Hi I am looking for some advice as to what would be a good age to put my son in his toddler bed. He is 19 months and currently sleeping in his crib in my room. He has a bed and its set up in his room but we haven't began the transition. I would grately appriciate any and all advice.

What can I do next?

Well my son was about 15 months when i put him in his toddler bed..He never tried to get out of it or anything when i put him to bed and now he will be 2 in may and still sleeps in his bed and doesnt get out unless hes getting up in the morning or gets up from his nap.. but i think it would be fine to put him in a toddler bed now i believe hes old enough.

I'd keep him in crib til he either gets out or until you think he is ready or if he has a cibling on the way. My little guy is 26 months and he's still in crib. It's funny he's a real climber, but hasn't shown interest in leaving his crib yet. Here I say that now so he'll probabbly do that tomorrow right? Honestly I don't think most 19 month olds are ready for the transision. If there is another child on the way then you should switch him starting 3 months before the baby is due. I think I read that somewhere anyway. You must child proof his room and use a gate so he's safe. Good luck.

Hey S., I had to put my son in a toddler bed at 10 months the little turkey would climb out and I was afraid he would brake his neck. So I put him in a nice toddler bed with the side rails. And I put a baby gate at his room he would not go to sleep with the door closed and I felt better that he would not be getting out of his room when I was sleeping. Don't know if that will help at all good luck M.

you first have to move him to his room....then when he shows an interest in the toddler bed put him in for naps when he wants to sleep in it or when he can crawl outta the crib - its time

we did that with all three of my boys...gave t hem the choice but we always asked
sometimes they stayed int he toddler bed for 10 min
whatever - no pressure and it all worked out fine.....

your first step is to move the crib to his own room
good luck!

We made the transition when our son was suddenly able to climb out of his crib on his own. It really depends on the child, as to when the change should be made. In your case, I would start by moving his crib into his room, and letting him get used to the idea of sleeping in the room, before having the new bed to deal with too. Then, when you think he is used to it, give it a try in the toddler bed. You might want to consider placing a baby gate at the doorway to his room, at first, after the switch to the toddler bed. This will give you the added peace of mind of knowing that he isn't going to get up and wander through the house while you're asleep, keeping him safer from whatever of the many things that a young one can find to get into when we can't be over their shoulder.

dont take him out of the crib until he climbs out on his own. he is safe in his crib and you know where he is. he might be the kind of kid that stays in a crib until he is 2 1/2 or 3 year old. Once he is in a bed he can roam the house..

Wait, Wait, Wait......I have a 23 month old boy and we don't plan on having him in an toddler bed until he is at leat 3 years old. Maybe move his crib and him into his own room for a transition. The best baby accessory I bought myself, was my TV monitor. I got it at KMART and it cost about $90.00. This helped him sleep thru the night a lot sooner because we were not going in his room every time he made a noise. We have had it since he was 4 months old. You could actually see what he was doing without disturbing his sleep. But definetly wait on the bed. My little guy flops around like a fish out of water when he is asleep, the last thing I need to worry about is him falling out of bed. Good Luck!!!

Hi S.! My son is 27 months and I just started putting him in the toddler bed. Most doctors will tell you that with boys wait till after their second birthday. I have also read this in a lot of baby books. To get him used to it, if he takes naps, let him nap in there. That way you and him both get used to the idea of him sleeping in a "big boy bed". Start the transition slow. Good Luck!

Hi S.,
I would wait until he is jumping out of his crib or shows interest in sleeping in his toddler bed. My son was just over 2 when he started jumping out of his crib. We then put up his toddler bed and was so excited he got to sleep in his new bed. Don't force it on him. Wait until he is ready. Good luck.

Unless he is climbing out of his crib, I wouldn't stress about it until he is 3. Do whatever works for you, but I would move his crib into his own room. This will make the transition to bed alot easier whenever you do it. I just moved my daughter to a bed and she was just over 2 1/2.

My dtr just moved into a big girl bed at 3yo. I thought I would never get her out of the crib. She loved her crib and would still be in it if I didn't push her. The good thing about the crib is nap time. Once they get into a bed you may have the battle of them getting up and down during naps and bedtime. At least in the crib they are confined. You may want to start out by moving his crib into his own bedroom first so he gets accustomed to is new room and sleeping alone. Then transistion him to the bed. We did that with my dtr and it really helped. Good luck to you!

The pedeatrician told me to move my kids to toddler beds with siderails as soon as they started trying to climb the crib, that way they can't hurt themselves. fifteen to eighteen months has been about the average in my experiences, but I've heard of parents keeping kids in the crib until they're two. It really depends on the child and his or her abilities and your comfort zone.

I would say that whenever you feel like he's ready. I had my daughter in her toddler bed when she turned 2 and we only waited cuz we weer in the process of building a house. We would have switched her much sooner, but that's because she was climbing out of her crib since she was 4 months old. By 1 year old, we had the matress all the way down and she could still get out. But we were in a small place so we didn't have the room to convert her crib to the toddler bed.
I would give it a shot and see how he does. Good luck.
