Get a new bottle of Preparation H and dab it on. My little boy gets them all the time and we have tried everything. Someone suggested this and it was gone within a couple days. So far he has not gotten any more. We've tried all the expensive meds that are made for fever blisters and they did not work at all. Good luck!

I never had any luck with anything over the counter. I had a prescription for an ointment called Zovorix and that stuff was amazing. If you catch it when it's just itchy, and put this on, you will not get the sore. If you get the sore and start using it immediately - it will be all gone inside of 5 days. As time goes on you will rarely get them any longer at all. It's been over a year since I had one and I used to get them every 3-4 months. Maybe you can get some from your dr for the rest of the duration and future. It treats the virus.

Now, I have a prescription for Valtrex - that's why I know it's been well over a year - I've never had to use it. So, the Zovorix was good stuff!

There is a difference between fever blisters and cold sores.

I've had cold sores since I was a young child and the days of Campho Phenique give me flash-backs. It really might help numb and dry things out, but I also have used Herpecin-L. It comes in a tube like lipstick and it's very soothing. It won't scab things like Campho might.

You might want to check with your doctor. I actually get an antiviral medication which helps tremendously, but it wouldn't be necessary if your lips are breaking out from sunburn or other causes.

You can buy Herpecin-L over the counter. Ask your pharmacist about it.

I wish you the best because I know, of all people, how miserable mouth sores are.

Take care!

Call your doctor and ask to have a prescription called in for Valtrex or Zovorix. AMAZING stuff and will provide relief very quicky. Also, take Lysine (nutritional supplement) orally

If you take Valtrex the moment you feel that tingly feeling before a fever blister, you can avoid it altogether. Even if you wait 24 hours, it can halt the outbreak and promote healing rapidly. Once you're in a full breakout, the ointment is good for healing faster.

Sometimes I get fever blisters monthly and sometimes it's 6 months or more. It always comes back in exactly the same place. Is this your first outbreak? They say that the first one is the worst. My first breakout was in high school, before they had Valtrex and Zovirix. Those prescriptions seriously are wonderful and make it all so much more bearable. Your doctor probably won't make you go in for the prescription, most likely will call it in. I keep a prescription for Valtrex at all times because time is of the essence for treatment. My GYN gets sample and will usually give me some to have on-hand. She'll also call in a prescription with multiple refills. I always have it in the house and take it with me when I travel, too.

I'm sure you already know that they fever blisters are highly contagious, particularly when they blisters open. Avoid touching them. Wash your hands frequently. Do not use a washcloth or towel that touches your lips anywhere else on your face or body. Throw away your lipstick if it has touched them, and be careful not to contaminate your make-up. Good luck!

I like Dawn's answer.

Also, add some L-Lysine supplements to your diet. This will help to balance the arganine, which triggers the fever blisters. There's good information on the internet regarding which foods are higher in arganine and which are higher in lysine.

I hope you feel better soon.

I am so sorry. I get these once in a blue moon. They spread and hurt too.

I learned when I was in college what to do, and I hope you will go to the drugstore NOW and get this so that you will start feeling better soon.

Get some Campho-phenique. I promise you that not only will it take the heat out in a day, it will stop the spread.

Since you have a bad case of it, get the bottle and apply with a cotton ball. Also get the tube to carry around with you. Use it often the first couple of days - every time you feel the heat. After it gets a little better, around the second day or so, I put mentholatum Chapstick on my lips in between campho-phenique applications because the campho-phenique dries them out so much.

Ever since I started doing this, any blister I've gotten has been short-lived and easy to deal with. As SOON as I feel one coming, I pull out my little tube, apply all day long, and that's pretty much it. The key is to start right away.

So get to the drugstore!

All my best,
Dawn

As a fellow fever blister sufferer - I can tell you what you need to do. There is a medicine CVS carries that is a one application treatment. It is a CVS brand so ask the pharmacist if you can't find it on the shelf. You apply the whole tube on and around the blister area. Within a day the blister dries up and you can hardly even see it anymore. It is amazing.

Forget Abreva or any other cold sore "treatments" where you have to apply several times a day. In my opinion they don't work to speed up healing.

Another thing - if you suffer regularly with cold sores ask your doctor to give you a prescription for Valtrex. Yes it is embarrassing to get it filled at the Pharmacy because you will want to announce to the whole store that no you do have genital herpes - but the embarrasment is worth it because this will clear up a cold sore FAST!

I suffered from fever blisters every month before my period and about a week before my cycle I would start taking the Valtrex to prevent a breakout.

I have been fever blister free for a year now.

I've had lots of success with abreva. But yeah, the earlier you start applying the medication, the better it works.
