Hi Moms,

For those of you who have a type 1 diabetic toddler…what were the signs/symptoms that led to the diagnose?

Thanks.

What can I do next?

Hi J.,
My daughter was diagnosed when she was 19 months and my son was diagnosed at age 6. Both of them had extreme thirst and very frequent urination.
My very active daughter would lay down in the middle of playing to take a rest.....it was a HUGE red flag that something was wrong. She was also very hungry all the time.

If you have any concerns, go directly to the doctor. They will do a blood draw and a urine test.

One of the girls I work with has a daughter who was diagnosed this year at 2 yrs old. When she looked back, she realized her daughter had been extremely thirsty and wetting tons of diapers. She got really sick & went in, then found out that her sugar was through the roof. She just got a pump and they're adjusting to that and doing well.
good luck!

the signs for diabetes are extreme thirst, increased urination, extreme hunger, weight loss even though always hungry, fatigue, and blurred vision. The symptoms usually come on suddenly. If your little one has any of them you should call your ped. If you suspect diabetes and your pediatrician won't test then in my opinion its time for a new pediatrician. Mine will run a test if I ask even if he doesn't think my children have something just to help put my mind at ease. I have never asked for something crazy. My oldest recently had blood work done to check to see his thyroid and anemia because he was extremely tired came back fine but our ped had no problem ordering the labs.

I don't have any direct experience, but a friend who's grandson was diagnosed at 6 months highly recommended this website for info:
