Weighted Blankets for Better Sleep?

Does anyone have any experience with using a weighted blanket to help their kids sleep? I've heard that they can do wonders for kids who have sleep issues. I'm not sure what weight to get for a 7 year old boy.
Suggestions?

What can I do next?

I would imagine that it would help a lot, especially if a child has issues with Sensory Processing Disorder..... some of those kids are "sensory seekers" and work best when wearing a weighted vest or weighted lap pad. Those are the kids that you often see in constant motion... they are seeking sensory information from their environment.... they may be the "rockers" as a child, always rocking themselves to sleep..... they may be the ones that like spinning.....

Up until I became peri-menopausal I LOVED sleeping under a heavy blanket.
I grew up in the cold north and a nice heavy down blanket just always felt right.
It didn't matter if my feet snuck out from under as long as the main blanket was over the rest of me.
When the hot flashes and night sweats started up I had to switch to a light cotton blanket or a sheet - which I got use to eventually.

Me too, I like the weight of a heavy blanket on me so I can imagine a baby would like it too and I've actually put a folded blanket on top of baby when they were swaddled (swaddle first, then folded blanket for weight).

Hmm, interesting. I've never heard of weighted blankets but when I was a kid my grandmother made a quilt for my brother made of denim... old jeans and it was pretty heavy (well, it felt heavy to me cuz I was pretty little). I didn't like it, but he loved it and so did my sister. If you can sew or know someone who does, I bet you could make one or have one made.

I adore a heavy blanket, and so does my oldest. I can't sleep if I don't have enough weight on me. I imagine that it's worth a try.

The sites I've seen have FAQs and you can also contact their customer support to see what might be best. I don't have a weighted blanket specifically, but I do layer my blankets at night so that the afghan my mom made is on top, keeping me snug. Without it, I find it hard to sleep well.

My guy is almost 4 and likes layers of blankets on him, he says it makes him "cozy." He has a knitted cotton throw, a tightly knitted acrylic one, a fleece blanket I made him, and crocheted throw, he uses them all, the cotton one next to him. He wears pajamas and sometimes pj's under a blanket sleeper so I thought it was psychological and that he didn't really need them all to be comfortable and took one away without him noticing (a different one each night) a couple of nights as an experiment. He couldn't sleep so within 30 minutes I gave them back. He likes to be covered in the hot months as well with a couple of cotton blankets or doesn't sleep well.

So I'd try adding a blanket or cover of some sort over your son's normal bedding to see if it helps, then another if it doesn't.

I don't know, but I know that I like to have more than just a sheet on me when I sleep. Especially my feet. I put the sham pillow on the foot of the bed just to create weight where my feet go.

When I was a kid, living in the deep south where it is very hot and humid, by Dad waited until July 4th to turn on the a/c. (Yeah.. it was a different time then). I had the hardest time falling asleep--yes, because it was hot, but because I couldn't bear to have anything more than a sheet on me, and I liked the weight of a blanket too.

Not me personally, but a friend had some success with them.

I like a heavy blanket and your question made me realize that I should try that with my daughter to see if she falls asleep easier. Thanks!

sounds safer to me than meds. I don't think they are so heavy that you can't push it off if you want right?

Okay, all I know is... I personally like to sleep with a pillow on me. Just a regular bed pillow. Its the weight of it.
My son, who is 6, does too. But his pillow is more toddler sized.
Now, I know, he's a kid/what about suffocating, etc. But he likes to use it on his torso area or under his knees when he is sleeping on his side etc. And he is old enough.
But, my son never had sleep issues. He was always a good sleeper, since he was a baby.
