Vaccinations and School Requirements

I know that there are some moms out there who have not had their children vaccinated or have chosen to delay some of their children's vaccinations. Unfortunately, schools and daycares require that children have certain vaccinations to attend school. I found info online that states you can sign a waiver for religious reasons but I can't find any info about filling out waivers due to other reasons. One of my sons has Aspergers and I want to delay my newborn's vaccinations but I will have to go back to work at some point and will need to consider childcare. Any info on how to handle this situation?

There was an entire thread about vaccines yesterday if you can look that up there was a lot of good info on that. I know you can get a waiver on religous and medical and I think one other reason the thread last night was read good for that info. Good luck, A. J

Ask the question on www.dfwareamoms.com.

There are LOTS of non-vaxing moms on that site and they are very knowlegeable about the laws pertaining to vax/school/daycare.

You have to write to the State department of health immunization branch and request an immunization exemption for reasons of conscience (snail mail). Include the children's names and birthdates, the number of forms requested, the parent's name and address...I believe that's it. And sign it. They will send you an official exemption form, you check off which immunizations you want to exempt, and get it notarized. The daycare will require an original copy to keep on file, so you may want to request several (I think the limit is 5). You have to get new ones and notarize them every 2 years. Search the department of health website for more details. I just did this 6 weeks ago for my new guy and a new one for my big guy.

K. - here is the link you need to the Texas Dept. of Health - http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/immunize/school/default.shtm

There you'll find the official affidavit and instructions on what to do with it. You can get the affidavit for "reasons of conscience" (which is what the religious belief falls under).

An official affidavit is acceptable for enrollment, but do know that only schools that receive state funding are required to accept an affidavit in lieu of vaccination records. Any private school, which includes the majority of daycares, may refuse admittance, regardless of the reason (medical, religious, etc.).

You might try calling the corporate offices of some of the chains ahead of time and finding out what their policy is. The request is highly uncommon at a daycare level, and the director may be unsure what to do, and that will frustrate you as you're looking for a good center - and you may even get varying answers from different locations of the same chain. If you know ahead of time that, say, Creme de la Cremes will accept the affidavits, then you can feel more confident about even beginning the enrollment process.

Good luck!

Go to the following link. http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/immunize/docs/faq_exemption.pdf
You will need to print out the form, fill it out and mail or fax to the address/number stated. They will then send you as many forms as you need, which you must have notarized. Good luck and God bless.

K.,
Under Texas law you are granted an examption based either on your religious belifes or medical reasons. Here is a link to the website that I have found very helpful
www.vaccineinfo.net/exemptions
I know several people who have been granted the exemption and have said it was a rather an easy process.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. I have done an extensive reasearch on this topic and I'd be happy to share more info if you need it.

go here and scroll down. There is a link to Exclusions from Immunization Requirements. You will find detailed info how to obtain it etc. You shouldn't have ANY problem to get your child to a school once armed with the notorized document.

good luck

There is a generic exemption form that you can get from your pediatrian. Also Dr. Rao in Plano and Carrolton specializes in Autism, Allergies, and Asthma. His office offers the MMR split up into separate shots and he will sign expemption forms. Remember too the preservatives are not the only harmful substances in the vaccinations :) Jenny McCarthy has a great info. page from her visit to Larry King Live this month on his website worth the reading :)
Good luck and if you ever desire to work at home rather than go back to work and put your children in daycare you can request info at www.workathomeunited.com/texas to learn how I have been able to stay home with my kids and earn a reliable income all while educating families. :) It is not for everyone but it has truly been a blessing for my family :)

I would maybe find someone to do in home care.
I would talk to the health dept too and see what they can offer as advice. Good luck.
I was also thinking do you know of a support group for children with Aspergers? If there is I would ask someone in the group or a social worker.

Good for you! We are not vaccinating our kids either. The state of Texas allows relgious, philosophical, and medical exemptions. Stick to your guns! Good luck!

Your pedi may be able to write out the reasons for your children's not being vaccinated. We are having concerns about vaccinations, too, but my main concerns regard the preservatives in them (Thimerosal, etc.) I have a nephew who also has Asperger's, so we elected to go with the preservative-free vaccines, including our son's flu shots! And our son has just been diagnosed with PDD-NOS. I've been reading a book called "Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder: A Mother's Story of Research & Recovery" by Karyn Seroussi. It was loaned to us by a friend, but I'm pretty sure you can still find it in the bookstores. Some of the other moms are "spreading out" their kids' vaccinations: when they are due for 4+ vaccinations, they will do 1/2 of them in the month they are due, and the other 1/2 about a month later, or so. You might want to try that. The thinking is that the kids' systems are being overwhelmed with the antibodies, and that is what is actually triggering the autism. Also, have you had your son tested for allergies? Karyn talks about that a lot in her book, too. We are trying to find a pediatric allergist who specializes in ASD, so we make sure we get the "right" tests done!

CONGRATULATIONS on your new son! And please let me know if you find out any more info on the ASD.

It is a simple form. You write a letter, mail it to the state, they send you back the letter/form, and you take it and have it notarized and turn it in to the school or camp or daycare in lieu of a shot record. It is free.

Have your doctor sign your paperwork and write a note stating the vaccinations were withheld due to medical reasons. I worked as a nurse in an office, and that was what we did when a patient couldn't receive vaccinations on schedule due to health conditions in the child or in family members (esp. live vaccines in cancer patients). That should be all that is needed to satisfy state law.
