Toddler Toddler Bed?

I was wondering when other Mommas moved their toddler from the crib to a toddler bed? We have a very active 19 month old little girl, whom is NOT ready right now for her toddler bed, but I like to plan ahead. I know she will be potty training soon (last night she sat on the potty for five minutes waiting for peepee - she led me into the bathroom saying "potty potty" so I think it may be soon) and I know she'll need to be able to get up and use the potty at night. Soooo, the million dollar question is when do I make the transition? I don't want two new things at once (toddler bed and potty)so I'm wondering what other Moms did.

Our son was extremely active (walked at 9.5 months and climbed out of his crib at 15 months). We put him in a bed at 16 months. Within a month, he was totally used to it. Just buy a nice gate that latches for the bedroom door...

We moved our son at 20 months to a big boy bed (we just used our futon couch, unfolded. Why bother with a toddler bed when we have a perfectly good one already?) You can just childproof her room and put a gate at the door to keep her "contained". My son did beautifully with the transition. We made a big deal about the whole thing (about what a big boy he was, etc) and he got to help us dismantle the crib a day or two later.

FWIW, my son potty trained around 28 months and it took us only a few days before it clicked and he "got" it. I'd be surprised if your daughter trains this early - most kids don't learn to use the potty until they're at least 2. My son sat on the potty once or twice a day for months before being ready to make the leap. Good luck and good for you for thinking ahead!

My daughter climbed over the top railing of her crib before she turned two on Thanksgiving. She had never shown that she was even trying to lift her leg over the railing. Susequently, she broke her left arm in two places. She also landed on a thickly carpeted room, not wood floors. Just food for thought. Probably do it before you think she's ready.

We took the crib rail down and with the mattress at its lowest level we taught the kids how to stay in bed and how to get up to use the potty. For my daughter it was 18 mos, but earlier (15 mos) for my son since he was climbing out. I think it is easier to do one thing at a time and it will help with potty training if they already can get up by themselves -esp in the am.

I moved my son to a toddler bed at 18 months. He has a new sister on the way, so I wanted him out of the crib in time so the baby can use it. We never had a problem switching him to his toddler bed. I was worried he would get out of it all night long, but he never got out of it, even first thing in the morning, he would sit there and talk to himself until I went in to get him. Now at 22 months old, he has only climbed out in the middle of the night just a handful of times. He LOVES his big boy bed! I am pleased we switched him when we did. He was also a very active little boy and adjusted much better than I could have expected!

I have never done toddler beds because they outgrow them so quickly. My daughter moved into a twin sized bed at 16 months and my son moved into a twin sized bed at 17 months. Both were potty trained before their second birthday. I did both things at once and it worked out fine. Potty training is a process at that age, it doesn't happen overnight, but is well worth the work to get it done. Good luck.

I know she is telling you she wants to go potty and stuff but trust me she isn't ready. It is a phase. I think you can potty train at this age but it's grueling. It takes a lot longer and it is frustrating because they have accidents a lot. All my children showed a bit of interest at this age. They are just starting to become aware. So I suggest continue to talk about it, put her on the potty every chance you get, especially while changing her diaper so the connection is made. I would take off the soiled diaper, put them on the potty and then put a diaper on them. I didn't push if they didn't want to I didn't care it was very lax. They stayed in diapers until they were totally ready starting at 2 1/2 to 3. The two that I thought they were ready at 18 months was very difficult. The last two I waited and did as I suggested and they were potty trained within two days. No diaper at night either. I put all my kids into a big boy/girl bed at age 2. That was the perfect age. Definitely do the bed transition first and after they have become comfortable (like they never had a crib) I would then think about potty training.
