remember correctly I made a paste of baking soda and applied it to my son's mouth. It has been 18 years so I may not be entirely correct so check that alternative out with the internet or your doctor! Good Luck!!

My baby had thrush as a newborn. It was horrible. Then I got it when I was nursing, and I had to take medication for it myself. We just kept passing it back and fourth to each other. It went on for weeks! My advice is that you do not stop the meds. It was so painful to nurse with thrush on you nipples, you have no idea. If you are nursing, make sure you clean yourself after every feeding and change your nursing pads after every feeding until it clears up. I used a mixture of pro-biotics and water to clean myself after every feeding and it finally cleared up! Keep with the meds and look for alternatives to prevent, it may come back! It is very hard to get rid of if not treated properly.
