My daughter who is 16 months old just fell face first into the kitchen tile. Her gums between her front teeth (frenum?) is swollen and wedged between her two front teeth. What do I do? Let the swelling go down and hope it dislodges itself? Try to pull it out? Take her to the urgent care center? Dentist?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the advice. I took her in to see her pedi the next day b/c the swelling hadn't gone down at all. All looked well and now the swelling is gone!

This happened to my son around the same age and he was bleeding. I gave him half of a pedialyte pop to suck on (all I had) and the bleeding and swelling went done. I can him the other half of the pop about 30 minutes later and eventually all the swelling went down on its own. Hope this helps!

It most likely just looks like it's wedged in there. The gums tend to look like that when they swell. Give her some generic tylenol (love the recalls!) and try an ice pack wrapped in a washcloth. See how it looks in the am then make a decision about what to do. There is a great pediatric dentist on 54 near the Suncoast-http://www.suncoastpedo.com/Meet-Dr-Amanda.html

My hubby went to school with her at UF and has seen her work. She also gets rave reviews in my mom's group.

Guess I need to change my location lol!

Give her popsickle to help with the swelling and some infants tylonal/motrin. If you can't dislodge it, you may need to take her to an urgent care clinic; you wouldn't want the tissue to rip and bleed. If it stays like that, I'd think it will get in the way of eating, crying and talking, potentially rip more.

(my daughter fell face forward around 20 months and knocked her front tooth catty-wompus. The pediatric dentist didn't want too see her for a few week--plus he didn't have an opening. If you take her anywhere, I think an urgent care clinic will probably see you sooner.

I agreee, she should see a pediatric dentist. My child had a similar problem at 2 1/2 years old and I took her to the dentist right away. Sometimes there can be injuries to the teeth that you don't notice.

Did you put ice on it? That would have been my first step. Then if the swelling doesn't take her in to see the dentist. Also you can give her something for pain if she is hurting.

My son fell at about this age too (now 10!) We took him to youthcare - waited hours only to be given tylenol and told to see a dentist to get an x-ray to make sure the teeth were not affected!
Popsicle is a great idea for the swelling. See a peads dentist if they can get you in "today" - if not it should resolve it's self on it's own. If the teeth change color - see the dentist - they usually have to pull them out as they are then dead. My son lost 1 this way - he was fine - had the gap in all his school photos until the permanent teeth came in!

I took my youngest to the dentist when he fell at age 18 months and it made his front teeth loose. Don't wait call a ped dentist tomorrow morning if you have other children call the one they go to tonight, let him.her know what's happened if they take after hours calls and I'm sure he/she will tell you to come in the morning so they can work you in. The urgent care might not be able to help much and if there's a an accident that needs a dentist they just refer you, so I don't know that I'd waste my money on the urgent care. Anything cold tonight and tylenol or motrin follow the package dose orders.

I feel for you! My daughter recently had a similar accident. I would take her to the dentist just so they can take a look and make sure everything looks ok. Hope she feels better soon!

take her to a pediatric dentist - this just happened to my 9 month old - scary but probably nothing - best to let a professional tell you that though :o)
