my daughter will be one on the 23rd of this month. she has been drinking only breast milk until 6 mos and now formula for the last 6 mos. Since last week,I have started letting her have a little whole milk. she loves it! should I just start giving her wholemilk all the time or do I have to do it little by little.

What can I do next?

I went straight to whole milk at like 11 months. I breastfed until then. I didn't feel like my little guy was getting anything towards the end, so I tried to supplement with formula, but he wouldn't take. I switched straight to whole milk and had no problems. Do whatever you're comfortable with and whatever works for you.

Just give her the whole milk. I gave up the formula a little early with both of mine-around 11 months. It is so expensive!

It is perfectly fine to give your child whole milk at this age, as long as they are eating and getting all the nutrients they need from their food. We went through the same questions with our grandkids pediatrician.

Ask your pediatrician. Different ones have different views, but ours said there's nothing magical about the 1st birthday, as long as they're close, and they like the taste of whole milk, and it doesn't seem to affect their diapers, go for it. Some babies will have runny diapers for a few days if they're put on whole milk too early or too fast. Ours turned 1 on Dec. 26, and we forgot to bring extra formula to Thanksgiving trips, and I called and asked if he could go to whole milk at 11 mos, and they said he could, but it would best to wait until after the holiday because too many changes at once could affect his tummy as well (different foods, different people & sleeping habits). So some suggest to do it just before the first birthday so they're not having lots of new things all at once (cake, lots of ppl around...etc).

I would say it is fine to start her now. You are close enough to one, but definitely watch her b/c different babies react differently. If she takes fine to it then I wouldn't worry about mixing with formula. Once you start her on whole milk, make sure you start feeding her more solid food too though. Too much milk can make her anemic. I am no expert, but that's what my pediatrician said.

I started my daughter and son both on whole milk cold turkey around 10 months and they did great and loved it! My docotor actually said it would be ok at 9 months. You can try it little by little to get her used to it, but she might just love it so much like my kids did and not want the formula anymore! So I say if she likes it and is doing good on it, go for it!!!! She will be just fine, don't worry! Good luck!

I think that this is a personal choice for each mother. Both of my boys started drinking regular milk when they turned 1 year old. They adjusted fine to it. There was no change in their eating habits, and they never had any kind of stomach issues from the switch. I would say, if she likes it, go ahead and switch because when you go to your one year check up the doctor is going to tell you that it is time to switch to regular milk. A couple of weeks early is not going to hurt anything. Good luck and congrats on the new adition.

You want to give her like 2 ounces of formula and 1 or 2 of whole milk. That way she gets used to the new flavor.

We went straight to whole milk at one. My daughter (now almost 4) was allergic and we didn't realize it at first, so we had to switch to soy. Her allergy manifested as a rash on her cheeks and a really runny nose. My son (17 months) did fine on whole milk from the start. If you've already given her a bit of whole milk and she's been fine, I would think that you are okay to go ahead and switch. Good luck!!!

Oh my gosh!! I would say that's great that she loves it so much and just make the jump! Since the formula does have so much wonderful stuff in it, maybe you could just give her one of those a day until she's technically one (to calm any reservations in your mind). Or 1/4 formula in each cup. Otherwise, once we went for our 1 year appt our pedi just said make the transition over a 3 day period (unless she would do it all at once), it took us about 6 months, though. She wasn't too big on whole milk. So I don't think it should mess with her system if you just make the jump at once, if that's what your asking.

i would do exactly that...transition...mix it somewhat for at least a couple of days...it seems to be easier on the digestive tract, etc. good luck. congrats on being close to done with expensive formula! :)

I did half and half with my son for a couple of days then took away the formula. It will be easier on her tummy.

I think it depends on your child. My son transitioned to milk just fine. My daughter turned 1 last month and I am having to transition her really slowly. If she drinks too much milk (i.e. too much in one day), she throws up or has pains at night. So, I'm only giving her a little bit of milk each day (she is on soy formula).

I would say as long as it agrees with her and she is taking it ok, go ahead and make the switch. I did the switch the same with my son. I ran out of formula one morning, so I gave him a sippy cup with milk in it, and that was it, no more bottles or formula.

I feel that if she is not having any reactions to it, then you can just switch. That is what I do when I weened my 2 little ones from breast milk.

i always did mine with a 1/4 whole to formula/breast milk and gave that about a week. then made it a 1/2, then 3/4 then all. jsut gave them time to adjust. i never had any problems.

I agree with K C! I cold turkey- ed my son the day after his first birthday. No more bottles or formula. Just sippee cups with whole milk. If she likes it and it agress with her, just be glad that this was an easy transition and move on! If you would like to boost the nutrition factor, you could buy some of that stuff in the formula isle that's for toddlers and mix a little of it in, but I wouldn't. It's just something else to have to buy then ween off of later.
