Week Long Fever

My 10yo son started with a high (102/103)fever last thursday. Gave him advil and it effectively broke the fever only to return (103) once the advil wore off. Sat he complained on a sore throat and was still running that fever. Sunday he was coughing (very croupy sounding) because of his throat hurting.

Monday I stopped with the advil since it would completely erase the fever, and just stuck with tylenol which only brought his temp down a degree or so, was also doing the cooling fever patches, cool bath/showers, ect. Got him into the Pedi, (son's temp was 100.2 at the visit -feverish but not bad) And the pedi just basically confirmed that there wasn't anything more going on but what I saw - no strep, no ear infections, no sinus infections... nothing. Pedi suggested I continue with what i was doing and that he should be getting better soon.

Its now wednesday. Son is still spiking temps at 103 when I'm "not watching" (when the tylenol wears off after 4 hours)... still running around 100/101. Still with the sore throat, pretty much woke up every two hours because of this throat last night and would cough and cough.

I'll put in a call to the pedi tomorrow... but anyone here have suggestions? I'd hate to spend another $40 to have him seen again just to be sent home! (even if it does confirm that I'm right and boost my ego as a good mom, lol)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well its noon and it seems that the fever is gone. (he was still sleep when i wrote the question) and I haven't given him anything since before the sun came up. Still with that cough although he's not complaining as much about his throat and is actually drinking more things and starting to eat without me nagging him.

And no the dr. didn't do a throat culture on monday because his tonsils looked alright (not puffy) and his entire throat wasn't red, just down the larynx. So if i can tame that cough, then he's going back to school tomorrow!

Update (thurs): we're going back into the doctor this morning. I had forgotten that I had given him advil sometime the night before and couldn't even tell you what time, but shortly after 1pm his temp spiked at 103.4. Brought it back down to 100.2 and then made a new dr appoint for this morning. Had another night of coughing fits and little sleep. I'm soo tired.

Back from the dr. (thurs) Pedi diagnosed a sinus infection and prescribed amoxicillian. He said that there is differently signs of one now (whereas monday there really wasn't the puffiness), Throat still looked fine , lungs were still clear. So it was probably the virus everyone has been coming down with and progressed into the sinus infection. bummer. At least he will be feeling better for the weekend and hopefully catch up on missed school work.
Thanks moms.

D., My twins (3yo) came down with this over a month ago. My DH and I have it as well. It is pretty miserable. There is a virus going around that starts with high fevers and sore throats that breaks after a week or so and then you are left with a caugh and just not feeling 100% for weeks. It has been a month today that I started with the symptons and woke up this am again slightly stuffed up and my chest feeling heavy. Dr. can't give you anything to combat it, just tells us to take some over the counter allergy & sinus meds to get the nasal drip to stop. Good Luck and I hope he is feeling better soon.

I personally would call and let the doctor or nurse know what is going on, he still isn't better, still has a fever, etc and let them decide if you need to be seen again. If it were me, I would call today and at least speak with the nurse or leave a message for them to call you back today about it.

I would call the nurse at the pedi's office to see if they think you should bring him in. If the doc said Monday that there was nothing he could do then probably two days hasn't changed much. My pedi's nurses usually tell me what the protocol is and whether I should wait it out a couple days or not.

one thing I've done that's helped bring down and keep down fevers is to rotate between Tylenol and Advil. So if you can take each one ever 6 hours, then you give a different one every 3 hours instead. Make sense? That way you are still giving him Tylenol every 6 hours. But you're also giving him Advil every 6 hours. It'd look like this:
8am: Tylenol
11am: Advil
2pm: Tylenol
5pm: Advil
8pm: Tylenol
11pm: Advil

Do you trust your pedi? Perhaps take him to your family doctor for a second opinion.

Well, here in Austin there is a virus going around with symptoms of a fever, sore throat, upset stomach and it lasts for five days and apparently very contagious. Both my 6 month old and my 3 year old had it last week. Doctor said if the fever lasts more than 5 days then to bring them in. I took my 6 month old in after having the fever for more than a day since she seemed to be eating and playing normal. Doc said there was nothing much you can do other than keep the temperature down and give them plenty of fluids.

I would take him back. Poor guy, fevers are miserable. A week long with that high of a fever is a long time. Granted, if its a virus nothing will help but I would want more answers. I've taken my baby in on a monday and strep test was clear. Still fever on thurs and the strep showed up. If he were mine just to be safe I would take him!

You just described my 9 yr old! We wnt to the pediatrician yesterday and they said they've been seeing a lot of kids with this within the last week and a half. There isn't anything you can do except let it run it's course. Of course if your son needs Tylenol/advil for discomfort then give it to him and if he seems to be getting better then takes a turn for the worse take him in because you could be looking at a secondary infection developing like an ear or sinus infection for example.

Edited: glad he's feeling better by the looks of it my son is going to miss the rest of the week :(

Hello, I hope the doctor did a culture on your son's throat. Without that I wouldn't be sure it wasn't strep. He certainly seems to have some kind of infection. I think that is why he is running a fever for so long. Either way, I would have him re-evaluated.
Good luck with your precious son.
