Trouble Taking Bottle

My 19 week old son has been fussy taking his bottle the last two days and today only drank two six-ounce bottles. I think he may be teething or a sore throat. He does not have a fever and is not fussy otherwise. He is drooling a lot. I plan to call the doctor tomorrow, but wondering if anyone has advice. He is not dehydrated (yet) he still has tears and his diapers have been wet.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

THANK YOU for ALL the GREAT advice. I really love Mamasource! Afterall, we are off to the doctor tomorrow to check his ears since he is now congested. The Tylonel and Orajel helped with feedings, but he is still drinking too little. Thanks again.

I hate to say this; but have you thought about it being Hand, Foot & Mouth disease? It is very common and can sometimes flair up only in the throat (making it harder to detect). This happened to my daughter at about 18 mos. old. She had no sores on the outside of her mouth, her hands or her feet. She (and then I) only had the sores in her throat, which made eating very painful. If that is what it is, there's not much you can do as far as treatment because it is a virus. It will eventually go away on it's own. Good luck!

Hi M.,
I am the Nana of a beautiful baby boy whom I have been raising since birth. He seemed to have some teething issues rather early on. My doctors take on the situation was that the teeth are moving down and he was experiencing some discomfort. I gave him tylenol for the pain sometimes if it really was interfering with his eating. There are also the gel teething rings that you can but in the fridge or freezer. There is also the teething gel for when it really gets bad.
Goof Luck,
N.

I'd say he is teething or has a virus. Giving some baby tylenol couldn't hurt either way.

He might be teething. My oldest would lose her appetite, have the runs, a runny nose, a fever and so on...she was pitiaful.

At 19 months old you could very easily be using a sippy cup instead. Have you tried a cup? I could be wrong but I took the bottle from both of mine between 12 and 15 months. One is five and one is three now and they don't even use a sippy cup anymore unless we are traveling (or they have a nighttime cough and then I might give them a sippy cup with honey water to sooth their throat during the night). The bottle and the sippy cup are bad for the teeth from what I've been told by every dentist we have ever visited.

M. Don't worry about him not drinking alot right now. IF he stop completely then you will have to worry. I just went thru that with a little one I watch & He didn't want to drink his for over a week As long as you are getting food down him Just keep trying the bottle. Yes it could be an ear infection or a sore throat. There are teething tablets out there for his teeth also. They are a life saver.

My so is doing something similiar. He is drooling a lot and when it comes time for his bottles he is hungry but only drinking 4 oz, when normally it is a 6 oz bottle. He also crys in the late afternoon and chews on his hand. As I am a first time momI am not sure if this is normal. We are going to the peditrician next week for his 4 month check up, so I will ask him.

Hi there! Isn't parenting fun?! I would be certain there hasn't been any change in formula or formula type (Ready to feed vs powder- yes they do taste different). And, then, maybe sore ears or throat. He will need more to drink than he has been, of course you know that- or you wouldnt be here..LOL..I would see how it goes today and if he doesnt eat better and there has been no change in bottle of formula, then i would make an MD appointment. You might also try some Tylenol and see if it makes any difference in feeding. Good luck!

your baby needs a minimum of 20 oz a day. perghaps he has an ear infection- I would take him in right away.

My personal opinion, your baby is ok. Since he does not have a fever or any other medical conditions, I believe it is just one of those days. He will eventually start drinking his bottle again.

Although, if this continues, I would suggest giving him Pedialyte in his bottle and call the Doctor and ask the Nurse what he may suggest or to have him call you or make an appoinment. Good Luck and God Bless.

Hi M.,
Is there any chance your son could have an ear infection? I've been told that sometimes when there ear hurts they won't suck on there bottle either. I am a first time mom of an 16 month old. So I understand that I am still learning but I hope this helps.

Chances are he is teething. It happens. Call your doc just to be sure though, but when my son was little he would drink like five bottles one day and then only two the next and then sometimes only one and a half... it all varies. Kind of like how grownups don't eat the same amount of food every day... babies even though they are smaller are just like us... don't worry too much. Teeth are probably coming in. Try cold stuff... pedialite Popsicles work out great! Rub one on his/her teeth... it will numb it and then try feeding the baby.

I agree with the Tylenol. try that and see if it helps - even if it's a sore throat, it will help with that too. If he continues to stay off his bottle (and nothing else has changed, like his formula) I would definitely give the doc a call. but keep in mind, the first teeth to come in are the front ones (whether top or bottom) so it may just be difficult for him to latch on to the nipple and put the required pressure on because he's achey. maybe all that excess saliva is having an appetite curbing affect on him if he's swallowing it. i dont know if there is any basis behind it, but i know when i drink lots of liquids, it makes me less hungry.

good luck with your little man... hope he gets back to good soon, but i don't think it will harm him to have a few days of a low appetite. some days i dont feel as hungry as others, maybe babies go thru this too. (??)
