We went straight from crib to twin bed. We put the crib mattress on the floor for a while with the second one. I guess you have to decide if the pros of a toddler bed are worth spending the extra money.
Hello
I have been reading all over the internet about other moms dilema of choosing a toddler bed or twin when switching out of crib. I can see each view point and pros and cons. Here is where I stand.... Please help with your opinion.
My DD -21 mos-does not climb out yet. She is somewhat active in her crib...moving around in different positions.
TODDLER BED PROS: We can use our crib mattress and sheets, inexpensive (buying used( she wouldn't fall far onto our wood floors. It won't take up much space in her 12x 10 room therefore, allow for play. CONS- Short term use or not? How long would we use it?
Twin bed PROS - I have the cutest bedding. CONS- More money, more height to fall down, takes up more space in room
Knowing a twin could be the best bet, it'd make sense to go with that..but in a small room 1930s bungalow? If we have another child, we may only last in this house 2-3 more years. Oh, and I want an iron bedframe/vintage like..wouldn't that be too dangerous for her body parts? What do you think overall?
I am posting this later than my your responses. Thank you for all of them. I have decided to wait and get a twin bed vs toddler bed since she is doing so well in her crib. Now I am just researching all the trundle beds and costs, mattresses etc. So, If you have any advice for that, I am all ears!

I did both with my kids... and I was much happier when I went from Crib to Twin bed. both kids slept better in a larger bed and I actually layed pillows on the floor in fear of the falling out of bed thought. I think some twin beds you can get a guard rail attachment. Placing the twin bed up against a wall will also allow the bed to take up less room space. Some beds you can get drawers in the bottom so then there is no need for a dresser in the room - which frees up space. It's really a personal choice... but we found the twin bed to be the smart way to go.. Toddler beds don't offer the comfort support that a twin can offer.
Hope that helps..

When we had to make that choice we went for the toddler bed. My son is now 4 and is still using it. theony thing extra we did was put up oe of thoses net frame that attches under the mattress so he would'nt fall out. I'm thinig this bed (a captains bed) will last for another year or so. Maybe when he is six we'll get him a bed that matches his superhero room.
I think you can get guard rails for your twin that go between the top and bottome mattress. Someone like one step ahead.com or babies rus may have them. good luck.
We started out daughter out by putting the twin mattress on the floor. She got used to it and if she fell, it was not really where she could get hurt. After she was used to it and told us she was ready, we put it on the frame. We intend to do bunk beds eventually and didn't want to buy 2 different mattresses and moved her a couple months before our son was born so we needed the crib mattress for him.
A twin bed will fit just fine in a bungalow bedroom...go with the twin. When you go to sell your house having a bigger bed in there will let the buyers visualize the space better with a real bed in it. The room will seem much smaller with a toddler bed.
A vintage bed should be fine, just make sure there are guard rails on it to keep her in. And its perfectly OK to switch now or when it suits you.

Hi D.! First off--we live in the same neighborhood...I met you at the park last year with my friend who had her baby at the same time you did. Anyway, my son climbed out of his crib right before I had my second baby and I panicked! After much thought, we went with the twin mattress and box spring on the floor in the corner of his 10 x 12 room. It looks cute, kind of like a day bed. I got decent sheets at TJMaxx for the time being, since I was caught off guard by the whole transition and was due any day. I did not buy a day bed because he is such a climber and I wanted to keep it simple, and lower to the ground. He has never fallen out. We had a clean, firm dog bed on the floor next to the bed for a few weeks and now he just has the carpet and pad in case he rolls out. I recommend the twin because several of my friends said that their kids outgrew their toddler beds pretty quickly. Plus the cheaper ones were not so cute. However, if your daughter is not climbing out, I would not move her yet. As soon as he climbed out he was over the crib completely. He takes a lot longer to calm himself to sleep now and explores his stuff, etc until he is ready (which is sometimes too late!) Also, he then reached the light switch--we had to take the bulbs out of the overhead). Wait until she is ready to move into a bed. It does not matter if she is all over the place in the crib. Hope to see you at the park one of these days!
