i found out i need a level 2 ultra sound. when i had my first one and found i was having a girl the tech said the heart muscle was bright. something i shouldn't be worried about but that i'll need another one just to make sure nothing was abnormal. i didn't know it was to check for down syndrom. no one on either side of our familes has down syndrom and i'm kind of freaking out. i know it sounds pathetic and shallow but i really don't want my child to have it. i already worry about having a third child so close in age with my other two and i don't need any more stress. i don't want to hear about how shallow i am etc. i know if it happens than it was for a reason and God knows i will be able to provide and love the child...that isn't the problem. i can't remember what my dr said it was but i'd like to know if anyone has had this problem w/ the fetus' heart where it is bright and unusal. her heart beat is fine but its just the muscle on top that shows when it shouldn't. they call it a "finding" but that i shouldn't be worried. like i'm not going to worry when they mention the heart is different than most. hello! anyway, what should i expect at this dr's appt w/ the level 2 and has anyone experienced or have any infromation that i can look up about what it might be? i've looked but i don't know what i'm looking for so i'm kind of stuck. help please.

What can I do next?

Okay so I am right where you are, I am actually leaving in about 15 min to have my ultra sound. I spoke with my Dr and she said that the ultra sound is just to get a better look. They are really not worried about downs because you have to have other factors for them to be concerend, which I did not. As with the bright spots they are very common and have been showing up more because of the technological advances in the ultrasounds. When you go fro your stage 2 they will tell you everthing there, unlike the 1st ultra sound where your Dr has to look it over. The bright spots are called EIFs I believe and they are very common but the Drs just like to have a better look. I will keep you posted on how my ultra goes today so you have abetter idea what to expect when you get yours. If you have /s call you Dr dont look online because with out knowing all the specifics you could freak yourself out for nothing. Your Dr shoudl answer any ?s you have. Turst me I know its hard not to worry, but from going through this myself I found that this is a VERY COMMON thing. ((HUGS and LOVE) hope this helps at least a little

I had THE SAME issue with my first son.
Don't let your dr. freak you out. I KNOW it's hard not to right now.
Be thankful you have a dr. that is mindful enough to make sure everything IS
ok.

My son had the same issue when I was pregnant with him. I was freaking out the whole time because it seemed like I couldn't get a straight answer.
I went for my lvl 2 ultrasound totally expecting the worst.
Everything was FINE. The tech/ nurse there told me that all it was, was a calcium build up in his heart. *sounds scary but Wait*
I was told that it is NOT NOT NOT a sign of Downs. THat more babies have it than people realize and that it just gets absorbed back into their body on its own.

My son is now 2 y/o and has only been sick ONCE.
IF you need more info Please feel free to msg me, I can get into MORE detail if you need it.

P.s Don't go in for an amniocentesis because you are worried. That can actually cause ALOT more problems, such as miscarriage.

When I was pregnant with my 1st child... during the ultrasound, they found an abnormality with her heart. They ordered a level 2 ultrasound, with a Pediatric Heart Specialist.
Yes, it was nerve wracking... that ultra sound took about 1 hour... it was found, fortunately, that my daughter's heart was fine. The Specialist found no abnormalities.... at that point. She was born fine and healthy.

They order the level 2 ultrasound, because it is protocol, with any 'abnormality' that they may 'suspect' in a normal ultrasound. It is investigative.... and to confirm or dismiss previous suspicions on a deformity....

It is all very complicated... and going online to seek info is not real reliable with these complex conditions.
So, ask the Specialist... that is what they are there for.

Next, Downs syndrome or not... the Doctor should be sending you to a Genetic Counselor. That is routine, for any tests at this point.

all the best,
Susan

It sounds like your baby has what are called echogenic foci - bright spots on the heart. They can potentially be a sign of Down's Syndrome, but are often not a problem, generally resolve on their own and cause no problems for the baby. They saw this on my daughter's heart - there was nothing wrong with her. I'm pregnant with baby number 3 and they see them with her, too. Coupled with the results of my NT scan and 1st trimester bloodwork (which showed basically no risk for Down's), they do not believe there is any problem with this baby either. A level 2 ultrasound isn't different from any other ultrasound, it just allows the technician a more detailed view.

You really should call your doctor and talk to them about your concerns. Ask them to explain and clarify what they're seeing so that you'll understand it.

I don't think you are pathetic, I don't know of anyone that would like to have a child with a medical condition. How far along are you? when is the ultrasound? did your doctor do blood work on you? Go here and see if this helps you: http://www.cdadc.com/ds/downsyndromepregnancysymptoms.htm
I hope you can get some more information. Please don't worry yourself over this right now, I know that it is easier said than done, but your baby will feel all the tension as well.
Pray and command evey organ, vessel, cell, tissue ,member and molecule in your baby's body to conform to the word of God.
Blessings

Look up bright heart found in prenatal ultrasound. From what I read it is fairly common and usually presents no problems. Good luck.
