my 19 month old had a busy weekend. He climbed out of his crib for the first time and he's taking off his diaper. I'm raising him by myself how do I train him for the potty and when do I move him to a toddler bed?

What can I do next?

Both my kids were trained by 2 so he is ready for potty training and sieze the moment! Get a potty and put him on it often, I even read a book when they were on it until they peed. I believe the earlier the better.

I sleep with my kids so I can't help with the bed question.

As soon as he can start climbing out, you should move him. The timing varies for everyone. My older child moved at 12 months, my 24 month old son is still in his crib. If you have a convertible crib, you can just take off one side and use it as a toddler bed. Otherwise, I would suggest you let him help pick out his new bed, or at least the sheets and blankets. I ended up buying a bed at IKEA because they had one that could be short for a toddler and then grow as they get older. It was also very low to the ground so I didn't worry about him falling out. Be sure to get some bed guards so that you don't worry about him falling when he is in the bed.

As far as the diaper, unless he shows interest in the potty, I would not start training yet. You can put a potty seat in the bathroom and offer it but he might not care yet. I was planning on starting my son agressively around 27 months although he does sit on it occasionally now. My daughter was trained at 2 1/2 years. If he continues to take off his diaper, make sure he is being changed frequently and he is not taking it off because it is dirty and he doesn't like it on. I would also suggest putting him in a onesie so he can't get to it. Good luck.

My daughter is almost 20 months, I have had her in a toddler bed since age 1 (12 months). I have not however started potty training...My son who is 3 just completed the potty training process and he has been in a toddler bed since about 12-15 months. I think it depends on how well your child sleeps and if they have shown signs of being ready to go on the potty...Hope this was helpful.

Some people try to potty train their babies around this age, but all the research I've done says that a child isn't really developmentally ready to start using the potty until they are around 2 1/2-3 years old. i've heard that you could get used to a child's cycle and place them on the potty when you know that it's time, but starting ths early could mean alot of accidents and a longer training time. I have a 22 month old who also likes to take off her diaper when she has no clothes on, but I think babies just like being naked!

Maybe you can move him to a bed so he doesn't hurt himself, but he still seems a bit too young. Hell just keep getting out of it and playing with toys! I've seen these things called crib nets that are supposed to keep them inside, but I've never used one. Good luck...

Hi, J.! my name is D.. I have 3 boys and I'm still working with the potty training. But for the bed, here we go. As soon as my sons started climbing out, i moved them the safety of a toddler bed. Because climbing means falling. Even though we don't want them to hurt themselves, i think it will be better if they fall from bed about 5 or 6 inches from the floor. That is better than from the height of a crib railing. If your crib is convertable, that even better. they still have comfort of their crib and the safety of not seriously hurting themselves.
I hope this helps.

I've read that as soon as they can climb out, it's time for a toddler bed (but then I've never heard of a crib tent). But if your crib doesn't convert, you can test it with putting his mattress on the floor. Just make sure his room isn't too enticing (with toys) or he'll get up and play. Also, make sure it's all baby-proofed and that he can't get out of the room.

There is a different kind of potty-training that can be used with kids from the time they're 6 months old (although I wouldn't try it because it robs the child of the experience of potty-training when they're old enough to feel pride at being a big boy or girl). You let the kid run around diaper-less, and then when they start to pee, you rush them to the sink or toilet. You also hold them over the sink or tiolet every so often and say "pssssss" to get them to urinate. Weird, huh?

I think the main concern with the crib is that he is safe - if you are not ready they sell crib tents so he can't get out.....I did move my daughter to a queen size bed at age 20 months and it worked out pretty well. So maybe put the toddler bed in his rooom and let him get used to the idea. But you just want to make sure he doesn't get hurt.

19 months is young for potty training! If he doesn't seem ready you don't want to push him.

My daughter started sleeping in a bed by herself at about 18 months but instead of buying a toddler bed I just put the mattress on the floor until she got use to the height and moved up to the twin bed when she stopped rolling off the mattress. Potty training because I didnt want to buy diapers for three but I am any way I started when she was 15 months but she is 2 and still not caring about the potty unless the has to poop but I would start and see if would like the potty instead of a wet diaper. my daughter is just jealous I thionk because I am changing someone elses diaper and she wants me to change hers too.

I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter. As far as potty training, I found that you have to go at their pace. Ayla started sitting on the potty and going (most of the time) about 18 months. She did not change from pull-ups to underpants until she was about 26 months (again her choice). She was having a few accidents here and there in her pullups and wanted to wear underpants, so we had a chat about being a big girl and wearing underpants. She has only had 2 or 3 accidnets total since that time. For the crib... she never climed out of hers - ever. We got her a toddler bed for Christmas this year and she is doing fine in it.
