Vitamin B6 During Pregnancy?

I am 9 weeks pregnant & I've had terrible sickness so my doctor said to take Vitamin B6 supplements 25-50mg 4 times per day and unisom at night to help. Well, the only kind I found at the store was 200mg vitamin B6. Is that too much? My husband says 4 times a day 50 mg equals 200 so I should be fine, but to me it just seems like too much. Any advice?

What can I do next?

200 mg at once won't hurt you, but I wonder if taking smaller doses multiple times daily will keep your nausea in better check all day, vs having you feel good for 4-6 hours while your body is digesting it and then nauseous again for the next 18 hours until it's time for another dose? Check another store for smaller dosings.

Ask your doctor how to take it. I never leave a dr's appt without instructions on how to take any medicine.

I agree that 200mg in one dose is too much. It's true that the body excretes what B vitamins it doesn't need, but sometimes that throws the delicate balance of the other nutrients out of balance. Ask your Dr if she/he knows where you can find a smaller dose B6 or consider taking only part of a B6 tablet. Hope you feel better soon. Morning sickness is usually the worst around 9-10 weeks and then it decreases slowly over the next month.

I have to take additional folic acid and I ended up buying it 4 times than what I needed so what I do is I break the pill up and take a quarter of it.

Talk with a pharmacist. He may be able to get the smaller sized dose for you.

I agree with Diana P. but you could also ask the pharmacist about it to be sure.

the reason the doctor said a lower dose was because taking it all at once is less effective when dealing with nausea than spreading them out. I was told that You can not overdose on B6, I take significantly more than 200mg a day for other reasons while pregnant. But just ask at the pharmacy, often they have different things behind the counter, or they can explain if you can cut the pills in half and at least spread the 200mg between two doses.

I took that dosage along with my unisom at night and I was fine. My doctor told me to take it in the evening.
