Update on My Dog J

So I took J to the vet today (who was very good looking ;) ). He didn't have any infection, but the vet said it was going to get worse before it gets better. So he gave him an antibiotic to fight infection and a topical cream for burns and told me to give him the pain meds I have left from when he tore his ACL. I told him EXACTLY what happened and he thanked me. They had to shave J in spots so they could see exactly what they were dealing with. And when I saw how bad, and i mean BAD, it was, I broke down. I was crying so hard that some one could do this to my poor lil Sweet Pea.
He took down my FIL's info and has mine. He said he was going to file a report with the ASPCA and they will call me and my other family members to get our side of what happened. They will then follow up with my FIL and charge him. The vet said he wasn't sure exactly what they would do because he has never had a case where the abuser wasn't the person standing in front of him. I take J back to the vet on Saturday for a follow up- and then again a few days later. Just to keep an eye on it in case we need to change the course of action. So for now, hes resting and on the mend.
No one has heard from my FIL- and I hope we don't for a looooooong time.

Thanks everyone for your support and advice.

Thanks for your update, M.. I hope that J will get past this without too much trauma (especially being around men other than your husband...)

I really worry if no one knows where your FIL is. He needs to be found and assessed before he ends up on the evening news. Even though you don't want to see him, it's important to take steps to find him, honey. There is something badly wrong and he needs help before he hurts a person.

I hope that ASPCA will petition a judge to ask the police to find him.

Dawn is right. I know your focus is on your dog just now, but please, talk to the police right away. Someone in authority needs to locate your FIL because if he could do this to a dog, he could do this or worse to a human being--or to himself. Even if FIL is a total jerk of all jerks, he's also legitimately sick (you said he was deeply depressed); can you imagine the lifelong issues for your husband if his dad is found dead in a ditch or arrested for hurting another person, especially if no one was told that FIL might be a risk to others? Better to tell the police all about this now, and say that it is likely FIL is not in control of his actions. The cops well know that people who hurt animals often go on to hurt people. And for a man who never even got out of bed except for meals to now be not only out of bed but out of the house and gone -- very scary. I think he may end up missing or dead. Right now I know you might not mind either very much, and of course he should never come near your child ever again, but I'd at least let the authorities know he's out there and potentially dangerous to others or himself.

I'm not saying take FIL in and help him yourselves, I'm saying tell the authorities he's out there and possibly dangerous.

wow. I missed your post yesterday... but when I read this, I went back and looked at it. I cannot. imagine. Just cannot.
wow.
Sending you big hugs and hoping for a quick recovery for your dog. Hopefully he will not associate any of this with any of you or his crate... and only with your FIL.
It does make me curious though... thinking about everything in your first post. Is there a chance your FIL has some undiagnosed imbalances or cancer or anything weird? Because it is interesting that your dog barks at him and him alone. I mean, I get that dogs pick up on vibes and that it was evident your FIL didn't like the dog.... but even more than that, dogs sometimes can actually SMELL when things are chemically wrong with people... that's why some "service dogs" work with epileptics and diabetics--they can alert BEFORE something happens with the person's condition.
Just a thought that there MAY (possibly?) be more to this than just a mean old man...

I was thinking about you and your special pet. Best wishes to you and I wish for a speedy recovery for your pet.

Stand strong and allow the process to take place against your FIL. He's dangerous. Thank God he didn't hurt any of your children or you. He's sick and needs help.

Bless you, I know it must be difficult .

I am glad Sweet Pea is ok. You did a brave thing and Layed the fault at the right door. Suppose FIL did something to mil when she yelled at him or something? That might be next. Hope your H realizes it.

Oh my gosh - somehow I missed your original question and I went back to read it.

You absolutely did the right thing, and I thank God your fur baby is relatively OK.

This incident needs to go on his "record" somehow . . . good for you not sweeping it under the rug. I might even mention it to the police to see if he can be committed under some sort of mental hold. Yikes.
