My son just turned 8 months and in the last couple of days he hasnt wanted to eat or drink anything. If he does drink its not his usual 8 oz its 4 at the most. He has also been running a slight temp and is not being his usual happy self. I want to believe that maybe he is teething and that he hasnt caught something from the daycare. My daughter is 9 years old so I'm a little fuzzy about the details of what happens when, hence the reason I signed on to mamasource. Before I get all in a panic and rush him to the ER I wanted to know what you ladies thought? Is he teething? And if so what should I expect? How does baby-baby get his nourishment if he wont eat or drink?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies for all the advice. I tried to control babys temp with tylenol and motrin the next day I noticed what looked like milk residue on his lip. I took him to the pediatrician to find that he had thrush. Thank God I caught it early because it wasnt bad. He has 2 visible infected areas. The doctor gave him a "mouthwash" antibiotic and he seems to be feeling much better. Needless to say that I have pulled him out of the daycare center he was in, because I believe that was the source of his infection.

My daughter has done the same thing. What I end up having to do is try to give her the bottle more often and feed her more of her fruits and other foods. She seemed to rather eat "real" food versus a bottle. She also likes the teething biscuits and oragel! Another thing I've done is on days that she doesn't eat very well, I make a bottle right before I go to bed and feed it to her while she is still "asleep". I leave her in the crib, just lay her on her back and put it in her mouth. She usually eats more this way. Good luck!

I know the feeling my youngest gets ill and my first responce is to run him dirrectly into ER. I would think about how long this has been happening...if it has only ben a day or two, maybe not feeling well. However if baby does this for a while, make an appointment for ped' doc. IF fever gets above 103 or babe seems to be no responsive take dirrectly to Emergancy care. Ryan ( my youngest) has a seizure disorder and we take him to the childrens hospital in the medical center area ( Methodist the blue and white one) This ER is one of the best for childrens medication and treatment. I hope this is helpful and wish you luck

My oldest child didn't eat well, and the doctor always said not to worry unless she stopped drinking. It sounds like, with the fever and less intake of liquids, you should get him to a doctor. It could be teething, but could very well be some kind of infection. Don't waste time on this. It's better to be overly cautious, than not at all.

just let you know that other things could have caused the Thrush... my baby has it and is seeing the doctor tomorrow.. we noticed white spots in his mouth..

Thrush can affect anyone, though it occurs most often in babies and toddlers, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

What Causes Thrush?

Small amounts of the candida fungus are present in the mouth, digestive tract, and skin of most healthy people and are normally kept in check by other bacteria and microorganisms in the body. However, certain illnesses, stress, or medications can disturb the delicate balance, causing the fungus candida to grow out of control, causing infection.

Medications that upset the balance of microorganisms in the mouth and may cause thrush include corticosteroids, antibiotics, and birth control pills. Illnesses or medical situations that make candida infection more likely to develop include uncontrolled diabetes, HIV infection, cancer, dry mouth, or pregnancy (caused by the hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy). People who smoke or wear dentures that don't fit properly also are at increased risk for thrush. In addition, babies can pass the infection to their mothers during breast-feeding.

I would suspect that the baby has a sore throat, possibly an ear infection. I would not rush the baby to the ER, but I would get him into the doctor soon. I don't think its teething. That wouldn't necessarily curb his appetite, usually they want to chew and suck more when the teeth are coming in. Also, temps (no matter how slight) aren't usually related to teething. My guess (not a nurse or a doctor, just a mom of 2 and a daycare provider) is that he has at least a sore throat and possibly an ear infection. See your pediatrician soon! In the meantime, call the doctor's office, ask for the nurse, and ask what you can do for him for a sore throat (over the counter stuff, popcicles, etc).

Hi S..
Keep an eye on how many wet/soiled diapers your baby is producing. If it has dropped significantly, then schedule a visit to see the Pediatrician. It doesn't take long for a baby to become dehydrated. Usually, a baby will eat/drink when hungry even if they are teething. Place a tiny drop of orajel on the gums before giving a bottle and usually they'll drink. Usually, a temp is an inidication of an infection somewhere; ears, throat, respiratory.
Take Care.

It could be an ear infection. My sister would stop eating and drinking and be fussy when she had an ear infection. My 11 month old does the same we just found out that she has an ear infection and all she did was stop eating and drinking. Give lots of pedialite if he won't drink it from a bottle or cup use a suringe and squirt it in his mouth is what the doc told us. but he needs fluids any way you can get him to take it.

Sounds like teething to me. After this little spell passes, he will eat you out of house and home. Believe me a little Motrin and extra TLC goes A L O N G way.

Low grade temp is a sign that something is wrong. If it persists longer than 3 days, I'd take in for a check. It could be teething, but it could also be an ear or sinus problem. Three days is my limit for any fever.

He might have a sore throat or perhaps the beginnings of an ear infection. I would take him to the doctor as soon
as you can and just have him checked out. Hope he's feeling better soon!

Sorry babies not feeling well.
Could be an ear infection. Does he pull at his ears? If so, take him to the doctor.
Or maybe a stomach virus. Does he gag on his foods? Does he have diareha? The doctor cant do anything for this. You just have to ride it out.
I would give him Tylenol ( store brand works just as well) for the fever. And pedilyte ( again store brand is much cheaper, and you may have to go thru several bottles)you must keep him hydrated. If he's not drinking and he's running a fever he can get dehydrated.
As for teething. He could be cutting a tooth, that could be the cause for fever. But it usually doesnt affect their appetites.
If he doesnt get better in a couple of days or becomes unresponsive i would definately get him to a doctor.
Hope this helps, and i hope baby begins to feel better.Take Care.

S., my daughter is also 8 months old and has zero teeth at the moment. It does sound like your son is teething, so be patient and wait to see what happens. Call the pediatrician's office and they will usually get you on the phone with a nurse OR have the doctor call you back. When you tell them the temperature - if its too high they will tell you to take your son to the ER, and then listen to them! But if they aren't concerned then just relax and let nature take its course. Things to look at: is your baby also extra fussy along with a changed diet and a temperature? Tell all the facts to your pediatrician and they will gear you straight. Sometimes bringing a tiny baby to the ER will get them around more germs and isn't good unless its your last alternative.

I'm sorry to hear that your son is not feeling well. It might be that he is teething , and when you are teething he might run a low grade fever and he is not going to want to eat. try given him some oral gel before he eats see if that helps. If he conutines not to eat you should take him in to the doctor. There is the flu going around town. My newphwes and niece had have the flue within the last weeks. Just monotor him. It wouldn't hurt for you to call the doctor or go in. I hope this help.
