Two Year Old Waking During the Night

My two year old has been waking during the night for the past month. She usually wakes around 2am and calls for me. I go in sooth her a bit and usually she falls back to sleep, at other times it takes a while to get her back to sleep. We have not made any changes to her schedule or bedtime routine that I would think would cause her to start waking again. Has anyone else experienced this with their two year old. Is this a phase, should I stop going in during the night to help her back to sleep?

What can I do next?

When my oldest was around 2 and we put her into a toddler bed she done the walking at night thing for a month or two. We eventually started putting a gate up where she could not leave her room and she got a tv for her birthday. When she would get up at night we would turn cartoons or something on and set the timer for 30 mins and she would eventually go back to sleep without messing with anything.

Hi J.,
As a parent, changes to sleep patterns are concerning because of what they could represent. I know many allergy and digestive problems are first seen in sleep disruption. If I had it to do it over again, I would certainly try some things to see if you can impact it which would give a direction. The first thing I would do is remove milk either all together or anytime past about 3-4:00pm. Change to rice milk if you have to or just do water or watered down juice. Also, you can add a proibotic to her juice (that you can get at whole foods or other natural food store). The reason for this is to see if she is having digestive issues or yeast overgrowth (both which cause sleep disturbance). If these seem to have an impact, you can start your research into how you could impact those using natural medicine, etc to correct it.

If she was vaccinated in the last 2-3 months, I would certainly find out what vaccine she had and read on that one to ensure she is not having other symptoms you are missing in relation to that. There are several great vaccine books out (Stephanie Cave and Marhon have both written good books you can find on Amazon). There is also a DVD out that I hear is very informative.

Best of luck and I hope happy return to sleeping! J.

Try waiting a little while before going in. If you go right in, try waiting 5 to 10 minutes to see if she goes back to sleep on her own. This is just a phase and my son went through it as well. Sometimes you have to force yourself to wait and not go right in.

My daughter is 20 mos and she does that too. I wait about 5-10 min before I go in. It is really hard not to go in. But she usually goes right back to sleep. Hope this helps!

Hi J.! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I understand your delimma! It's hard to decide when to let your child self sooth. I would suggest to change her night time routine but, you have already done that. I have 15 year old twin girls and a 17 year old son. Let me tell you it was no walk in the park. I felt like I had triplets! LOL because of the birthdays and part of the year their ages are one year apart.
My Solution Advice:
Just before her bath have a play session that tire her out. It doesn't matter what the activity is. If you walk in the afternoon take her out. If you exercise at home or dance for exercise then put on her favorite music and dance in the house. Whatever it is you have to get her excited with activity then a soothing bath. It worked for me and you know that when we are active through out our own day and just before bed it helps us to sleep more relaxed. This is also true for our kids. Try it and let me know if I helped.
Sincerely,
P.
