Toddler Has Fungus in His Mouth

Hello,
It might be known as thrush, but our pediatrician did not clal it that. She just said my son had a fungus in his mouth that cuases him his bad breath (Dignosis of that bad breath was post nasal drip for the last year - go figure). It looks like little white flakes inside his cheeks.
She prescibed antibitics to drip in the mouth. I rather try something else before I jump on anitbitics. Someone recomended Primadophilus for 0-5 year olds.
Before I buy that I would like to hear, if anybody has any experience with that product?
I make him eat a lot of probiotics at this time, but that probably will not cure the whole fungus.
Any suggestions?
Thanks ladies and happy weekend!!!

So What Happened?

LADIES,
THANK YOU to everybody who took the time to respond.
I think I have this taken care off. The inner cheeks look fine again and the breath is much better too.
This is what I did: When going to the health store to look for the Primadophilus the customer service there said that product has something in it that will actually feed the fungus. She recommended Florajen4Kids. 30 caps are about 16 bucks. So every day he got a capsule of that, I made them eat plain yoghurt with some honey or they would not give in. Offered the Probiotic little drink yoghurt and swapped their cheeks 4-5 times a day with baking soda. That recommendation made actually good sense to me. On top of that I took a very close look at their diet, cut the candy out as much as possible and made them eat lots of fresh veggies.
I think this combination did the trick.
I am blessed that my kids hardly get sick, so we only go the doc for the annual check up. So I won't run back there and argue about the medication. Secondly doctors are not 'know it alls', for those who questioned why I do not trust the doc on the medication prescribed. I believe you know your kids better than anybody else and the antibiotics would have killed the good bacteria as well and then building up teh immune system, we might have faced new challenges.
I am really thankful for all your responses and glad that we made it though this the 'natural' way/
Happy Holidays!

You should be questioning why an antibiotic is being prescribed for a fungus. Antibiotics are for bacteria, not for a fungus. My pediatric dentist is very knowledgeable and can probably help. Dr. Matt at Kids First Pediatric Dentistry in Elgin. Good Luck.

If it really is fungus an antibiotic will only make it worse, not better- antibiotics can cause fungus, I would absolutely do a probiotic but if it's really bad he would need an anti-fungal, which I would save as a very last resort. There is a natural remedy called gentian violet, really messy, but effective. If it truly is a fungus and your ped prescribed an antibiotic, I would get a new doctor.

I like FloraBaby by Renew Life, it has about 10 different strains of good bacteria and it is a good company. I would also consider eliminating dairy until it is cleared up, it may be hard, but you can safely replace cow's milk with a rice milk. Cheapest place is Trader Joe's, 1/2 gallon for $1.99. You will need to continue the probiotics about 3m after he is finished with the probiotics, but we give it daily in our household, like a multivitamin.

here is some more info on the benefits of probioitcs in my family health column:

If you are giving him probiotics such as in yogurt that does not work. Omit all dairy products they promote fungus and primadolphilus is a good reputable brand. As are New Chapter, NSI and american health. go to vitacost.com for some great savings.

I would triple the recommended amount because it can not harm the body at all.

If you have more questions please let me know.

I'm a young mother to a 2 year old and a baby girl due any day, I'm also a daughter to a mother of 6 children who had to use home remidies. Resently my older sister had a baby girl and she came down with this thrush infection, my mother suggested swabing her moth out with vinigar a few times a day for a few days and as far as I know she didn't need to get an antibiotic from a pediatricn. I have not personaly tryed this but it worked for someone so it might be worth looking in to. Best of luck.

Yes, the antii-biotics is just a band aid to a systemic problem. It doesn't get to the root of the cause.
Nip it in the butt as early as you can because it will just create havac in his life as he gets older
The anti-biotic will exasterbate it as well.
Stay away from things that feed it like white flour, sugars, things that are fermented ( like vinegars) and most condiments. Acidophilous will balance the bacterias and help his colon ( which is what causes bad breath) Show me someone with bad breath and I'll show you a colon that isn't too clean.

Gentian Violet is a very good natural remedy for Thrush, but a lot of people don't like to use it because it stains and makes the mouth purple/blue for like a week.

I know of 2 alternatives. A teaspoon of baking soda in some water & take a q-tip & swab the inside jaw 4 to 5 times a day. Should clear up in less than 48 hours. The second, is milk of magnesia. Swab inside of jaw twice a day should clear it fast also. The 1st method was given by La Leche(breastfeeding support organization). Hope this helps.

My question - is why is your doctor giving you an antibiotic for fungus?? Why didn't she give you an antifungal (Nystatin, Diflucan etc.)? Antibiotics won't work on the thrush. I agree with your approach. I've heard that Florastor is good, or Jarrow probiotics.

sorry i didnt read your whole response. are you putting the probiotics in his mouth to chew? I would verify exactly what he has as antibiotics for a fungus instead of an antifungal makes me think there is something else going on. Tell her you arent comfortable witht he antibiotics and if there is another way. I heard something about doctors prescribing antibiotics to appease parents when in the end a lot of stuff can be cured without them. Just let your doc know you arent one of those parents

yes you can use a powdered probiotic (same stuff in yogurt but in a higher concentration ) most likely your child was on antibiotics at some point which killed all of his "friendly" flora (a fancy word for good bacteria)so instead of there being this good bacteria to eat the yeast in your body, the antibiotics killed it leaving the yeast to have a great party! the probiotics will reestablish a colony and get your son in balance. Why your doc didnt prescribe an anti fungal I do not know since the antibiotics are going to get you in a worse situation! you canfind great ones at whole fooods, or CVS sells a brand called CULTURELLE that is better than nothing. Make sure though that you place it directly in the mouth (doesnt taste bad) or mix it into applesauce, yogurt or juice (has no taste but you can see it in water) good luck!

Hi A. why don't you use the antibotic his pediatrican told you to use? After all he/she is the professional and knows exactly what to give him. With children this young you shouldn't be experimenting on them. If you just feel that you want to try Primadophilus, ask is pediatrican is it okay .
