I had my 18 week ultra sound today (and we are having a girl yay!) and the tech found 3 bright spots (2 by kidneys and one by heart). she said everything looked great but was going to show this to Dr just to be safe. Now I am worried and cant help it. She said it was probably nothing but I am still thinking about it. She told me that many times there are things that show up that are nothing but they always look into it just to be in the safe side. Am i worried for nothing? I know I should just put it in the back of my mind until my next appt or if they call but I cant help it. Any advice would be great.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks moms for all your kind words and sharing your stories as well. I talked to the Dr 1st thing Mon morning adn she said that downs was not a concern because I showed no other signs. She just wants me to go in for a stage 3 ultra sound with a perinantal specialist so they can have a better look at the "bright spots" which are calcium. She said she is not worried but they want to have a better look just to be on the safe side, so I am feeling much better and not stressed out anymore. thanks again , I love this group!!!! :)

They are just being cautious. I had it too, and have two healthy children. If it is worrying you, call the doctor and discuss it, that is what they are there for. Otherwise, if you can, try to relax and they will tell you when you need to worry.

try to calm down a bit. they thought my son was going to be downs. they even gave me the option to abort! i decided not to and he is now a healthy 3 year. i had the screening 4 downs done via blood work and it came back abnormal, then they did an ultrasound and said downs. well they were wrong. so try to calm down a little bit. i know it is hard.

Try not to freak out too much :)

My son had that same issue when I was pregnant with him. They had me worried SICK that something was wrong with him. Turned out to be small calcium deposits. Now that sounds bad, but I was told that they are more common than people think and they disappear on their own. Basically the calcium gets absorbed back into the body.

As long as your blood tests come back fine, You ARE FINE. and so is your baby.

My son is 2 and literally has NEVER been sick. You're lil one will be fine.

OH don't let your dr. freak you out and make you think you NEED to have any surgeries done to "check it out"
You do NOT need an amniocentesis, those can be more harm than they help :)

Those showed up on mine.. I have a super healthy ( never been sick) 8 month old:) It'll be fine. They just need to be overcautious because it's so important.

I think extra caution is always good. Just call your dr., say this is really worrying you & see if she can look at the ultrasound ASAP & discuss her findings with you. If she knows how stressed you are, if she's a good dr., she should look into it ASAP b/c of course stress isn't good for the baby. Good luck!

First of all, the ultrasound techs aren't supposed to tell you anything except the sex! The doctor is the one who needs to read it and decide, that's why they are the doctor! I know it's not going to be easy to think about it, but just try to keep this in mind-they went to school to do ultrasounds not diagnose. I will be praying for you.

I would call your Dr office and ask to speak w/ the nurse. See if they can check your file to see if the Dr reviewed the ultrasound yet. If your Dr knows you are worried, he might even call you. My Dr did that for me before (he even gave me his cell number to call him back on and made me promise not to give it out LOL)

My daughter, now 15 months, had a bright spot on her heart for many months. The specialist mentioned it at our 3-D ultrasound around 18 weeks? and our regular doctor kept an eye on it throughout the pregnancy. He wasn't worried about it, as he said it was most likely just a calcium deposit that would get reabsorbed eventually. Our Nuchal Translucency screen and all our bloodwork came back normal. Since my doctor wasn't worried about it, I refused to worry about it. There was nothing I could/would do anyway and I completely trust my doctor. We kept seeing it on ultrasounds (I had one every visit, because insurance paid for it), but eventually I even forgot to ask about the bright spot. Sure enough, I asked around 36 weeks? and it was gone. My daughter was born perfectly healthy. Talk to your doctor about the ultrasound results, what those bright spots could possibly indicate in relation to all your other test results and then try not to worry about it. Good luck!
