ok..so I'm trying to train my girl to sleep in her crib (in our bedroom) whenever her father is NOT around. He doesn't want to hear her cry, and if she does cry he would like me to pick her up at the first squeak. But, he is ok with me letting her cry it out when he's not around as long as he doesn't have to hear her go through such pain. Two weeks into this training now, and she knows the crib is to sleep, and she still fights it, but after 1/2 hr. she falls asleep as long as she knows I'm hovering over the crib. How do I teach her to sleep on her own during the night when our bed is right next to her crib? My husband is opposed to moving the crib elsewhere, and so far she wakes up 3x's a night, and sleeps right after breastfeeding. I can't let her cry it out at night b/c he's around, so..what else can I do?

What can I do next?

What worked for us was getting our son on a schedule we kept religiously. We have dinner, take a bath, read stories, sing songs and say prayers. We do it in the same order at the same time every night. After we say prayers we give him a kiss and say night-night and put him in his crib. He has gotten comfortable with the schedule so he always knows what to expect at night. He is almost 2 and we have done this since he was probably about the age of your little one. The only thing that has changed is that he no longer has a bottle while we read and sing and the time has varied as he has grown. The first few nights may be a little rough, but once you settle in she'll be fine.

My daughter was like that too. What worked for us is letting her sleep in her swing for awhile usually 30 mins and then I put her in her crib. After a few day I didn't need the swing and she slept in her crib through out the night. I hope it works for you.

I think a good consistant bedtime routine, with a bath was so important in teaching my daughter to sleep on her own. We would do bath, pajamas, nurse and then put her in her crib drowsy but awake. We did have to let her cry it out a couple of time but it was the best thing I could have done for both of us. She was so much happier when she was sleeping through the night in her own bed and so was I. Its amazing how much a good night of sleep can change your outlook on life :)

we do a bedtime routine as well. A bath, lotion, comfy Pj's and a warm bottle does the trick for us. My husband and I craddle him between us when he's eating and sing or talk to him. Works every time. Good Luck!

Does she nap in her crib? You could start there... Put her in her crib when she is drowsy, not asleep, she may not fall asleep for quite a while, but it's ok to let her play in there. My daughter born 1-2-07 mostly falls asleep on her own now and sleeps in her crib all night. She used to sleep with us in the early morning hours, which didn't allow me to get much sleep, finally I just left her in her crib after nursing her and she sleeps until morning. (We still get up every 2-3 hours to nurse and she's 9 mos. old... !!!!)

There are lots of reasons she could be waking at night. She could be working on something, teeth, crawling, standing, walking etc. She could be waking because of your sleeping sounds. The list goes on.

Good luck!
