I got off the depo shot about 5 months ago and was only on it for three month period before that. when i stopped i was bleeding off and on, sometimes thick and sometimes thin, but i always had some sort of period. this month I'm actually over due for my period by five days. i have taken two pregnancy tests both negative. i have a very odd spotting going on. it isn't constant. i spot a little one day none the next and so on. nothing seems to effect its consistency. i looked all over the net and the only thing i found was implantation bleeding. i really don't know whats going on. any advice would help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

well after seeing a nurse at the clinic i go to i was told that it was just the depo wearing off. so now that i have just recently came off a month long period the depo should be gone. at least thats what was said. so i guess maybe now i can work on having another baby. and i don't think i'll be getting back on the depo.

Unfortunately that is the results from Depo. I had two doses and it caused so much bleeding that I ended up with a hysterectomy at the age of 28. My friends and I all call it depo poison. It takes a year per shot to get out of your system. There needs to be a lot more warnings put with this shot. It's just horrible!!
Everyone I have talked to that have quit Depo have had abnormal bleeding. I would personally use Arbonne's Prolief to help get your hormones back in balance.
Best of luck. At least you didn't take too many shots so should help your recovery.

They don't tell you that the effects of depo can last over a year after the shot. It can really make a cycle weird, especially if you're already a bit irregular.

I tried the depo shot about 10 years ago. Got it twice. Months and months later, and no period. Finally went to my doc and he actually put me on the pill to get me menstrating again. (It worked, was on the pill for 3 months and then no problems, even conceived 3 months after stopping the pill).

I would go to your doc, rule out any other issue, and then talk about getting things back to normal.

Hi T.,

I'm sorry to hear about the troubles that you have been having. I had 2 friends who got on Depo, the first gained 75lbs in the three months. The other one started over-ovulating and once the shot started to wear-off, she had a light period for over 130 days. I don't think that is ok to have a period for that long, but your doctor probably doesn't have anything to help so he/she just says it's "ok". I would recommend trying some teas or herbs to equalize the hormones. Women's tea is one I used to take to help my period go a little smoother (cramps, mood swings, duration, etc.) Hope that you start feeling better soon:) maybe posting your experience somewhere else on the web might help other women decide not to get on depo too.

Thats acutally pretty crazy, because i was on that shot also for a year and then got off and it took about a year for any periods to come and tehn i was off it for 3 years and got back on it like a year ago, and then got off it again becuase i had no insurance back in May, So i was going through the same thing, having periods for 2 weeks, them being either really thin and then really thick and it was terrible, well this month as well i completely missed my peirod and i went and got a test as well but it said negative, i was told i should have a doctors office test ran instead of a store bought test done, but i personally think its just the shot messing up the body, If you dont get a period by next month i would contact a doctor, becuase this has happened once to me before and the following month i was hit so hard with a peirod. I am here if you want any other advice!

This same thing happened to me and my sister after coming off the depo shot. We both asked our Dr's and they said that sometimes the hormones can still stay in your system for up to a year...sometimes they will be active and sometimes dormant...it's just the hormones working their way out of your system!

Hope this helps!

I was on Depo for 4 years (and then another 6 month stint). Right after I got the shot I started my month and half long period, whihch was very heavy. I went to the doc concerned but he said it was normal. After it ended I did not have another period until I got off of it. Go to the doc if you are concerned, but really, it's the normal results of Depo. :) But TAKE CALCIUM. Depo depeletes your body of it, and you need it!

I know some people do not like it, and truth be told it has not been around long enough for a long term study, which is why I decided to get off of it. However, it was very effective for me and I seem to have suffered no ill effects, while others seem to have hated their whole expirence with it. After I was off of it a year I decided to go back (because I hated the patch) and while the results with my period were the same, I gained 50 lbs, which I was waraned by my doc might happen on a second go around. I got off it after 2 cycles (6 mo) and went tried the pill.

Some people say that you can't get rid of depo in your system for as many years as you were on it (so If i was on it for 4 I would have it in my system for 4 more years and would be able to get pregnant), or that it's a year per shot till you can get pregnant. Honestley it depends on your body. I got off depo and was pregnant with in 2 months. That pregnancy did result in miscarraiage (not related to the depo). But I was pregnant within another year, and that pergenancy was perfect. I would recommend Depo to those that can handle it. However if you are looking for long term birth control, I would recomend and IUD. After my baby I went with this, and it is by far the best BC I have ever been on, and I have been on them all.

Just remember, your body is yours, it is uniquie and can respond differently then other peoples. If you feel fine, your doc is not concerned, and you are generally happy then maybe this is the BC method for you! :)

You might have to go on the "pill" to get your cycle back to normal. I was on Depo for less than a year and it messed me up big time. I did not have a period while I was on it. It took almost a year before I had a regular cycle again, and it took the pill to do it. My hormones were a mess. I don't recommend the Depo shots to anyone because of the havoc it causes to your hormonal balance. Hope this is helpful.

I was on Depo for 2-3 years. I loved it and really loved not having a period. It took me 8 months to get pregnant after stoping. I would check with your OB though.

Go see your OBGYN. They can help answer these questions correctly and monitor what is going on.
Do not look on the net, the best person to advise you the right way is your OB.

I would also suggest checking in with your dr to rule out anything other than just left over effect from the depo. It is not unusual to have to wait more than a year for the hormones to leave your system and for your body to regulate itself again-and it's too bad that drs tend to leave that info out when doling out birth control. I personally would not attempt going on the pill to re-regulate your body, as then you're just playing with more hormones and not letting your body balance out. Odds are you are just going to be stuck in a waiting game for a while.

I would also suggest reading the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. Very well worth the read, especially when you are trying to figure out what's going on with your body and trying to get pregnant. GL!
