Uterine Fibroids, Anyone?

Hi - I have suffered from severely painful periods ever since I had the Novasure procedure done and have just been diagnosed with uterine fibroids. Has anyone else suffered from these? What treatment options were you given and what worked for you? I will not see the OB/GYN until next week, but I am curious if anyone has any advice on what I should ask at my appointment. I am a 34 year old mother of a wonderful 12 year old and have already had *permanent* tubal ligation, so the only thing about a potential hysterectomy that scares me is who is going to clean the house if I am laid up for that long?! Thanks in advance for any input you ladies may have!

Oh, I probably should have mentioned that by "suffered", I mean pain so bad that I come close to or do vomit, pain so bad I can't get out of bed, and it's also bad enough to wake me from a sound sleep.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone I have had the pleasure of "speaking" with! It isn't fibroids that are causing the problem - I have only one and it is the size of a peanut. However, this could be related to the endomitriosis (I was diagnosed with that about eight years ago), which the Novasure should have cleared up. Apparently, with the existing condition and the procedure, it is not uncommon to have scar tissue build up and have "pockets" where the endomitrial tissue that is trying to shed remains trapped. Also, apparently, it can get infected! So, the first step is antibiotics to see if that tissue is so old and nasty that it has become a bacterial infection. I just had my period while on the antibiotics...and the pain was managed! I felt fabulous compared to how I usually feel, so I am hopeful that we have found the problem. The down side is that the antibiotic is making me really sick, and I am allergic to most of them so I will suffer through the extreme fatigue for a couple more days and hope for another decent period next month. Thanks again for all the advice and support!

Well, have had them and two doctors found them when I was having my second child still had some with the third child (4 1/2 yrs ago) had an ultra sound May 07 was having some bad cramps and bad PMS there were no fibroids none, none at all. I was told they come and go they don't usually cause a problem. Since then finally in December my body must of been going through a change my PMS hasn't been so bad the past few months. Not sure why you would need a hysterectomy but I'd get a 2nd and 3rd opinion before doing it no matter how great my doctor is. Best of luck to you.

YES....Not Fun...I have had them so bad that I too have thrown up. Luckly for me they have gotten better as I have had children. With my youngest they grew through the prgnancy. I looked like I had three babies instead of one. You could see the fibriod tumors and then the baby. Before I had the babies a stronger birth control seemed to help. But the drs. did mention in the future a hysterectomy...so see what the drs can suggest...But know you're not alone.

Hello... I was just diagnosed with Uterine Fibroids when I delivered my daughter at age 34 almost 2 years ago. I have not had any "real" problems... she put me on Yaz birth control that completely stopped my periods as of last June, so I continued to have a period for a year after she put me on them but then they stopped. And occasionally painful sex, but not often enough to worry about. That's all the info I have but maybe it will help!

I don't know if this will help you at all, but I too have uterine fibroids and nothing will be done about it unless it causes me problems. I have never had problems with them. They always notice them when I have ultrasounds with each pregnancy. They were found at my 3rd pregnancy. Nothing has changed so far.

I'm 32 years old. My mother had a lot of large uterine fibroids and very heavy periods because of it. I don't know a lot of details, but I know she was on birth control pills for it for a couple of years. She finally lost so much blood she passed out. Then she had a hysterectomy.
If you have a hysterectomy, your 12 year old is going to clean the house (and your husband, of course, if you are married). Twelve years old is plenty old to do housework. Of course, things aren't going to be quite the way you like them, but you can let it go. The bathrooms and floors can wait for weeks if necessary. Your son/daughter can do dishes, laundry, and basic food preparation. You can start working on that with him/her now.
When I was on bedrest for 13 weeks with my fifth pregnancy, my husband and children really stepped up and learned to get the work done. My children are ages 10, 9 ,7, 4, and 10 months. If you aren't married, you will definitely need some adult help. Also, it would be a good idea when you cook to start making double portions and freezing half of it. That way you'll have some handy freezer meals if you have to have surgery.
Good luck.

I had them years ago the size of grapefruits. Very heavy and frequent periods resulted in a cesarean type operation to have them removed. No problems since then.

Talk about your options with your OB/GYN. :)

Fibroids get bigger when you have your period because blood collects in them. Mom had a chance to look at the ones that came out of me because the doctor took a picture for her and she said they were actually the size of grapefruits! I'm glad I didn't see them. I think there were 8 of them.

Hi,

I had several fibroids removed in 1998. I had a myomectomy. At the time I had no children so it was done by an infertilty surgen. The fibriods caused frequent periods with heavy bleeding, severe anemia, and extreme pain. I did the lupron shots for 4 months to improve my blood count before the procedure. I was so happy with the results. The healing was about the same as with a C-section.

The other options were freezing,(which was new at the time), and cutting off the blood supply to the fibroid, and of course a hysterectomy. None of these were an option for me because I wanted children.

My best friend had a hysterectomy for the same reason about 2 years ago. She had it done lapercopicly(forgive my spelling)and was back on her feet in two weeks.

I found great info at the Mayo Clinic site and WEB MD.

Good Luck! I hope all goes well.
