There are SO many photographers out there. What we did was set up an engagement shoot first and it helped us get to know the photographer, and see if we liked the style. We tried two different photographers and it was a no brainer when we saw the results. (I think we spent 100 - 150 for the 'engagement' shoot.. it was pretty cheap)

$4,000 sounds like the top-of-the-line for wedding photographers; and they're probably very good too. I would say she needs to do some more shopping around. We paid $1,600 and loved our photos. If there is one thing on the wedding day not to scrimp on, it's the photos. There is no second-chance and those photos are forever. There are so many things about weddings that can cost so much money because there are people out there who associate higher costs with finer things. If you want to pay $10,000 for a wedding dress you can; but a $500 dress is just as beautiful and nobody will know how much you paid for it unless you flaunt that yourself (which I think those snooty rich people want to). I think people pay more because they want to impress there guests with how much money they spent.
