B., I am not sure of the answer to this other than to start a home based business. I am interested in hearing the responses because I am home with my 2 girls and would like to work p/t to bring in extra income for our family.
I really want to be able to stay at home, or more, that I want to work part-time, but I don't know of anything that I can do to make at least $20K a year. I am educated and have a job now, but I really want to be able to spend more time with my son. I was thinking a teacher's aid or going to cosmetology school, something like that. I am not interested in the work from home sales such as BeautiControl, Arbonne, or anything like that. Does anyone have any ideas or is/has anyone been in this situation before?
Thanks!

don't we all? :) I am now staying at home and getting a little nervous about how much less money is coming in.... What is your degree in? That may get my ideas going better.
I thought of cleaning for some friends...that way you could take your little on with you....Walking people's dogs (get your excersize and still with the baby) I think subbing is better than being a TA b/c TA is really full time and subbing you can pick your days. But, you will still have to find childcare. I was a teacher and have no one for childcare. Wake county only pays like 60 bucks a day! :( So, it really isn't worth the money to do that either.
You could put something on Creig's List to do part time babysitting. I have a friend that tried that just to see, and was amazed at how many people she found. Actually you could do Creig's List for whatever you decide.
Good luck and Blessings. I can't wait to see other ideas you get! Thanks for writing!

A part time job is definitely an option (maybe delivering newspapers or a school crossing guard). But there are other ways to help make staying at home more workable. Like maybe downscaling to a smaller house? Selling a car with a big payment and getting a used one you can pay off? And I don't know what type of work you're in, but you may find that your current employers will let you have a part time position or work at home, depending on the type of work you do? We had an adjustable rate mortgage that was getting ready to increase, so we refinanced for a fixed to make our payment low and keep it constant. I think you'll be surprised at ways you can cut back to save money. I know we save a ton of money in gas now that I don't have a 1/2 hour commute each day. And some SAHM's really tap into talents they haven't used in a while when they stay home (like sew cloth diaper inserts or clothes, making soaps). Good luck with your decision!
How about keeping a few other children in your home? Or substitute teacher?
