Hey moms. I'm about to move my almost two year old out of his toddler bed (with his crib mattress) into a twin sized bed with a regular mattress. I pride myself in making the comfy-est beds and I always use a cotton mattress pad for breathability. Am I really gonna want to use a waterproof pad for him right now??? Or something simple like cotton???? I imagine accidents at night will become a regular thing once potty training starts...
You might also want to buy some large waterproof pads and use them along w/a waterproof mattress pad for extra protection!
Here's what I do...I bought a vinyl/waterproof mattress cover and then I bought 2 regular quilted mattress pads. It was a bit of money up front, but well worth it in the end! Plus, I have 3 sets of sheets for my daughter's bed. I only had 2 but then I found one super cheap on super clearance and figured why not...but I do feel at least 2 is a necessity. I have the vinyl on on all the time to protect the mattress. I put the regular one on top of it so you can't hear the rustling of the platic one. This way if she has an accident, spills water or vomits, it's easy 1-2-3 clean up. I dry the vinyl, swap the mattress pad and change the sheets...viola!
Also, just wanted to say that night training, at least for our daughter was not bad at all! She was practically night trained immediately. We waited until she was just a month away from her 3rd birthday and she was TOTALLY ready. Potty training is a whole other post ;) but I just wanted to say that it's possible for it to be really easy. She has never had a nightime accident where I've had to change her sheets in the middle of the night, not to say it won't happen, but so far so good!
Yes, buy a waterproof cover! Don't buy a cheap plastic one--they don't stay on the bed and they make noise when the child rolls around in bed. Buy a cotton one with waterproof capabilities. We got ours for about $40. Recently, our 2 year old (who is not potty trained, but sleeps in a twin bed) woke up throwing up. The mattress pad cover saved the mattress from puke!
we got a waterproof one from Walmart and her bed is still super comfy to lay on.
I am potty training in stages and it's working fantastic! First, pee in the potty during the day. Second, pee and poo in the potty during the day. Finally, potty train at night. Up until that point she is in pull ups at night. She does sleep with a cotton protector under her sheet so if there's a leak or something her bed is protected. It's worked great. Good luck!
I put a waterproof mattress pad directly over the mattress and a cotton one over the top for comfort. You really don't want your mattress to get saturated with urine. However, I see no need for the waterproof pad before he is out of night diapers.
YES... get a waterproof bed pad.
It is a MUST.
My kids are 4 and 8... and I STILL use it and it REALLY is a lifesaver.
I got mine from Amazon. I have 4 of them. I prefer the "quilted" type bed pads.
I put the bed pad DIRECTLY under my kids... NOT under the fitted sheets. AND clean up is MUCH easier that way and I never... ruin my/their bedding that way.

The "waterproof" covers I bought at Target don't work at all. We have 3 of these mattress protectors (between my 2 kids' bunk beds), and they have saved us more nights than I can count. They are AWESOME. Just put one of these over the sheet when they're first w/o diapers/pull-ups at night. Then, you don't even have to change the sheets! It holds 2 cups of water & it's big enough that we've never had a problem with any urine going on the sheet instead of the pad. After you feel that they're not likely to have an accident, move it to under the sheet (but over the mattress pad).

You definitely want to use a waterproof mattress pad. I got one a few years ago at JCPenney that is soft and doesn't seem to have that plasticy noise or feel. Sorry I don't know which brand I got.
Hi L. - yes you are definitely going to want a waterproof mattress pad. Dont go cheap however. I found some nice ones with a quilted top at Walmart that were around $30 each.
