Hi ladies,
I had my 3rd son almost a year ago and recently found out about the prescription weightloss pill phentermine/adipex. I couldnt get my family dr. to give it to me beacuase he "didnt beleive in it" as he put it. Anywayz, I got a prescription for it from a walk-in urgent care clinic, but because my insurance doesnt cover urgent care visits I had to pay out of pocket for the visit and it wasnt cheap... My question to you ladies is if anyone knows a Dr. that will prescribe it or I also heard that you can get them from some weight loss clinics but have had no luck.... So far I've lost 8lbs in 2weeks and have not had any bad side effects like some people do. Please help! This is great when it comes to supressing appetitie.... Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have found out last week that I have hypothyroidism and was put on synthroi Id,my doctor said that hopefully my slow metabolism will get back to where it needs to be. He is aware that I'm taking phentermine and surprisingly did not lecture me about it. He doesnt believe in it because he says most people who lose weight on it , tend to gain the weight back when they stop taking it. I know its up to me to keep the weight off after i'm taken off the phentermine, and I refuse to go back to that unhealthy weight. Thanks You all for your comments.

Perhaps since your dr. doesn't believe in it there is something to that? I don't know how old you are, but do you remember a couple of years ago (maybe more like 10) when Phen Phen was all the rage. Everybody was taking it, people were dropping pounds left and right...then the side affects started up. Some people died from complications. It was taken off the maket and not seen again. (unless what you are taking is the same thing, but maybe tweeked a little bit). Maybe you haven't had any side affects yet...no one on Phen Phen did either, but maybe you will later.
I say, if your family doctor is not excited about it, then you shouldn't be either. I know 8lbs is a big number in 2 weeks...but there are ways to do that that are healthier than taking a pill. I know, I have done it. (dropped 100lbs in about 9 months...now prego, so have put a bit back on, sigh).
Also, why would an Urgent Care place give a perscription for an appetite suppresent...hmm...that just doesn't sound right to me.

I'd caution you with phentermine. It was 1/2 of the controversial phen/phen combination that was linked to deaths about 10 years ago. Phenformin was removed by the FDA following several health-related issues.

I started my career in pharmaceutical sales selling Xenical (now over the counter in 1/2 strength as Alli). Phentermine was still being prescribed then but was certainly not safe.

You should exercise great caution when using it or any diet pill - the main problem is that most work systemically (meaning they affect the central nervous system). The products are amphetamines and are only to be used short term.

It's a really dangerous way to lose weight, and I agree that there's a good reason your Primary Care physician wouldn't prescribe it. It's actually quite reckless that an Urgent Care physician/practitioner would not knowing your full medical history.

Here's some good information for you to review:

My sis works at a hospital. A female Dr that was pregnant lost all the weight gain & then some when the baby was only about 4-6 months old. I guess this Dr was a little thicker prior to having the baby. So all the nurses asked her what her secret was to lose all the weight & her response was phetremine. There were 6 nurses that went on this, one is my sis, & all have loved it & lost lots of weight. Also my 2 SIL's were on it for quite some time about 4 yrs ago. There are weight loss clinics were we live that give a one month supply for $75.

I don't know one person that has had any problems taking this & I know at least 12 people on it currently. However I am not naive to believe that ANY form of appetite suppressant can't be very dangerous to someone's health. So please watch for ANY signs, your children need/want you around & you don't want to jeapordize yourself just because your not happy with your weight.

I got it from a "fat" doctor in Arlington at Lincoln Square. I took it and lost 20 lbs and got off of it and gained it back. I also, after having a stress test last year, have a permanent "extra" heart beat. I have an irregular heart beat that I didnt have before. I think my prescription was $80, but I decided that I wanted to be there for my children and got off of it.

What is going to happen when you stop taking it?

What if your weight status is indicative of a health condition? Have you had your thyroid checked? Are you missing vital nutrients that your body is trying to compensate for by overeating? Is your heart strong and healthy?

I would be leery of any amphetamine-related diet drug. It's hard to believe an urgent care would prescribe it . . . wow.

Good luck - as someone who is battling the same 20 pounds for 2 years now my heart goes out to you.
