My baby has had thrush for 2 weeks now from, what I think was the Amoxicillan for an ear infection. He has been on medicine for the Thrush for two weeks and I just called the Dr. today again. He is putting him on another dose and this time wants me to put into a cup and use Q-tip to put on areas where thrush is. Any one know how long until this stuff clears up?
I took him to the dr's for his 6 mo. check up and she gave me a prescription for something really strong. I cannot remember the name of it but it was a three day prescription and it cleared up almost immediatly. I also threw out all of his nuks and bottle nipples and replaced with new ones. It has not come back since. P.S. the dr. said she didn't know why the previous dr. gave my son a second dose of the same medicine, he should have just been put on the strong stuff once the first dose didn't work.
My daughter had Thrush the first week she was born. The doctor prescribed medicine drops which I didn't use on a regular basis but it cleared up in about a month. So if you use the medicine as prescribed, it should definitely be gone before a month is up.
If you are breastfeeding your baby AND you need to be treated. You would use a yeast infection treatment cream on your nipples--need to wash it off befor nursing. You also need to sterilize everything that goes into your baby's mouth daily, and if you use a breast pump, that should be sterilized daily. After the infection is cleared, you should throw away pacifiers and bottle nipples to get new ones.
If you aren't breastfeeding...still follow the sterilization rules...but I've always heard that using genation violet in the baby's mouth is the best treatment. Messy since it is a dye, but effective.

my son had thrush until he was almost six months old the stuff is hard to get rid of. he would have it in one area and we would get that cleared up. then it would show up else were the medication really didnt help much for him. it didnt really go away until I put baby orajel on his gums for teething. but I would not recomend that for yours since it burns. I did it once and never did it again after I relized it hurt him.
It can last a long time and the meds may not work. It did not work for my tiwns. I finally had to claen their mouth out with a rag after every feeding and give them some water to rid them of any leftover formula and breastmilk. It is a yeast infection in the mouth and any leftover sugars will make it stay.It is painful for them so continue the meds but also try cleaning his mouth out after every feeding.
My baby had thrush for two full months. Me and my baby just kept passing it back and forth since I was breastfeeding her at the time. She was put on liquid Nystatin for the mouth and then I was put on cream Nystatin....OH!! and try to stay away from giving him any more antibiotics (obviously)...this can make the thrush worse. The Gentian Violet didn't work at all - just made a huge mess of things. I wouldn't recommend it. Plus the pediatrition said that there were too many side effects and she didn't recommend giving it to babies. One of the most important things is to sterilize EVERYTHING that comes into contact of his mouth (or in your case if you are breastfeeding - in contact of your nipples). Your bras must be washed in super hot water..towels...robes...nursing pads. And make sure to sterilize his teethers, nipples on bottles, binky's, etc....
Well Thrush is very difficult to treat. My son had thrush when he was about 6 months old. The prescriptions didn't work well or fast enough. So the Dr. suggested I use an over the counter old time remedy call Gentian Violet sold in any pharmacy. It's a purple liquid and stains anything it falls on. But it worked great on my son and as far as side affects I'm not sure it does. Since this med. is used to treat mouth injuries. I applyed it with a Q-tip. Just a small dab on the tongue every other day for about a week will do the trick. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it made his lips and fingers from sucking them purple too. This purple liquid causes it to dry up. Just ask your Dr. first about this method. Good luck.

My oldest son had thrush when he was a baby. The doctor said it was from his bottle. I had the same problem and I ended up using a Qtip to put it on his tongue. As long as you put it on when you are supposed to, it should take about a good week.
Don't get discouraged, it will run its course and then it will disappear. You think the medicine is not working, but it is.

My son had Thrush when he was six months old, nothing seemed to work.... My GREAT Grandmother suggested that I try Plain Yogurt and it worked! It was gone in two-three days... all I did was give him a little bit on a baby spoon, no more than a table spoon three times a day! Good luck!
My Daughter had thrush so bad at 4 weeks we took her to peds an what she gave didn't work. when she stopped eating i took her to childrens and they gave me meds for her x3 a day plus taking a soft rag and wipe her tongue and gums after every meal. it took about a mouth for it to be completly gone it was something in liq form and i believe called Nystain*mighted be misspelled* it worked great though. after 3 days she was back to her old self.you have to make sure after every meal you wash his bottles in hot water, all binkies, teethers anything his mouth touches it will come right back. that might be your problem why it isn't clearing up.

Great advice!! The Nystatin kills the yeast overgrowth in the entire body.
I would also add that anytime you are using an antibiotic it should be followed with a course of probiotics to replace the good bacteria in the gut that was wiped out by the antibiotic. These are available at Whole Foods and other health stores and are totally safe to give to babies. In fact, there are several just for babies. The probiotics in plain yogurt would be why the great-granma's remedy worked also. (different post)
