It might just be irritated. If he continues to have discomfort after tomorrow, I would get him into the pediatrician on Monday. If it is an infection he'll need to be on an antibiotic to clear it up. If it's not properly treated, the infection could get to his bladder and his kidneys, and then he will be not only sicker, but in a lot of pain. You can probably give him Tylenol in the meantime, but once an infection is there you can't clear it up with home remedies. I'm assuming you are referring to cranberry juice, which may help prevent uti's, but it doesn't treat them. Sorry mama, got to get to the doctor for this one.

I'm all about natural, home remedies, but for a UTI I always go to the doctor, because I've learned (the hard way) that I can't find a home remedy that works for me. Cranberry extract and/or juice can help prevent a UTI, but usually can't help clear one up once it begins. And my SIL swears by something called "d-manos" (not sure on the spelling). Good luck!

Take him to the dr. asap. Don't mess around with home remedies.... I am prone to uti's and they are just MISERABLE and they get worse very quickly if not treated correctly. The infection can spread to the kidneys and then it is even more difficult to get rid of. Hope your little guy feels better soon!

My 4 year old son had a UTI 3 weeks ago. We took him to his ped and a urine test confirmed it was a UTI. Antibiotics cleared it up within a few days. However, apparently it is not common for boys to get them, and our ped has referred us to a pediatric urologist. Apparently a UTI in a boy could be a sign of other problems. Our appointment is actually this afternoon. Good luck.

I have two girls and at different times both would say it would hurt when they peed - but they never had a uti and would only complain once or twice a day every great once in a while (never knew the reason why).I would wait a day and take him to the doctor if he complains every time he urinates otherwise it might be that it was just an irritation of some sort. If it is a uti there are certain food and drinks to avoid to not make it more painful to urinate than it already is and most importantly he needs to drink as much water as possible (there are lists online as to what not to eat or drink).

I could not agree more with Jasmine. I am unfortunately all too familiar with UTIs and have been seeing a urogynecologist for years. He has taught me that while there is some evidence that cranberry juice can PREVENT UTIs, you do not want to drink it (especially in large quantities) once you have a UTI, because it is very acidic and will cause more burning in the urethra. What you want to do is a) see a doctor to test if there is indeed an infection and get the proper antibiotics if there is one, and b) drink lots of water to water down the urine and make it less acidic, therefore less painful to the irritated urethra.

Also, if you leave the infection untreated it can spread to the kidneys and become quite serious.

So, you'll want to call your ped on this one.

You should never try to self-diagnose anything, even something as seemingly simple as a uti. Go to the ped for an official diagnosis . If he truly does have a uti, they'll prescribe the right medicine to cure the problem. Good luck!
