Hi, my husband and I are planning a much-needed getaway in April. We live in Seattle and since we only have the weekend are looking for somewhere to drive or train to. Any ideas? We are right now thinking of taking the train to Portland. Any advice on where to stay? Any other places you'd recommend? Thank you!

I don't know exactly how far away you wanted to go, but here's my suggestion. My inlaws (all 6 of them) were here last Thanksgiving and we found a stunning house on the water in Manchester (we live in Port Orchard) so it wasnt' to far from our house. I mean this house is amazing. And not too awful spendy. Here is the website where I found it, I used to have pictures she sent me of the inside but apparently I deleted them. The owner is super nice and responds quickly to emails. Good luck and enjoy your get away.

My fiance and I stayed at the Chrysalis Inn and Spa in Bellingham for our anniversary last year and loved it. We had a view of the water, a nice room, a nice dinner and even took a romantic sunset cruise on a catamaran (http://www.gatoverde.com/PageID/145/default.aspx). It was a great weekend trip for us and it's only a 2 hour drive. Not sure what your budget is, but I would at least check it out: http://www.thechrysalisinn.com/

Good luck!

The train is great. Stay downtown. There are several nice hotels and check out the spa's and shopping with no sales tax. Google downtown Portland. You will have a blast. Victoria, BC is very romantic. My husband and I took the clipper up and back.

My husband, kids and I stayed at the Hotel Monaco in downtown Portland for New Years Eve and it was awesome! They have a "happy hour" each night in the lobby that was great! The rooms are beautiful, the beds are super comfy, they have Aveda bath products :), the staff is outstanding and you can even get a goldfish in your room if you want! And of course being downtown you can walk to so many places!!

I've also heard that the Governor Hotel is really nice!

If you want to stay in Washington go to the Salish Lodge... it's a little spendy but SOOOOO worth it! Their rooms ROCK! It's been about 10 years since we've been (pre kids) but I remember it clearly!! Our room had a bead straight out of heaven... the bathroom had a jetted tub and french windows that opened out to our room... a fireplace.. and we had a ground floor room so we could walk out and see the falls. Their restaurant was awesome! We had a spectacular view from our table. I didn't get the chance to use the spa but I can only imagine how wonderful it must be! I HIGHLY recommend it!

We did Portland and had a great time, we took the kids but would go back again by ourselves.

We stayed at the Embassy suites because they have a pool, suana and jauzzi, breakfast buffet and shuttles to drop you most places for free. We took the Max around too or walked to the Chinese gardens that were beautiful and loved the tea house. Or Course we went to Powell's bookstore for hours.

Hope that helps.

We do these jaunts often! We love Coeur d'Alene Idaho, there's Silverwood Theme Park and several water parks. You could go to Ocean Shores, and there's a new hotel/casino/indoor water park with cool family designed rooms in Grand Mound outside of Olympia, it's called Great Wolf Lodge- www.greatwolflodge.com just opened, we'll probably go in May! Portland is fun too or Lake Chelan.

I "second" Coeur d'Alene, ID... It is sooo beautiful there. For our honeymoon we stayed at the Coeur d'Alene Resort and had a great couples massage it was incredible!!! The lake is beautiful and it is such a lovely place to drive around. We have been there in the summer and the winter and love it. Actually we want to move there we loved it so much. It takes about 5 hours to drive there from Seattle maybe a tiny bit more but very worth it. There are also a lot of houses you can rent around the lake if you search on the net. Check out cdavacation.com and also the resort there. Definately worth it!!

I live over on the Kitsap Peninsula, there is fun stuff to do up across the Hood Canal bridge, Port Townsend, Sequim, Port Angeles, The ferry from P.A. to British COlumbia is lovely as well. We also go to Ocean Shores, that is fun too. There are a few ideas.

My husband and I just got back from a weekend in Vancouver, we left our kids with grandma and grandpa and took the train. I really liked the train ride - relaxing, beautiful views, we brought our food with us, played games and read, it was sooo much more fun than driving somewhere. Plus pretty affordable. We were thinking next time we would do a weekend in Portland - also by train. In Vancouver we stayed at the Sutton Place Hotel and I'd recommend that. Only thing was it is a pretty expensive city. We had some good meals out, and nice walks in spite of the weird cold weather and snow. Have fun!

The 5th Avenue Suites is a nice boutique hotel (Kimpton). They have a wine reception in the evening. It's also convenient to their rapid transit system. Portland has lots of fun little neighborhoods for shopping, restaurants, entertainment, etc. There's a restaurant (either Toulouse or Lautrec) that's fabulous! Starting perhaps in May is an outside market w/music, crafts, and food on the river (it might start earlier...you could probably find out online). Have fun!
