I got mine in at 6 weeks postpartum. I had no problem losing all the baby weight with it in and then maintaining my pre-baby weight. So if anything, you could say I lost weight after I got it, I definitely didn't gain.

I gained 30lbs within 6 months, while I was actively trying to lose the last 10lbs (I'd already lost 30, I put it RIGHT back on with Mirena). Had it removed, took 6months for my body to balance out again and finally started losing weight. It really pissed me off that my doc refused to acknowledge that it caused the weight gain. I hadn't changed anything else about my lifestyle except for inserting that damn IUD.

I just went to the doctor last week and discussed getting mirena. I asked about weight gain. She says that mirena does not cause weight gain. She said that most women get mirena are in their late 30s or in their 40s and that is simply when our bodies start to change and metabolism slows down and thus it is normal to gain weight during this time of our lives, but it is not due to mirena. she did openly admit that the depo shot causes weight gain but said studies she has seen with mirena show it does not cause weight gain. I have not personally experienced it so I am not going to be pretending to be an expert on this, I am just sharing what the doctor said since I just had this convo last week. I would go for it but apparently after 2 c-sections my uterus has decided to bunch up and the doc does not think she would be able to insert the IUD.

I've been about the same weight since before my first pregnancy. I've gained a little while pregnant, dropped that plus a little more through breastfeeding, then gained back to my regular weight. I had a Mirena for about 18 months after the first and about two years now after the second. I just figure this is the weight my body likes to be.

Maybe some women are more sensitive to the hormones, even in low doses.

The doctors say its not the birth control that causes people to gain a lot of weight but I disagree, I have gained weight on several kinds of BC over the years. I did the Paraguard because I didn't want anymore hormones in my body. A coworker of mine has gained a lot and has had an uncontrollable appetite since she got her mirena. Another coworker has been dieting so she hasn't gained weight, but hasn't lost any either. I think part of it depends on your body. I'm guessing you have the kind of body that gains weight with certain hormones. I'm sure you don't want to switch as it is NOT a fun procedure...OUCH! But the Paraguard is good for 10 years and has no hormones.
