Vomitting in the Early Morning

I have a 9 yr. old who will vomit first thing in the morning.
He does this about once a week, sometimes more.
Changing his eating habits at night has not really made a
difference. What should I do?

What can I do next?

This happens w/ my 4 yo but not so frequently. I've noticed that it seems to be worse when she's suffering w/ post nasal drip. I suspect she ends up w/ a stomach full of mucus which is irritating and causes her to throw up. Just a guess from observation though.

get him checked out. there has to be a reason for his vomiting. I just recently heard that vomitting can be a symptom to some very definate problems.

Strange! My daughter did the same thing once week for about 2 months. Same day of the week and between 4 a.m. and six a.m. every time. No prior symptoms, and when she awoke the 2nd time she felt fine. We finally took her to the DR. and they found no apparent reason. Food was never the same prior now cut out allergy. STRESS was the only thing we could think of. It cleared up on its own. I know this isn't really an answer but just letting you know you're not alone

Does this coincide with something at school, i.e., a certain class, project, tests, teacher, child? He could be anxious about something.

I knew a guy who did this in high school and it was stress/anxiety.

I'd try to find out if there's something upsetting him. My first thought when I read your post is that he may be anxious and stressed about something regarding school - school work, a bully, a conflict with a friend or teacher. I'd also give your pediatrician a call. Good luck!

does he take childrens vitamins in the morning? one of my daughters was throwing up a few times a week, in the morning only, and usually in the car on the way to school... i thought it was motion sickness, but when i asked the pediatrician about it, she suggested giving her the vitamins with dinner instead... and she hasnt thrown up in the morning since. hope he feels better!!

Has this been going on for a while? Does he vomit only once, or does he vomit repeatedly? It might be cyclic vomitting syndrome. At any rate, call your pediatrician!

This could be a sign of a VERY serious condition. Please take your child to the doctor ASAP.

I agree with those who said to go to a Dr ASAP. You may need to get a referral for a GI doctor. Also look into cyclic vomitting syndrome. I understand that triggers and how that plays out are different for each child. I'm positive my son was having that play a big role for him. Once I figured out what it was (thanks to many awesome moms on mamasource!) I was able to alter his routine, and he hasn't had a problem since. I now know his triggers and the early signs of it, so I can stop it at the beginning. Good luck!

When I was very young I had to immediately have a glass of oj the minute I work up becasue of low sugar levels. If I did not I would throw-up. Not sure if this helps but an easy thing to try.
