Tween Boy Santa Gift Ideas

My son turns 11 in a few weeks. He's at that akward age - doesn't really want toys and the technology items he thinks he wants we won't let him have (ie laptop, TV for his room). He wanted a video camera which I was willing to get but grandma took him shopping for Christmas/birthday last weekend and bought it for him already :( So now I'm totally out of ideas and so is he. I was thinking a Kindle as he likes to read and I have one - but he says he likes the "feel" of books. We do have a Wii and he has a DS but he doesn't spend a lot of time on either so I don't think video games are a good gift. He has my old 35mm camera and an inexpensive digital camera coming from other grandma. I'm willing to spend in the $100-$150 range and want it to be special as I know this is the last year we can pretend he still believes in Santa (next year he'll get to help keep it a secret from his younger brother). Any ideas are appreciated! I'm telling other family members to get gift cards or give him the gift of an event (sporting tix, museum membership). TIA!

EDIT: We honestly don't want him to have any device that has internet access that is portable - he can get on the family computer whenever he wants to do online stuff. so ipods, kindle fire etc is not an option. He's got a bicycle & helmet, scoote already plays guitar and takes karate lessons and we feel that that kind of equipment is something we get when he needs not for a special once a year present. We are taking him to Disneyland for his birth so really looking for something he can open on Christmas morning and be surprised by.

What can I do next?

My daughter is 12 and we got her an inexpensive tablet. It has an ereader on it but she can also do other things like, facebook, play games, store pictures(she is getting a video camera too) and she likes to look up videos with song lyrics on youtube. We spent around $100 so it is definitely not an ipad but it will work for her needs.Oh and my son is 10 and he is getting a foosball table and these spy glasses(my hubby found at an online spy shop) they have an mp3 player, night vision and a camera in them but they look like sunglasses. Not sure if your son would be interested but mine is going to flip :)

The iPod touch is great! My daughter got one for her 8th birthday and she loves it.

All of my kids have TV's and my oldest got a laptop at 6 too. Nothing wrong with encouraging technology. I find the more things that my kids have, the better they are at using them, but the less inclined they are to sit on their tails.

Our kids are all getting their own Kindle Fire this Christmas. They are $200 each, but they are getting FABULOUS reviews. So even if he likes the feel of a real book, this has the apps like an ipad for a much more affordable price.

What about a bike, scooter, musical instrument, DS?

Or how about a trip somewhere? It can be inexpensive and a weekend away...or even a night away.

I would get him an android tablet. You can get them in that range. Celocity makes the Cruz, it's barely $100. If you get the $20 cover that has a keyboard on it, you sort of meet the laptop request and the kindle thing. I'm sure he would have a blast with it.

How about a magazine subscription or a membership to someplace he would enjoy (Marine world, a museum, Skyhigh jumping, sports lessons etc.)

There are lots of cool remote control vehicles, including helicopters and boats. Not the boring ones we had as kids. My 10 year old loves his Ferrari. He also LOVES his iPod touch. No Internet (I agree!) but portable fun games and music. There are also some cheap players at toys r us that you dock the iPod and they can play the music in their rooms. This is a new favorite past time of my son. Good luck, I am in the same boat! All mine wants are video games and I want him to branch out!

I was also going to say ipod touch without internet. My 3 year old has taken over ours to watch movies and play angry birds. My other idea is some books and clothing. My niece just turned 11 and only got a pair of shoes from the Goodwill, a sweatshirt from a sibling, and I think 1 other gift I can't remember. It's kind sad, my sister's family is struggling to get by at times. I don't have enough cash to buy all my nieces and nephews b-day gifts - I have 14. So anyway, just be happy your son has all the things he does! I don't think he'd look back and be disappointed.
