Hi,
I just saw Dr. Rebecca Thibodeau in Chesapeake, off western branch, and really liked her and her office staff. She does accept tricare prime, her number is ###-###-#### and the address is 3802 Poplar Hill Rd. Suite C Chesapeake.
hope this helps and good luck.

Hi Jennifer,
Tricare prime wouldn't let me see a civilian doctor (too bad as I live near VB General and tons of doctors' offices). I think if they have openings in the military facilities, the civilian provider option is out. So rather than drive out to Portsmouth for each prenatal visit, I went to the OB/GYN clinic at Dam Neck. The 3 providers in that office, all women, were extremely kind and knowledgeable (especially Anna Brown). My only complaint is that they don't do the deliveries at PNMC. So I had a total stranger deliver my daughter. Not to say that it's a bad hospital (because we've gone there for other reasons & were perfectly satisfied with the care given), but my birthing experience was terrible at Portsmouth.
Best of health to you during your pregnancy & I hope you're able to find a doctor that you're comfortable with!

I also had Dr. F. Olds. She WAS amazing and i too ran into the same problem. With my third baby what I did was get a civilian doctor that takes Prime and she got me a referral to a OB/GYN in Chesapeake. They were really great and I think they also have a midwife. The group is Greenbrier Ob/Gyn on Volvo Pkway. i hope this helps.

Your main problem here is PRIME. Unless portsmouth is not full and you are not on TRICARE STANDARD you will end up going to portsmouth. You will have to go to the benefits place at Portsmouth to see about trying to get referred civilian.

Blessed Birth Services excepts tricare prime. They are an amazing group of midwives. We used them for the birth of our 6th child in December. If you google Blessed Birth VA they will come up. They have a great website. They do home births. Homebirth is a wonderful safe alternative to the hospital. It is so much more peaceful than the hospital and you do not have to leave your older child over night. We had 3 children at the hospital and 3 at home. The difference is night and day. With midwives you get vastly superior prenatal care and great support through your labor. They will actually be there for the labor unlike any provider you use at the hospital. I highly encourage you to check out this option and to read "Pushed" by Jennifer Block it will probably provide you with a different perspective on what a "safe " birth is in this country.

Hi Jennifer,

Congratulations! YES! You can have a midwife with Tricare! You can switch yourself to Tricare Standard and then go to any civilian midwife who takes it. You can try to stay Prime and get a 'non availability' from them to go out in town but I hear they are hard to come by. If you stay Prime they most likely will want you to go to Portsmouth Naval Hospital for care and delivery. I have heard some very mixed reviews of that place, everything from it was OK to it was horrible. I used the midwives at Depaul for my last birth 2 years ago and they are FABULOUS!!! They are part of a practice called Womancare Centers, ####-###-####. There are 3 midwives and 4 OB's in the practice. If you have Tricare Standard they have you pay the OB fee upfront ( about 2200) and then you file your own insurance paperwork thru the pregnancy and get reimbursed directly from Tricare. I honestly can't say enough good things about the midwives, they are truly caring, smart and amazing. Good luck to you!!

depending on where you live, there was a wonderful Nurse Practitioner out of the OB/GYN at the clinic at Dam Neck Annex. On Tricare Prime, you would have to pay for your care at a civilian doctor unless you are referred out. I'm trying to remember her name. I want to say that her name with Mrs. Brown. I wish I could have stayed with her my whole pregnancy but I had to transfer to NMC Portsmouth for gestational diabetes.
