Hi Ladies,
My daughter is potty trained, but still wears a nappy at night. It's mostly never wet, and I just can't stand buying them anymore. I am about to buy her a big girl bed, and am thinking of putting on a waterproof mattress pad. Do you guys have any suggestions - good and bad? Some seem quite expensive. I don't want one that is really plasticky and noisy. I haven't looked at any, just seen them on the net, so haven't felt any. I apprecaite all your wisdom!
Thanks in advance,
K.

I bought my son's at JCPenney. I bought it from their web site www.jcpenney.com. It works great and is soft, doesn't have that "crunchy" noise that most waterproof items have.

I got some really nice (and cheap) ones from Target, they have a gel type material in them which also gives some padding and they're machine washable. I think they were $15 a piece maybe???
good luck!

After looking at a ton we decided on the ones from IKEA and we just love them! They wash really well (ours have both been washed multiple times already) and are comfortable to sleep on. They don't make any noise that I've noticed. The price is also right for them. We have a full size bed and the waterproof pads are about $18 each. Good luck to you!

We bought a zippered plastic mattress cover at WalMart that cost about $5. I put it on the mattress, then covered it with a quilted mattress cover. I put a heavy flexible/soft piece of plastic... it has fibers woven into it... just large enough to fit under the child and catch any wetness from an accident in between the sheet and the mattress protector. The children don't even notice it's there, and I can't even feel it enough to remember that it's there sometimes. The extra plastic piece means I normally will have only the bottom sheet to wash (and wipe down that plastic piece of course). In the case a child wets more and the mattress pad gets wet too, at least the plastic mattress cover protects the mattress from getting wet.

Even if she never wets the bed - she may throw up in it or spill juice she snuck into bed if she's anything like my 5 year old!
I sold bedding & linens during college and I'm a very hot sleeper so I can't stand the plasticky stuff either. I found a zippered mattress cover for my son's bed that is supposed to keep allergens out of the mattress and it's waterproof. It's a thin material that feels more like those disposable painter's coveralls than plastic. It's held up great for 3 years so far and really is waterproof! I put a nice 100% cotton quilted mattress pad with polyester padding (cotton padding gets hard and lumpy after washing)
over the zippered thing. I reccommend you spen a little more $ and find a mattress pad that has rows of elastic all the way around the sides - stays on the bed even if someone is jumping on it! If the bed is Twin or Full size you can find great prices on bedding at a discount store like Ross or Marshall's or Burlington Coat Factory because they are the least popular sizes and usually have lots of left-overs. Get an extra mattress pad for accidents or flu season. The zippered cover can be wiped down with a disinfectant for an emergency bedding change and is machine washable too.
The waterproof mattress pads are 100% polyester and treated with chemicals so they are hot and itchy to sleep on. I noticed they tend to pill and look yucky after just a few washes.

I got a soft waterproof mattress pad at The Mattress Warehouse for under $60. It was thinner than the ones I got online for over $100. But it works well. This is for full/queen size.

We got ours for our kids at JC Penney. Check out the website for reviews ... you'll learn which ones are noisy or plasticky and which ones are ideal. They have some that aren't very expensive and that have deep pockets that work on thick mattresses. We've been very happy with the ones from JC Penney.

I bought mine at Ikea and they are great! The top feels like terry cloth and they don't make noise so no one seems to notice.

I was worried about the plastic-y noise aspect, too so I got a cover at www.onestepahead.com. It's partial mattress cover specifically for keeping the mattress dry. Just wraps around & tucks under the mattress. Absorbant & washes well. I used the same one for both our boys who are 4.5 yrs apart so it lasted a long time. But I got tired of this a few months ago & finally broke down & bought a plasctic cover at amazon. Can't remember the name but it waa about $25 & has been GREAT! Quiet & comfy. I know cuz sometimes I have to cuddle w/our youngest at bedtimes & I don't hear anything.

