My 6 yo has just been diagnosed with reflux (runs on both sides of my family) and has to take prescription Zantac for the next 30 days (along with some dietary changes). Tonight was the first time to take it and she took one taste and absolutely refused to finish it. I tasted it and to be honest, I don't think I could take it either...YUCK! So do any of you super smart mamas have any tips for getting it down her or just making it taste better? Its already "mint" flavored. YUCK!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I called the Pharmacy and just asked if I could bring it back and have them add the flavor. I was afraid that since we had already taken it home that they wouldnt...but they will. Thank you for your answers.

You'd have to pay but pharmacies will add a flavoring to the medicine, vanilla, chocolate or bubblegum would go good with the mint. But since you already have the Zantac...

1) Buy some Yo Gabba Gabba! Medicine-time Flavor Spray, made to coat a child’s tongue and mouth with special sugar-free, dye-free sweetening enhancers in Dazzleberry flavor. By covering the tastebuds of the tongue, it helps mask the bitter taste of medications. You spray the product in her mouth before giving the Zantac and then again after. (I'VE tried it, it works!) And it's made by the people who make the flavoring that pharmacies use. You can order it on Amazon:

2) Give your daughter a popsicle before giving the Zantac, they make mini ones now that are the slow-melt kind and the perfect size for this to help numb her taste buds and make it easier to take her medicine.

OR
3) Give her a piece of strong peppermint gum to chew before giving the Zantac. This will help disguise the taste. If you don't want her to have gum, say before bed, have her hold a piece of mint gum or a strong mint (that maybe you'll let her eat afterwards) under her nose as you give the Zantac. I know, it sounds crazy, but as we know the smell of medicine (antibiotics come to mind) can actually make it taste worse so this may help.

I have reflux and hope this helps and that she feels better soon!

I know EXACTLY what you mean! We had the same issue. The Zantac naturally comes flavored mint, and it tastes HORRIBLE!!! We paid the extra $3 each time to have them flavor it GRAPE. I had to remind them each and every time we got it refilled, but it was so worth it. It masked the mint almost completely, then our daughter had no problem taking it.

Have her eat some Cheetos, right after.

I swear, this worked for my son... who is SUPER picky and had to take liquid medicine for his cold once. He had to take Amoxicillan.
This was our Pediatrician's suggestion.
Cheetos, cuts the taste of the syrup, right away.
Using Cheerios, worked for my son. And then he did not FIGHT to take his medicine.

Maybe try that.

When my son was a baby he took Zantac and his dr said put a little bit of honey or corn syrup in to sweeten it a little.

I know the feeling here. My suggestions are to ask the pharmacy to flavor it. I use Kroger and they are so good about telling me which flavor is best for the kind of medication my very picky boys are taking. Next, see if it can be refrigerated. Some medication is just better colder. I have also been told by a pharmacist to try adding chocolate syrup to some medication to help the taste. It is hard at 6 months! I have used all three at different times with good results.
