Viral Fever Going Around

hi everyone--

has anyone's children experienced a viral fever recently? my 17-month-old daughter came down with a low-grade fever on friday (100.7) and has yet to shake it. this is her first fever ever, so i called the doctor on friday who said a lot of viral fevers have been going around. my daughter alternates between acting normally and being lethargic, which is understandable. she feels warm to the touch. she's drinking plenty but definitely not eating as much. i've been giving her tylenol, too. her doctor said that if it doesn't break by tomorrow, to bring her in. i'm just wondering if anyone else has been dealing with this and if so, how long it lasted.

thanks!

You mean there are several viruses going around that are causing "natural fevers" in the children. Yes this is the case. It is always something going around. The good thing is you can not get those same type of viruses twice, so once they run the course you are good to go.
I would first move to a motrin fever reducer. Motrin (either brand or off brand) tends to work better than Tylenol (brand or off brand). You can even alternate the two. Keep your baby cool. Dress her in just her diaper. Nothing more. Even though I know cuddle time is nice right now, be careful with the cuddling. Only one parent and not her between two of you, especially in bed. Cuddling actually warms the body. Your body causes hers to heat up more. Only allow her to sleep with a sheet on top. If she will sleep without anything that that is better. Keep her hydrated as you are saying you are doing... Do not worry about food. NOT even adults eat when sick. So not eatting is normal. Do not worry about nutrition. Jello, Popcicles, Freeze Pops, Icecream all make wonderful meals at this time.
Know 48 hours for a virus to run it's course is not bad. Most run the course in 3-5 days. So this is really not long at all if it is just Sunday mid day and this just started Friday... Remember fevers are good things. It means the body is naturally fighting off a forgin substance. I actually get VERY WORRIED when people are sick and fever free... Relax and congratulate yourself on her being healthy for almost a year and a half... You have great immune systems there lady.... Love her for us....

Hi Adm,
Both of my girls (15mo and 4yr) came down with a virus last week. I took them to the drs because they had the temp, loss of appetite, and headaches. Turns out they had Hand,Foot, Mouth virus (apparently very common this time of year in kids under 10yr). It is also very contagious. My 15mo was feverish and cranky for about 2 1/2 - 3days and my 4yr old is going on her 5th day and just starting to feel a little better. This virus also causes blisters in the mouth, which can be very sore, but a 17 mo cannot tell you that. All I can say is keep the fluids coming and be as loving and patient as you can (easier said than done - I KNOW!!). But she will get through this and as long as the fever goes down with the Tylenol, then it will pass - hopefully it has done so by the time you read this post.
Good luck!

yeah, i have to say friday noon my daughter started getting wrapped up in a blanket. it was 90F outside. i checked her temp and it was 101.1. very warm to touch. i gave her one dose of motrin (off brand) and she didn't get any more fevers. now, i did drive to the ped's office to see there were a million people waiting and the lady at check-in said it will be a 2-3 hr wait. we drove back. thank god we did because she never got another fever. she has been eating poorly but drinking plenty of fluids. so i'd say give her ibuprofen (works much better than tylenol), and keep fluids going. my daughter has been drinking lots of soups, drinking water and eating watermellon.

It's our first day with fever for my 2 1/2 yo son. He was just fine yesterday but this morning woke up burning (101.9) and very lethargic. I gave him one dose of Motrin and he's up and running now. I'm not sure we're in the clear, but that's why I came here, to see if anyone is reporting similar cases.
