My son is now 14 months, he started eating dairy products like yogurt at about 8 months and has loved it since. After his first birthday i couldnt wait to give him milk. and he loves it! as soon as we wake up in the morning he asks for his glass of milk. Up until this week i havent noticed any difference in his stool or diaper rash, no reactions at all. Then out of no where he gets blisters that bleed and the red rash everywhere, wev tried creams, ointment, cornstartch, air drying, baths, different diapers, and finally no milk. The rash seemed to go away when we stopped using baby wipes the diapers we had been using on him his whole life. Yesterday he had half a cup of milk. This morning his butt looked just as bad as before. Im sure it is the milk but i just dont want to believe it, why didnt the milk give him a rash the first time i gave it to him, the first month and a half i gave it to him? how do i know its the milk if the rash wont go away

What can I do next?

The same thing happened with my daughter. My husband is lactose I tolerant...so we tried giving her lactaid milk and that was the end of the problem. Lactaid milk is a pain in the neck though because we travel a lot and you can't get it in convenience stores or restaurants, it is in a paper carton so it doesn't do well in the cooler for long periods, have to make sure the car is in the shade and the cooler has enough ice etc... My husband used to take lactaid pills....they are also a pain as you have to take 1-3 every time you eat or drink dairy if it has been more than 30 minutes:-(. I discovered a product that my husband loves...and they make a children's chewable version.....Digestive Advantage - for lactose intolerance.. It's great, you take one with breakfast and you are good to go for 24 hours! It revolutionized our lives and made it so much easier. Good luck, I hope that this helps!

Our older son started the same way, then about a month or so into whole milk he started vomiting & having diarrhea, only once a day though. We switched him to soy and he had no problem. He could have dairy, whole milk seemed to be the issue. When he was 2 we tried it again with no problem, but ended up switching to 2% (after all he was 2 and that's what we all drink here). He did fine with the 2% as well. When our son started with the diaper rash, he actually developed yeast and subsequently a staph infection, so once the yeast was gone, the staph infection was the problem, but we just put a prescription antibiotic cream on the actual open spots and it cleared up. I tend to say that that diaper rash was "yeast gone bad" - LOL. So, def keep an eye on it, but I would try soy milk for about a week like a previous poster said (or any other lactose free milk that you choose-may want to talk to the doc) and see if it clears up or if the problem re-occurs. Good luck!

If the rash won't go away, I'd take him to a doc. Odds are he developped a fungus in his buttocks area. Plus he might be intolerant to milk. Allergies develop overtime, but can be very sudden. I find the 12 month guideline to switch is just that. Your baby's digestive system is not necessarily ready for whole cow's milk. Try soy and see if it helps. But definitely take him to the doctor. Good luck!

The two biggest things kids are allergic/sensitive to are gluten and casein. Those are the proteins in dairy and wheat, oats, barley. The child's (and adult's) gut cannot break down those huge proteins and then you start to see a skin reaction. Whenever you something come out on the skin, you can only imagine what is going on in the gut! Get him on I-Flora For Kids, a really good probiotic and ditch ALL dairy products. If not, it will start to affect his behavior and development.

Great that you notice what's up with your son and able to pin point it. It's sometimes difficult to do. Allergies can come up anytime in life. That being said, dairy from cows is meant for calves, not really healthy for humans as you're now seeing. Many only show small signs and people just dismiss those warning signs.
There are many alternatives you can feed your son without the cow. There is almond milk (so easy to make yourself too!) or oat milk,, hemp milk (full of protein and omega 3,6 and 9), coconut milk, tons of variety. Also, there is a non dairy cheese that is not made from soy called Daiya, it comes in several flavors and even shredding in bags. There's also rice cheese and soy.
If you're worried about calcium, you'll do better with no dairy sources anyway. You can try making some fun nori rolls stick some brown rice, several veggies, avocado, and sesame seeds inside and roll up. Nori (and other seaweeds) and full of calcium, iron, iodine, and many other vitamins and minerals. Sesame seeds are full of calcium as are green leafy veggies.
Sorry your son is suffering but hopefully you'll sort it out soon.
