Want to Go Gray

Okay, this is a little different take on the hair coloring scenario. I have been coloring my hair for years and years. I am at a stage in my life now where I've decided I'd like to go au naturel. Problem is that I don't have the patience for the couple of years it would take to let my own hair grow out. Well, that and my hair would be hideous looking in the interim. A few months ago I asked a colorist if she could color my hair in some way so that it would look gray while the real thing grows in but didn't get a good answer. I'm pretty sure she thought I was nuts. Has anyone else done this or have a solution or a colorist that could keep me from looking too weird? Thanks all you moms!!

I grew out my hair a couple of years ago with no interim coloring. I have always preferred longish hair and just suffered through the hideous roots line. Looking back, I wish I had just gotten a really short cut and let it grow. It was hard. Whenever I think of coloring my hair again, I remember what a pain it was to grow it out. Never again!

Technically... the best thing to do would be to ****gradually**** work yourself blonde.

2 ways to do this:

- All over color, gradually going lighter and cooler each time.
- Foiling or (darn I'm going to spell this wrong... so I'll do it phonetically instead) bay-oh-lauz-sh where you start getting lighter (all the way to platinum) highlights put in. This works best if you're not solid silver/white, and takes about a year. What it does is blends in the dyed hair and your natural color, until you're au naturel.

:) Have fun!!

I did this a few years ago. I don't know how long your hair is but if it is medium to long, get a cute short cut and just let it go. It will grow out in a shorter time if you have short hair.

I got so many compliments on my au naturel hair and continue to be complimented to this day. As the color grows out you can grow out your hair to a new style.

Go for it!! You will LOVE the new you! Check out my website for a picture or my FB page.

Dear S.,
I have light blonde hair and I loved coloring it darker.
The only downside....I had roots in reverse.
And, I'm going gray but with my light hair, it's hard to tell which is which.
You should be able to find a good colorist that can help you transition.
I think gray hair is awesome. I don't see it as an age thing.
Beautiful silver hair runs in my family and I actually look forward to it.
I think it's pretty.

Anyway, get the advice of another colorist because they can thread colors into your hair while it grows out and it can look really great in the meantime.

Best wishes!

I'm a stylist and there are different ways to do this.

It depends on your color and how much grey you already have though.

First, I would recommend to get either low-lights or hi-lights (depending on your coloring) through well placed foils to blend your colored hair color into your natural regrowth. As time goes by, the foils become less prominent until you can eventually stop as the color grows out.

I have also cut a woman's hair off at the gray line, she loved it!

this website has some great advice on greying and how to care for gray hair!:

http://www.virtualhaircare.com/virtual%20salon/what%27s%2...

"This really depends on the base of the hair colour when you make the decision to go "GREY GRACEFULLY".
We have had a lot of success by using the highlighting technique and turning it into a gradual process which can take a few visits and up to 6 months. This is best suited to hair that is light brown or lighter. What we initially do is a full head of highlights, bringing the hair to a very light pale blonde. We then tone with a "SILVER" based toner this will eliminate any yellow from the hair immediately. The idea here is to give the appearance of more grey hair than what is already there. This will make it a lot easier to grow out, as we lose that regrowth line pretty much straightaway'.

'On darker hair we have had success with low-lighting the regrowth area on the parting whilst allowing the rest of the hair to grow out. At a certain point the hair starts to look a little dull and here we start to introduce the aid of semi-permanant colours which we use as a camoflauge to the white hair. The advantage of this is that the colour fades out and allows the natural hair to grow through. Be careful though as, going too dark or being in unskilled hands can cause colour build-up and really defeat the purpose of going grey.
And finally the natural way. CUT YOUR HAIR SHORT and in 2 cuts your colour is gone. As drastic as this sounds, women who have grey hair always look sensational when they have a short striking haircut. There is nothing like this. Truly sensational'!"

Another option is to use a haircolor like Wella's Color Touch with a low volume developer. It has decent grey coverage in that it adds some color to your hair, but still allows some of the grey to show through. Basically, it creates a nice and natural blend.

I colored my hair for years and then wanted to go back to my normal hair color before my hair started turning grey - not quite the same - but Jonna owner Heath Hair (Rockwall County) can fix it perfectly for you. That way as your color grows out you won't have a two toned look and it will be beautiful. She is also a Redkin Specialist - give her a call... she is great - I promise.

How long have you ever gone between colorings? My grey is so stubborn that it loses all color after about 4 months. It is silver from root to tip. If you have never waited 4 months or so, try it and see if all the color falls off your grey.

Then all you have to do is have your hair stylist color your hair to exactly match your natural color. Then, as it grows out, there are no root lines. My stylist is fabulous and can match your color perfectly. Then, it just gradually becomes grey as the color wears off but no root lines!

If you need somebody, try Kim Webb at Salon Boutique in Frisco there by the mall. Let me know if you want her number, I can go find it.

when my mom decided to take the color out of her hair she had been gray a long time i was about 16 when she did it and she was so depressed after word because stripping the color out turned her hair glow orange. it was pretty bad. i have no suggestion on how to do it but dont just go have the color stripped. my moms hair eventually went to all grey and it is beautiful white hair she keeps it long and everyone loves it. good luck :)

I'm sure there are lots of possibilities in terms of dyes - talk to another colorist. Or, you can just cut your hair short and do it quickly - and get a new hairstyle in the process! :)
Good luck!