My son has one, and we got it inexpensively at Walmart. It is plastic on the underside, and a soft quilted pattern on top. It has never leaked through to his mattress, and is not noisy, smelly, etc. I wash it in the washer and dry it in the dryer.

I bought this one from Naturepedic for my daughter. She has pretty bad dust mite allergies so I really didn't want to go with anything plastic that would trap moisture. I've been very happy with it. Cotton, sturdy, washes fine in hot water. It's not quilted or cushy.

Hi K.!
When we moved our son to his "big boy" bed, we used a regular mattress pad protector and then bought some overnight pads to place under the sheet. I think they are actually for incontinence but my sister, who works in a hospital suggested them and they work great. You can buy them at CVS (I would suggest getting the XL ones) for about $9 for a pack of 35 or so. If my son ever leaks, it soaks through the sheet and onto the pad but never onto the mattress. When you change the sheet, you can toss the pad and replace it with another one. Might be another inexpensive option you can try while you are still are phasing your daughter out of her nappy. :)

I did this with my son...I wasn't planning on potty training, but I was sick of paying for diapers. I did buy one of the cheap plastic covers, but I had a soft cover to put over it, which made it comfy and quiet (we have since upgraded to the nicer covers). I double sheeted his bed, with crib pads under the sheets. When there was an accident, it was simply a matter of stripping off a layer and throwing it in the wash. It was a lot easier than making the bed. And it was less traumatic for my son. We changed him quickly ( I would leave out extra jammies and undies, so we weren't doing a 2 a.m. search) and got him back in bed fast. He potty trained himself at night in about two weeks, which was really nice and not expected!

Ordered the above from amazon. It is perfect. My daughter has had an accident yet, but the dang cat decided she needed to mark her territory and thank goodness I had this on the bed plus it's not that expensive.

We have waterproof mattress pads on all the beds in our house. As a result, our mattresses are very clean. I bought mine at Bed, Bath, and Beyond but I think the last one I bought there did have the plastic-y sound and I returned it. The good thing about BBB is they have a generous return policy. I believe they run about $50 - $75 but they last forever. I can't remember where I got my last one, after the one from BBB didn't work out. It might have been online from The Company Store. Good-luck!

I bought two "saddle style" mattress covers and I love them. They are only about 2 feet long and tuck under the mattress on the sides. They are very absorbent and not noisy at all. I think I got them from babycenter.com and they were very reasonably priced. Since they aren't that big, it's very easy to wash and dry them in the washer and dryer.

I buy the really cheep waterproof mattress cover and then buy a medium to lower priced mattress pad. The mattress cover completely enclosed the mattress. It is plastic and can be a little noisy. I like the security of it though. We had lice a couple of years ago and I did not have to worry about the mattress (just everything else :) ).

We got a brand new mattress (queen size). Then, we got a puppy. We went to Target and got a waterproof mattress pad for less than $40 ($30, if I recall correctly). It wasn't plasticky or anything to begin with, but since we had already bought a regular (non-waterproof) pad, we put the waterproof one on under the regular mattress pad for extra protection. It has been on there for 3 or 4 months now, and we have never once taken note of it (except when we wash the regular pad and actually see it).

Luckily, the puppy has been much better than expected, and we have never needed the waterproof pad. But with our first baby on the way, we're keeping it on the bed (again, we've never noticed it!! I don't know if that's partially because of the other pad on top, but like I said, the waterproof one wasn't plasticky or crinkly to begin with), and I feel relieved knowing that we're still preserving the mattress a little better! :)

Anyhow, just saying there are very inexpensive options out there (if that's a consideration), which are probably available locally for you to go feel before buying. Best of luck!! :)

I love love love these cotton waterproof pads from babies r us. They are machine washable and come in different sizes. The biggest I have is about the size of a crib mattress. I just put one under the sheet and one over and if he leaks I usually just have to replace the one on top. I keep about 6 that I rotate through the wash. So simple. Not too many bed changes.
