My three year old is potty trained during the day but still working on night time. I am looking for a twin sized mattress pad protector thing. : ). I have him a diaper at night but many times it leaks through onto the bed. What have you used that works great? I want something that won't make him hot and sweaty and I definately don't want anything that makes the rustle-rustle plasticy sound. Suggestions please.

What can I do next?

I use a regular plastic cover over the mattress not only on my dd's bed, but our bed....I do this because of allergens in the mattress (allergists orders).

I don't notice it at all...it doesn't make that rustle noise. I use a cloth mattress cover over the plastic, then the sheets over that.

I just got one at Wal-mart...nothing fancy.

I also use 2 pads - the vinyl/plasticy one directly on the mattress so nothing gets through and then a thick "waterproof" pad on top of that. I have found that no cotton "waterproof" pad is truly pee proof.

I used a flat crib pad - don't know if they still make them. It didn't tuck in but it covered the essential area, and it was super easy to change because it didn't tuck in! I even put down a twin sheet, then the waterproof pad (it's the size of the crib mattress) and then another twin sheet on top. If things got wet, it was easy to strip the wet sheet and then the waterproof pad, leaving a dry twin sheet underneath. So it was easy to strip off the wet pajamas in the middle of the night, do a quick wipe off, and throw my son back in the bed on a clean and dry sheet.

Good luck.

This is a topic that I have a lot more experience than I want. Son is 7 and still a bed wetter 3 out of 7 nights. We are down from 7 out of 7 nights. :0)

Anyway...here is my recommendation....get these mattress overlays from the bed wetting store...they are the absolute best. You put them over the sheets...then when the bed wetting occurs...pull off the overlay without changing the sheets! A real time saver and helps you from having to get up in the middle of the night and do a full bed change.

The overlays are a bit pricey ($30) but well worth the $. We origninally bought two so that we could do a change in the middle of the night. Now we have about 6 of them. For a twin bed, get the large or extra large size so that you can tuck them in so that they stay flat and tucked in - incase your son moves around at night.

After overlays get peed on...just throw in the washer with pjs and use laundry soap and a cup of vinegar..I wash in hot water...do not use fabric softner.

I do a fabric mattress pad then a thin quilty blanket then the fitted sheet.
Then one more thin quilty blanket topped w/a fitted sheet.
So there were 2 layers.

If his pee leaked through the diaper at night, I would just have to go take one set of fitted sheet/quilty blanket off.

Well, that worked for a long time at first.

Now I have a mattress pad, quilty thin blanket then fitted sheet.
If he pees out, I just throw them all into the wash.

Then I make his bed w/the spare sheets & quilty thing.

I used 2 mattress pads. The first one was the true plastic one then on top I put a high quality thick cotton pad so my daughter would not get overheated and hear that rustling sound.
FYI... Due to allergies I still keep them both on the bed.

Biologically, it can take until 7 years old for night time dryness to occur.
Even later for some kids. And this is normal.
Day and night pottying/bladder control is not the same thing.

I have 4 waterproof bed pads, the "quilted" cotton fabric types, that I got from Amazon. It does NOT make my kids hot, because it is not plastic. And it does not make rustling noises. My kids never had a problem with it. It is comfy. And it has been waterproof.
I have had them since my kids were babies. And it is still in good shape.
I have 4, because, it then allowed me to rotate them out as needed. The sheets do NOT get soiled... because I put the pad DIRECTLY under my child... not under the sheet.

I still use the waterproof bed pad, under my 5 year old son. Why? Because he is not dry at night, yet. And he is still with a night time diaper. My daughter was at that age as well. Then as my daughter got closer to 6 years old, her body/bladder control got developed.

Target. I got one for my kiddo that is cotton. It looks just like a regular mattress pad, not plastic. Even though we are past the potty training stage (6yrs old) it's still on her bed. It's come in handy for water spills and middle of the night throw ups.

We use a terrycloth and cellulose? one from SleepCountryUSA.

Not plastic at all... You can cover your mouth and nose and BREATHE through it... But it's completely waterproof. And soft. And silent. And no sweaty.

Loved HIS so much that we got them for our bed, the guest bed, and trundle. Best. Mattress. Protectors. Ever.

Wet dog? No problem. Aunt flow? No worries. Stomach flu? Foh'gedda'bou'dit!! Sweaty husband comes back from gym and takes a disgusting nap before showering? No need to smell the stank for he next few weeks. No semen stains, no how many times have I told you not to put your wet towel on the bed, no pee accidents. No breast milk puddles going sour, no mothers day breakfasts in bed gone wrong...

Our mattresses are 6 years old, snow white, and smell like towels out of the dryer.

LOVE these things!!!

I put the plastic liner on then a quilted mattress protector I have the Target brand has been washed many times and in great condition then the fitted sheet, when peed on during the night all I do is strip it all except the liner and use a Lysol wipe just in case it smells but have never noticed it to leak onto the mattress itself, and I have also taken the liner off after wiping it with a rag of soapy water let air dry.I have also put an inbetween protection like another blanket or pads from the hospital, right now I have a liner from my MIL to protect where she sleeps I put that onto of the mattres then the plastic liner

My daughter is 4 and is fully potty trained but I still have a plastic mattress cover and the quilted cover. You hardly notice the rustling sound if you buy a good one. For my son who is 10 months I have the plastic and the quilted cover plus they sell night time removable pads that I add for extra protection. This is if he spits up or diaper leaks I just remove the extra pad and the rest is still dry and clean. This way I am not stripping the whole crib all the time. It works great. I forget the name but they come in a package of 9. They stick on 4 sides and you just pull off the sheet and the pad and everything else stays dry.

You're better off with a plain old mattress protector. I got one at K-Mart, was definitely better quality than one I bought at Walmart....Just make sure you get a good one that's not paper thin....My son still peed through the mattress pad...Now, I don't even bother with the whole, putting new sheets on routine...He just lays on top of the comforter and covers up with a sheet...That way, all I have to do is watch the comforter in the a.m....Rarely ever leaks onto the protector but if it does, all I do is spray it with a cleaner and wipe the plastic..I find it allot easier...

JC Penney carries a really good one. It's hard to tell it's even waterproof, but it works.

Also, I don't know if you've seen, but GoodNights now makes an adhesive pad that you can put right over sheets at night. We're using a waterproof mattress pad as well as these new GoodNights pads with our daughter (she's six, but still hasn't mastered nighttime yet). They're pricey but make it really nice with the accidents ... you just peel off the wet pad and toss it.

For both of my kids we got the thin matters bag that the whole mattress goes into and then a regular mattress pad on top of that. My son sleeps on the same bed set my daughter started off with which is now 10 yrs old and that mattress still looks as new as the day I bought it!!
You can get them at Walmart for cheap too.
